I'm having intermittent problems starting the bike.

It works for a few days then starts acting up again.

When I push the starter button the head lights go out ( as they should) but nothing happens.

I thought it could be the starter relay and I replaced it.

Battery terminals are clean and tight.

I haven't attempted to take the starter button apart yet. It isn't as accessible on the Interstate.

I have sprayed the starter button  with contact cleaner.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Disassemble and clean the starter button.  Some say to use dielectric grease upon reassembly.  Not an absolute, but those buttons are notorious for gumming up and doing exactly what you describe.

I just dealt with the same issue. Tried many things including the start button rebuild, starter relay, new battery, etc. I began to think it was the neutral safety switch, but found that it was the relay for the bank angle sensor. Electrical issues drive me crazy.

I got the starter button apart, cleaned the the contacts with green scrub pad and applied some dielectric grease.

It seems to be working now. Fingers crossed.....lol

I'll keep that in mind if this doesn't do the trick.

My issue were very similar. As yer sittin on the bike in the fairing behind the speaker on the right is a red plug-9 pin connector-that has small wires in it and male and female connectors within that plug. My Brother-da prez-with a LOT of help from members here-determined we had some loose connectors in that red 9 pin plug. 2 cell phones and calls across our country and 2 Valkyrie manuals and as I stated-lotsa help from other members here once da prez got that plug sorted out I haven't had anymore starting issues. IF my I/S wasn't over 100K when that happened it were dang close to 100K. And Before I fergit his Lovely Wife my S I L lit up his thinker when she told him to jump it a different way. You will need a wiring diagram for an I/S. Let us know please what ya find. RIDE SAFE.

Which one is the relay for the bank angle sensor?

The thing is, the Interstate has two relays for the headlights (via ignition), while the std and tourers do not.

Ergo, the very common starter button issue is very rare for any interstate.

So that's probably not your problem.

Are the relays you are referring too part # 17?
There are four of them at 40.35 ea Shocked

I got the starter switch out of the clamp assembly and functioned it numerous times.

It only worked a few times.

Gave it a shot of WD 40.......it didn't like that. Nothing...zip.

Then I took the starter switch apart and cleaned the contacts and applied a small amount of dielectric grease.

Its been working for several days now.  Smiley

I'm pretty sure now the problem was dirty contacts in the starter switch. I'm getting close to 180,000 miles on her.

I don't know Nova.

Hoping the starter switch was the issue after all.  cooldude

There is a test for the bank angle sensor relay in the service manual. It identifies which one by the color of the wires that are tested. All four of those relays are the same part number so it's a little difficult to figure which one you need to test from a parts diagram.

I haven't had any issues since I took apart the starter switch and cleaned it. Thanks for the info.
