Cleaning out the garage today and I discovered a case of the Mobil 1 4T 10w-40 oil that I forgot about and I think was purchased in summer 2012. --- Just wondering what the peanut gallery thinks on whether to use it or not. - Interested in does the oil have a shelf life? - And for fun added a poll.

Agree with ^^^him. No shelf life on clean, sealed oil.

I worked (now retired) for a large global company that made High Speed Separators. We disposed of all oil including synthetic when it reached three years old.

When I was cleaning out some shelves the other day I looked down into a third of a bottle of oil that has been opened for years... ida know how long... it looked great. I think our Valkyries would run for 300,000 miles on this oil: On the internet they say "five years"... Gideon's centrifuges probably cost a million dollars each, they probably don't screw around with old oil on stuff like that -Mike

Was that an engineer decision, or a lawyer decision?

Well, with oil that old, it is important to use it correctly. You have to apply the beer first. The exact quantity depends on the person, but lets just say more is better. Once it has had time to soak in, then the oil can be added to the crankcase. If you follow this recipe to the letter, it should work fine. One caveat: if it was older, say 10 years old, then a single malt has to be used instead of beer.

Correct answer! Oh, then 1 quart of beer, then 1 quart of oil, followed by another quart of beer...

How in the hell did you lose a case of precious expensive Mobil 1 4T would be my 1st. thought and then go find some "mind restore" supplement. And I'll take some @ $1 a quart too!

as said, fresh clean oil sealed in bottle lasts decades no problems using it. I have had quarts of oil for my cars (conventional dyno oil) sealed in basement for over 3-4 years still using it. I buy on sale for my 4 vehicles and should probably rotate it or label the buy date on the box to keep using the older stuff up first.
