...then never update their threads with results.   tickedoff  It seems to be a disservice not to help others that may run into the same problem at some point.

Just an observation...I’m probably guilty from some old threads, but will pledge to do better in the future.

I feel better now... Roll Eyes

It's usually people who have only a handful of posts who do this.

Even worse, IMO, are the first time posters who ask their question, then disappear for days.  Often helpful repliers ask for clarifications on their problem to be able to give them a better answer, then get silence form the OP.  I figure it just goes with the territory for some newbies.

I've mentioned it before here but nothing changes. Posting what actually"fixed" a certain problem may give someone with a simular issue a fix as well, or at least an idea where to start. Thus eliminating redundant posting. I think if members here take the time to post a possible solution to a problem it should be common courtesy for the OP to let everyone know what actually fixed a certain issue.

The part that bothers me is when people ask for advice, receive good suggestions and then completely ignore or even dis the information.

I am on 5 or 6 different motorcycle forums...... I like near anything that can go zoom on 2 wheels. The VFR forums are the most active, the general MC one's are kinda in the middle and by far this one is the most tame/quiet or least likely to reply to a post. Maybe because we are the smallest group or possibly because we are older baby boomers or dunno, least internet savvy.  Whatever the reason, it's just an observation about the forum......... I’m sure it’s pipe-dreaming, but an automated solution could help with this. If the original poster received an automated email about once a week reminding them of their post, and asking for an update. It’s not a fix-all solution, but many of us old farts kindof “move on” to the next thing once we’ve resolved the issue. I guess one could go through their posts and check once in awhile as well. Just a thought.

These people who don't post a follow up-post have been the bane of any forum on the Internet where there are forums on any subject and sub-topic, etc. Wonder if there's a forum on people who don't post follow-up posts.

I may be accused of that on occasion, often because when I ask I am still investigating and finding out new stuff "in real life"...out in the shed  Smiley .

I do not feel I dis advice or ideas, but I may provide a reason why they won't work for me. Also IME not _all_ suggestions are good. Roll Eyes

So what exactly does VFR stand for (so as to remove any lingering doubt about my lack of internet savvy)?

The Honda VFR was a sport/tourer model back in the early 2000's. But I'm not sure what the VFR stands for.

Jeez guys, you need to get out more.... j/k Wink The Honda VFR bike has been in constant production since about 1985 and been revised multple times. the VFR crew calls each revision Gen1/Gen 2 thru todays version - gen8.  I own a gen 5. The V4 engine gives the bike an addictive character and sound.
Here's my over maintained and over modified Gen5. - Several times a summer, someone will walk up to me when I get gas and say- "Is that new?" Of which the fun is the shocked amazement on their face when I tell them its 20 years old. (now)  Grin  (What it stand for? I guess Vee Four Rxxxx - dunno about the R.. The first models were considered full on sportbikes. I guess sorta like CBR.)

And just to confirm - yes I am a whackjob, here's a pic of the teardown job I did on it. (See a trend here?)

dunno about the R..

I always thought the "R" in Honda bikes meant Racing or Racer.

They used it in all the Off Road dirt bikes, starting with the "CR" 2 strokes in the 70's.

That's a good question.  We'd have to ask Soichiro Honda to get the answer, but I don't think he's available. Smiley Lot's of debate and speculation on that without, as usual, any clarification from Honda.

I always figured most of the designations they came up with were just random. XL, CR, SL, CB, etc. (the VFR designation does make sense though) Any thoughts on the GL designation ?

Any thoughts on the GL designation ?

GL = Gold Ling?   (with Japanese pronunciation)   Grin

(sorry, but I think all regional dialects are subject to equal humor)

The Japanese manuals are better than they used to be, but still, every so often you read a passage in one, and go.............. what?

Well I know the ST in ST1100 and ST 1300 stood for Sports Touring. Smiley

A search of the web (never know what you might find) says the GL does not have a meaning for the Honda Goldwing but says later on that for Fords it stands for Grand Luxury.  Might fit.

Mello-
I'm new on this forum, fairly new to Valkyries, but been riding & wrenching for ..... well, since the early '60's (mini-bike days! YEAH!)

Did the VFR start out as the Sabre?
I seem to recall that Honda came out with two bikes using the V4 engine.... one was the Sabre, and I liked it, although I was happy with my '77 Suzuki GS750. The other one was a.... Magna? a Cruiser-style bike, if I recall correctly. The cruiser did not appeal to me, as I was into running the twisty back roads in VA at the time.

Oh, and back to the original title of this thread....
Online forums.... I'm not too experienced at, but in real life....

.... I have a decent amount of automotive/mechanical/machinery knowledge. I used to find it a bit irritating when someone -who has NO CLUE what they are doing- would ask me a "this is what it's doing.... what is wrong?" type question, I would think about it, answer it as best I could, give my reasons for my answer...... then they want to ARGUE WITH ME about it!  Ugh!
I finally learned to just say something like "well, it sounds like you've got it figured out" and walk away.

On the other hand, I did mechanical design work for 30+ years.
Sometimes I would just get 'stuck' on some mechanical design puzzle.
I would think about the design from 'sixteen different directions' so to speak, and if I still could not come up with a solution I was happy with, I would sit down and discuss it with someone else where I worked. It did not take me long to figure out that I had to be careful who I discussed with. Some people would not listen to what I was saying after about the first sentence or two, but would blurt out "You Need To..... blah-blah-blah"... almost always a 'solution' that I had already thought of, thought through, and realized that it had fatal flaws. I would then try to explain that I had already thought of what they were suggesting, and why that 'solution' would not solve the puzzle. These  people would not listen, would not discuss, but would then go around telling all their buddies that "Yeah, old so-and-so was stuck and asked me for a solution, and I told him how to fix it, but he would not listen to anything that he did not come up with himself."
So.... cursed if you do, and cursed if you don't!

I found that the best person to talk to in my outfit happened to be a computer programmer who was completely non-mechanical. But..... he would listen, he was smart, he was logical, he would THINK....and we could DISCUSS various schemes...... quite often, just laying out the situation, giving all the background information, would lead to the solution presenting itself.

V Four Racing.  Honda was somewhat generous with the racing designation.   Wink
