Last October is when my problem started. When I pull in my clutch lever, I get a shuddering in the clutch lever and a growling noise in the engine. A couple of years ago, I sheared some rivets on the dampner plate. Replaced the dampner plate and all of the clutch plates and discs at that time. Had about 140,000 miles on it then. Now, have the shuddering in the clutch lever and the growling noise. Have 189,000 on it now. Everybody I talked to said it was the throw out bearing. So, I replaced the slave cylinder and the throw out bearing (the bearing in the lifter plate). To my surprised disappointment (I am not a mechanic), I had the same problem as before. To make a long story short, I've checked with two Honda mechanics, both very experienced, Stu Oltman on GWRRA magazine, Indybob on this site (thanks Bob) and apparently the only solution is to take the motor out and fix the problem (probably a bearing in the shaft??). The two Honda dealers said $3,000-$3,500. The old green bike is worth $1,500, and I'm not going to spend thousands to fix it. So, my solution was to learn to shift without using the clutch. I've had a motorcycle since 1967 and have never tried once to shift without using the clutch. Took me a month or two, but I have found that sweet spot to upshift and downshift without using the clutch. I make less noise shifting the green bike than I do on my 22,000 mile Valk tourer using the clutch. Not a solution, but this is what I'm doing now. I obviously have to use the clutch at a red light or from a stop, but I've eliminated using the clutch 95% (or more) of the time. My phone number is 314 541 1453 if you want more detailed info. Gary
