Right or wrong each individual governor is trying to save face, especially the ones with a D behind their name.

They'll eventually fall in line with what the Federal Government wants.

Yep.   A three stage plan.   I'd be all for the President being being granted the power to force governors to follow the plan.   When you meet the numbers, you must move on to the next stage of reopening.

The real power of the Federal Government is $$$$$.

And it will always find a way to get what it wants.

I learned that as a teenager when the Federal Government forced all states to raise the legal drinking age to 21.

WV was one of the last hold outs.

They resisted raising the legal drinking age from 18 to 21 until the Feds threatened to cut off ALL Federal Highway funds.

That wouldn't work now.  The Ninth Circuit Court would block it (depending on who the president was at the time).

My (all time) favorite picture if him is in his brand new North Korean Navy Man o' War.

Although I could be wrong, the harpoon up front may mean it's an anti-submarine (ASW) vessel.

She is visiting this week from Hutchinson, one of our "nieces" is having cancer / polyp removal surgery tomorrow at KU Med center . Dena is doing better up here and away from her mom (she likes saying she has a 55 year old kid for a mother). Dena is not a bad baker either. Home baked bread and an apple pie went fine with leftover home lasagna and salad from last night (lasagna was the wife's and mine).

If you're a praying type - please pray for Dena.
Thank you.

Good news - Dena's surgery went better than expected - they took out less than they were expecting to. Still need results from lab if cancerous or not (should be Tuesday), and she should be released Wednesday. Unfortunately - NO VISITORS at the hospital due to C-19.

CDC revised COVID death numbers last night.

They moved nearly half the deaths from the COVID column to the COVID or Flu or Pneumonia column.

As of May 1st CDC data
https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid19/index.htm

Why is anyone in lockdown or masks even being required?

Just goes to show that most people, even some health care providers don't understand how face masks work.

I got out for a bit yesterday and saw several people going down the Interstate wearing a mask with their windows rolled up.

My immediate thought is, "What on Earth do they think they're protecting themselves from?"

Even though it is at best a false sense of protection, I can understand wearing the mask at stops.

But, if it did get contaminated with cooties at the last rest stop, continuing to wear it only increases the chance of those cooties getting through the mask and into the wearers respiratory tract.

Personally, I would remove it and place it somewhere that it would be in direct sunlight until the next stop.

From an rticle by Marc Hansen

Marc Hansen is a professor of physiology and developmental biology at Brigham Young University. He holds a doctorate from Stanford University in cancer biology. His views are his own.

"Unfortunately, an instinctive “run and hide” response makes social distancing and economic lockdowns comforting, and transitions away from this policy are met with significant resistance. Nonetheless, the data clearly indicate that a major transition in managing the coronavirus is warranted. That transition means an end to broad economic lockdown and social distancing. Except for those at high risk, a return to full normalcy is urgent."

"Unfortunately, an instinctive “run and hide” response makes social distancing and economic lockdowns comforting".

He wants an urgent return to "full normalcy".  Like packed stadiums, right away.  What could possibly go wrong with that?  Heck, I'd like a return to "full normalcy" too.  I don't agree that's a great way to get there.  Remember, I was all for Trump's Three Stage Plan of directives.

Economic lockdowns sure aren't comforting.  I guess social distancing doesn't fall into the "comforting" category for me either, but I do it sometimes.  If it brings some comfort to others who do, I am not going to criticize or hold that against them.  If it makes the professor feel better to do so, that's fine with me!

That said I'm not convinced we should all seek out the largest pools of humanity we can find and enthusiastically swan dive back in, social distancing be cursed.

The weather is here, the water is good enough to dip my toes...

Maybe another ride this afternoon...   Wink I ain't s askerd a no gas pump.  I carry Purell.

To each their own.  I'm not gonna get angry at folks wearing masks, or keeping their distance when around me.  If a stranger walks up to me in store and gets in my tight personal space or touches me, I may not be appreciative.

And yes, riding by the lake yesterday I saw a young lady diving windows up and sporting a mask.  It didn't strike me as funny, but it didn't seem quite logical, either.  I like to wear a n95 in the store for the time being.   I also blast my hands with Purell after removing it outside my vehicle or before touching my bike or riding gloves (or face). Call me crazy.   crazy2

Everyone enjoy your rides!

There is a lot of misinformation out there. A lot of it evidently propagated thru Facebook. A lot of people have been told not to touch their masks or remove them. The people you see driving in their cars with them on are probably just doing what they've been told by some "experts".

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” ― Edmund Burke

The quote above is commonly attributed to Edmund Burke and used by President John F. Kennedy in 1961.

As we sit here, our liberties taken away, our freedoms removed, reflect on the words.

Businesses shuttered because of the type of service they provide, movement from state to state restricted, all for the "good of the people".

Remember also the words of Benjamin Franklin;

“A republic . . . if you can keep it.”

A government with limited and specific powers.  And with freedoms guaranteed to the people as "inalienable rights".  Not granted by government but rights that government cannot infringe upon.

Then look again at today.

And hope for tomorrow because that is all we can do, hope we get those rights re-establihsed.

I'll just leave this here.

Wearing a mask with your nose sticking out is like wearing a condom with the tip cut off.

Oh, so thats how it goes ?     Grin 2funny

This from RonBou on the NE board

A guy is going on a tour of a factory that produces various latex products.

At the first stop, he is shown the machine that manufactures baby-bottle nipples. The machine makes a loud ‘hiss-pop’ noise.

“The hiss is the rubber being injected into the mold,” explains the guide. “The popping sound is the needle poking a hole in the end of the nipple.”

Later, the tour reaches the part of the factory where condoms are manufactured. The machine makes a ‘Hiss. Hiss. Hiss. Hiss-pop’ noise.

“Wait a minute!” says the man taking the tour. “I understand what the ‘hiss, hiss,’ is, but what’s that ‘pop’ every so often?”

“Oh, it’s just the same as in the baby-bottle nipple machine,” says the guide. “It pokes a hole in every fourth condom.”

“Well, that can’t be good for the condoms!”

“Yeah, but it’s great for the baby-bottle nipple business!"

as I've written before pump up those numbers.

“To be honest with you, all of the death certificates, they're writing COVID on all the death certificate, whether they had a positive test, whether they didn't," Michael Lanza, the funeral director at Colonial Funeral Home in Staten Island, told Project Veritas. "So, I think, you know, again, this is my personal opinion, I think that like the mayor in our city, they're looking for federal funding and, the more they put COVID on the death certificate, the more they can ask for federal funds. So I think it's political."

According to Josephine Dimiceli, the President of Dimiceli & Sons Funeral Home, she had a client who is a New York State Supreme Court Justice. She didn't believe her sister died of the Wuhan coronavirus. According to the justice, the sister had Alzheimer's and she died because the health care workers failed to "suction her because [she] forget how to swallow."

"Right away they put down COVID-19 on her death certificate," Dimiceli said. The justice had an independent autopsy performed and found no signs of the Wuhan coronavirus.

Just in case you were wondering if "tracking" exists, the website below shows activity for several countries , including the US.  But don't worry, Apple assures us that we are being tracked anonymously.   Inside the article there are links to "realtime" data.

"According to Apple's COVID-19 Mobility Trends report, traffic in the U.S. and other European countries has nearly doubled in the past three weeks, a sign that citizens are becoming restless and increasingly unwilling to abide by government stay-at-home orders.

Location data provided by Foursquare also shows that gas and fast food visits have increased to pre-COVID-19 levels in the Midwest and rural areas.

"Gas station traffic has returned to pre-COVID-19 levels in the Midwest, and in rural areas throughout the country. Foot traffic to quick service restaurants (QSRs) has risen over the past several weeks."
Grocery store visits have dropped to normal levels, indicating that people are shopping on a regular basis rather than stocking up for a lockdown."

So,,  I just checked these two CDC websites to see if there was an explanation for the difference between the two pieces of information (besides a week difference in time).  Not only is the information confusing as to how it is labeled, as you dig into the information you find that the first website is labeled "Provisional" and the second is just labeled as "Cases in the US" (well there are more words).

Provisional Death Counts for Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19):  As reported in May 1 based on data as of April 25  -  37,308

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid19/index.htm

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Cases in the U.S.  TOTAL DEATHS  65,735 as of May 3

So, why is there almost a 30,000 difference in deaths attributed to COVID-19 between the two CDC websites and why is the 65,735 number the commonly used number?

if you want to see the actual pages an more information you can scroll down but here is a summary of how the 65,735 number has been determined (as of May 3).  This information is from a link in the CDC website to the criteria as defined by Council for State and Territorial Epidemiologists which is being used as the "standard" for the identification of a COVID-19 death.

You have some symptoms and there is no other likely diagnosis

Laboratory Testing including detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in a clinical specimen

Epidemiologic Linkage Close contact with someone or travel to a location with a SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis or Member of a risk cohort as defined by public health authorities during an outbreak

A death certificate that  lists COVID-19 disease or SARS-CoV-2 as a cause of death or a significant condition contributing to death

So, the information that is used to determine if a death is COVID-19 related is based on a definition issued by the "Council for State and Territorial Epidemiologists"

There is a link in the CDC data to that document.  However, when you click on the link you get popup windows that says is that you are leaving the CDC website and the CDC cannot attest to the accuracy of a non-federal website.

So here is that link

Alright,  I'm convinced.   Those cursed crooked epidemiologists!  It's obvious this piddly little popcorn fart of a virus is a total hoax.  Carry on.   Nothing to see here.   Same as it ever was.

Just writing that was very therapeutic.   It's almost as if this global pandemic is behind us, and never even occurred!   I can see the reasoning in that thinking.  As Alfred said,  "What, me worry?  coolsmiley

Life is terminal.  The sooner we learn to not deny this fact the sooner we will be able to get on with real living.

What we have experienced is fear (panic) fanned by a self serving media and a demand that the government take measures to change the inevitable.  True virus protection measures include washing one's hands and avoiding touching one's mouth, nose and eyes.  The measures we've taken are intended to slow down the spread of the virus.  Slow down is not the same as stop.  Barring the miraculous rapid development of a vaccine the people who will contract the virus will contract the virus sooner or later.  The only way to completely stop the spread of viruses is to go to complete universal isolation.  I don't think we can do this.

As a young man I read a science fiction book in which a story was included of two people working to parent a baby.  In the fictional society people stayed entirely in their residences with all interchange being remote electronically.  The couple attempting to sire were separated by plastic with only the necessary genitals exposed.  I guess they hadn't thought of artificial insemination.  I don't choose to live that way.

Live life.  Accept the reasonable risks.  Take the precautions that you are willing to take accepting the restrictions that you are willing to endure.

Government house arrest of healthy subjects is not acceptable and it saves no one's life.

I realize that you have stated several times that you are NOT freaked out by this Virus and that you think things should begin a return to normal.

And I really want to believe you.

But, Posts like this make it very hard for me to do so.
