Thoroughly enjoy the coverage of this event; a test of the people and the machines that they are on or in.
Mixed emotions about where it's being held, but I'll just concentrate on the abilities of these folks and the effort they are putting into the daily competition against the courses.

Being held by a “dry” country they’ll need to go another place to celebrate.

I'm looking forward again to this annual event.  I've been following it for years, it never fails to entertain.

Wonder why they moved it from South America?  Seems to me Saudi Arabia will be mostly sand dunes and beaches.  S/A had many different types of topography to choose from.

But we'll see, I'm sure it will as spectacular as usual.

Thanks for posting it Rob. cooldude

P.S. I just checked, the coverage is planned to be on NBCSN again.  Probably in the middle of the night like the last few years.

Bill, I read somewhere that Saudi Arabia won a 5 year bid on the rights to it. Hopefully it won’t be all sand. I liked the varied terrain of South America. (Thanks for reintroducing it to me a couple years back)

Is that right? I hadn't heard that.  It should be a fast run.

I'm amazed at the lack of interest from the US on this totally grueling race.

I really wish one of the North American truck companies would get involved in the truck class.

Interest would soar if PeterBilt, Mack or Kenworth joined.  Oshkosh would fit right in.

Ford seems to be the only other company outside of the Europe, Russian and Japanese companies and they only did one year.

It is curious why it draws little attention here. Maybe we Americans are too provincial ? If a race or sporting event isn’t held here we seem to lack interest in it. It’s a shame though. It’s a great event.

I find Indy and NASCAR and a lot of racing boring. But this event, with such difficult terrain and different vehicles, is very interesting. They often have such great camera work and story telling to go along with it.

Thanks for the reminder.

A bit more info about 2020's rally; appears that it will be live streamed through Red Bull's website.

Grueling, but a sweet victory if one can finish...maybe broken but alive.  That is what I took away from Mr. Meathead's video history up top.

Definitely sand in your shorts...and your hair...and your ears...and your boots...etc., etc. Cheesy

You are welcome.  I'm jazzed to see if the visual coverage matches what NBCSN did with on board, drone, and helicopter shots that put you right in the saddles or cockpits of these cowboys (girls). Cool

Is he a rider or support?  If a rider, sure would appreciate a name and bib number.  Husqvarna has a major stake in this up against KTM.  Good luck to them. Smiley

He was a rider, then mechanic, then crew chief, now head of race teams.  A good progression. He left KTM for Husqvarna.

video from awhile back when he was crew chief for moto/ superx

Another little side-note. I think it was the first race in which I visited/watched him and asked him about engine speed. He said everyday factory production bikes are set for 15K, he sets their bikes at 16K. So I about %#$@@& and asked for how long. His answer was till it ran out of gas and started the one we were standing next to and and immediately went WOT and held it. This bike was set to be in the next heat too. A 450 4 stroke single running at 16K is quite the thing !

There is alcohol in Saudi Arabia if you know where to look.

I bought some hooch off of a Korean truck driver there.

Mixed it into a 32oz cup with some cola and was drunk for 2 days.

The first six stages are done and today is a day of rest (believe me, they are grateful).  Incredible coverage by NBCSN with footage and interviews.  A few great stories about the camaraderie among the participants; the willingness to help out a fellow competitor with parts, labor, and assistance when there is a crash, breakdown, or failure.  A couple of hellacious wrecks that required medical attention and transport.

Catch the highlights if you can.  Cool

Brabec on a Honda leads the motorcycle class.

I’m not a fan of the new announcer on NBCSN. But other than, it’s been great. ( I hope you didn’t jinx Brabeck  Smiley )

I've watched all 6 shows by NBCSN.  They do a good job considering the size and space to cover.

I agree with you Rob, not as happy with this announcer, but who I really have a hard time listening to is Nasser Al-Attiyah.  Great racer, but his voice tone gets me. Smiley

I wish they'd spend a little more time on the trucks and the vehicle tech.

What amazing landscape.

What the heck do all those camels eat to survive?

Honda is showing well and I'm hoping they can pull it off. cooldude

I've got to agree with you on Al-Attiyah. Very grating. I have no idea how those camels survive. I ain't seen enough forage for a couple mice, much less herds of camels. (They probably don't call them herds)

"Arabian camels aren't known for their kissable lips. Their large, leathery mouths can handle the prickly thorns of almost any kind of desert vegetation, including that which other animals steer clear of.

Of course, even so, deserts can be, well, like deserts. Yet just as a camel can survive for weeks without water, it can go weeks without food.

The animals make sure they get the most from their infrequent meals by digesting their food several times in their stomach's three chambers. They also help quench their thirst by absorbing moisture from the plants they eat."

They are amazing creatures, these Ships of the Desert.  Evolution and natural selection in it's finest example. smitten

Just hope that the racers give them a wide berth.

There ya go, boys.

Accomplished and veteran rider Carlos Goncalves of Portugal.  Tonight's TV episode should be reserved and somber.
Motorcycles and Quad runners are cancelled for today's stage.  It is dangerous business out there, even for the pros.angel

Those guys make it look easy.  Although it seemed to be more flat out racing than technically challenging like South America, it was still a great race.

Congratulations to Brabec, Honda,  Husqvarna for taking second and American CaseyCurrie for winning the side x side.

Great showing for USA winning 2 competitions. Always only bridesmaids.

Now if they could get a US truck manufacturer involved, it would send the viewing ratings ski high.
