Hey all, was asked on another discussion thread what the proper way to remove the plastic side covers was. Never truer than with side cover tabs! ... I've seen people yank them off
like they were made out of steel. If it has been a few months since I had
them off (and it usually is) I look in my owner's manual (still under my seat)
and review the removal procedure... they pop right off pretty safely
if you do it like in the manual...
Anyone have and suggestions on repairs?
People do it several ways...
If you have the broken off tab and wish you could just glue
it back on, the side covers are ABS and ABS plumbing glue
can work.
Some people replace the broken tab with some velcro.
I've heard of drilling a little hole and using a zip tie, but ...

Some good repairs here, I used the paper clip & ABS glue method on a buddy,s Valk, been good for 8 years. Pics are gone though thanks to Photobucket. |

I used a paper clip and JB Weld. The repair has held for many years now.

Some good repairs here, I used the paper clip & ABS glue method on a buddy,s Valk, been good for 8 years. Pics are gone though thanks to Photobucket. Could use the right size electrical staple, for household wiring. |

Billyjack , I do a lot of repairs to Valks. A new method I use partially comes from this board. The current bike has the side cover and center cover tabs broken. I used blue painters tape on the outside of the cover to locate the tab. I ground off the remainder of the tab and roughed the surface for repair. I cut a piece of donor abs 3/4 x1 1/2 inch. I removed all surface finishes and then used MEK solvent to wet the back side of the cover and donor part. I clamped it in place with 3/4 inch sticking past the cover. Once cured , I used abs black plastic glue as added strength. Now , two choices. The tab hole can be cut and finished or (missing center cover tab) an oval grommet(side cover lower) can be installed in the center cover with a little trimming. The MEK makes a world of difference when using black abs glue. Holes can be filled by taping over after prep .Fill from the inside. I even use abs to fill seams that get painted. Do not rush the curing.

Sounds like it would be very helpful in helping the side covers blow off on the freeway. Those things need to be a bit tight. If you need a lube use a dab of spit, it will dry and not leave it slippery |
