Fork tube shredding apart????

Hello all I ve been trying to find an answer on the forum about my fork tubes shredding apart by the triple tree clamps. It looks like the chrome or whatever color is exposed the fiberglass looking material beneath it??? Are they made of metal or fiberglass? Is this something structural? I’m trying to post a pic but am having some difficulties

Other folks have mentioned it before. If it is the same thing, mine were doing it on one side when
I got it from Philadelphia. I spun the bad place around to where you can't see it, it hasn't
continued. I guess it is some kind of reaction, salt maybe? The forks metal, aluminum
probably... post a picture?

Another posted of what seems the same thing. I recall from FL, and the forks are metal, so this would be some kind of galvanic action.

I suspect it’s just the clearcoat coming off. I wet sanded a set of my forks and had to get through the clear coat first

It’s definitely  corrosion the last owner let the bike sit outside  for years. Now it’s garaged but I can hit the river with a rock from where I live so probably not much better for it. Is it anything I should be concerned with? And I’m will try to get pics up today

Mine's been sitting in here for twelve years, no problem... stuff like living outside in the weather, irregular
washing off of crud and road-crew-salt are the killers I think.



Is it anything I should be concerned with?

If the surface kept on flaking off forever you'd be toast, but if it stops now that you have it
out of the weather and stuff, it would be just a "looks" thing... people polish these forks until
they gleam, you could probably polish off the ick. Perhaps if you look under the triple clamps
there's no ick where they are not exposed.

This problem has been brought up here by Radio, and here by Jims99.  Radio doesn't say where he is, but Jims99 is in Ormond Beach, FL.  This seems to be a problem where the bike is continually exposed to salty sea air.  I'm glad it's not an issue here on the dry prairies, where the only fork finish issue is the clearcoat on the aluminum parts getting cloudy from (I assume) the sun.  I ride to work whenever the weather and road conditions allow, so Gryphon is often parked outside during the day.

That is exactly what mine looks like  I was debating on buying a set of used forks on eBay but I think I will leave it alone. I ride my bike every day to and from work 60 miles a day in salty Florida air and clean it weekly so I will wait to they bug me more hahah thank you for posting that picture

I think so too  ... that's where I dried them off after a rain ride... I don't usually have Carolyn's
arm rests to exploit...
