Why do you need a vaccine against something less worse than the flu?

First of all it is MSN.  Second, ifs information from China.  Two strikes.

Third, the rulers in China have seen what they could do with the virus. They managed to shutdown the worlds largest economy, forced them to spend $3 Trillion dollars they don't have.

Basically the US is not the US today.  And, if you read other posts (for instance from Jersey Mike), there are several states that will never return to normal.  Never, ever, unless the citizens take some action.

Just for the record, today's CDC numbers from Website One.

February 1, 2020 - May 16, 2020

Deaths from all cases  -  876,866

CORVID19                  -  62,515
Pneumonia                 -  83,333
Influenza                   -   6,180

This drug has been around for decades.

By medical standards it is a very safe drug.

The ONLY reason that I can come up with for the opposition is that Big Pharma doesn't want it to work.

If you do a search you will find several studies about using Hydroxychloroquine as prophylaxis.  Since it is possible, and the drug is used for travelers to areas where malaria is present and Trump sees lots of people, its just one more piece of armor.

An April study from India.  No fact checks my me.

Back when we were crossing the equator headed to Mombasa, we were all put on a regimen of malaria drugs. I imagine they were probably these. As I remember though some guys did get diarrhea from them.

https://www.fa-mag.com/news/covid-patients-testing-positive-after-recovery-aren-t-infectious--study-shows-55825.html

From  link:

"The findings, reported late Monday, are a positive sign for regions looking to open up as more patients recover from the pandemic that has sickened at least 4.8 million people. The emerging evidence from South Korea suggests those who have recovered from Covid-19 present no risk of spreading the coronavirus when physical distancing measures are relaxed.

The results mean health authorities in South Korea will no longer consider people infectious after recovering from the illness. Research last month showed that so-called PCR tests for the coronavirus’s nucleic acid can’t distinguish between dead and viable virus particles, potentially giving the wrong impression that someone who tests positive for the virus remains infectious.

The research may also aid in the debate over antibody tests, which look for markers in the blood that indicate exposure to the novel coronavirus. Experts believe antibodies probably convey some level of protection against the virus, but they don’t have any solid proof yet. Nor do they know how long any immunity may last".

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I'm still one of those who'd rather not experiment with C-19 by getting it.  I am getting out and about so I very well might get it anyway.  Herd immunity is fantastic unless you get eliminated from the herd.  I'd also rather not have to visit a hospital to achieve the status of "recovered".  I realize the chances of either are slim, but I like to narrow them.  So I carry Purell in my truck and saddlebags.  No harm, no foul.

If you accept the notion of 50 days on and 30 days off as a way of life, then the United States of America as a free society is GONE!.

How long will you accept 50 days on and 30 days off?  How long will you hide in your home?  How long will you avoid others?

In fact all free societies will be gone.  And its all for your safety.

I’m afraid things are taking a turn for the worse there.

Who accepts it?  Not me.   I don't "accept" anything about C19.  Except that it has caused UNNECESSARY worldwide illness and death and global economic devastation.

We should again take this opportunity to thank China from the bottom of our hearts.   smitten

From the linked article:

Quote
State epidemiologist Anders Tegnell, the spokesman for Sweden's outlier coronavirus strategy, dismissed the figures on Tuesday night, arguing that it was misleading to focus on the death toll over a single week.

It makes sense that it would go high sometime as the point of shutdown was to slow the rate.  It's the total impact that will tell whether Sweden was better or worse off with their approach.

Regarding Sweden.  As Willow said, the real information is linked in the article.

From a link in the referenced article.

As of May 18th

Deaths Per Million

Sweden 366
Spain   591
France  431

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2020/05/18/not-romanticise-swedens-ill-prepared-adrift-coronavirus-response/

If you would like daily updated information from a second source, this is available.

https://coronavirus.thebaselab.com

Spain and France are still ahead of Sweden.

Their charts can be sorted as you wish (not all columns, but some).

This corroborates what the article Meathead posted said.  Except for last week's deaths per million through today.  The article specifies they are looking at data from the past week.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/sweden-becomes-country-highest-coronavirus-133234368.html

Quote :

"According to figures collated by the Our World in Data website, Sweden had 6.08 deaths per million inhabitants per day on a rolling seven-day average between May 13 and May 20".

Note the per day.

"This is the highest in the world, above the UK, Belgium and the US, which have 5.57, 4.28 and 4.11 respectively.

However, Sweden has only had the highest death rate over the past week, with Belgium, Spain, Italy, the UK and France, still ahead over the entire course of the pandemic".

Data over the past week compared to data over the course of the pandemic.  May 13 thru May 20 (today).  A significant distinction.

Yes, the data posted was over a specific time frame.

Using it as an indication of the result of taking a specific action is, over a longer time frame, is not scientific.

We do not know what, if anything, might have contributed to the "weekly" change.  It was a snapshot in time.

However, the intent of the article was to show that the actions Sweden took to virus were "incorrect".

The data was right, the intent was to paint the actions taken by Sweden to be bad.  It is the intent that we should be every vigilant to.

INTENT!!!

Again, we agree.   Since "we" don't know,  "we" can keep collecting and analyzing data and watch for tends.

Overall numbers, wekly changes, differences between countries, age groups, pre existing conditions, etc., etc., etc..

The more we learn, the more we know.

https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2020/05/20/national/noisy-neighbors-tokyo-coronavirus/

It was 4 years in university dormitories that nearly drove me crazy.  Youth, alcohol, dope, discovery of sex, Led Zepplin (and his buddies), flag football in the hallways, streaking, and one particular guy with his drum set.

I was the resident adviser (RA) for 3 of those years, and after I enlisted the assistance of a couple tackles for the football team (one of whom later started for the Green Bay Packers), things got a little better, most of the time.  I needed the free room and board that came with the job (but being on duty 24 hours a day worked out to be about 35 cents an hour).

The drum set went away after his immediate neighbors pennyed him in his room (locked from the outside) and poured a quart of skunk oil under his door (on the 5th floor).  (but this resulted in the necessary evacuation of the half the wing of that floor for several days).

Do Lockdowns Save Many Lives? In Most Places, the Data Say No
The speed with which officials shuttered the economy appears not to be a factor in Covid deaths.

One way we might discern whether and to what extent lockdowns have had any effect on infection and death is to examine the empirical case.

Writing in the Wall Street Journal, T.J Rogers examined all the existing studies:

Do quick shutdowns work to fight the spread of Covid-19? Joe Malchow, Yinon Weiss and I wanted to find out. We set out to quantify how many deaths were caused by delayed shutdown orders on a state-by-state basis.

normalized for an unambiguous comparison of deaths between states at the midpoint of an epidemic, we counted deaths per million population for a fixed 21-day period, measured from when the death rate first hit 1 per million—e.g.,‒three deaths in Iowa or 19 in New York state. A state’s “days to shutdown” was the time after a state crossed the 1 per million threshold until it ordered businesses shut down.

We ran a simple one-variable correlation of deaths per million and days to shutdown, which ranged from minus-10 days (some states shut down before any sign of Covid-19) to 35 days for South Dakota, one of seven states with limited or no shutdown. The correlation coefficient was 5.5%—so low that the engineers I used to employ would have summarized it as “no correlation” and moved on to find the real cause of the problem. (The trendline sloped downward—states that delayed more tended to have lower death rates—but that’s also a meaningless result due to the low correlation coefficient.)

No conclusions can be drawn about the states that sheltered quickly, because their death rates ran the full gamut, from 20 per million in Oregon to 360 in New York. This wide variation means that other variables—like population density or subway use—were more important. Our correlation coefficient for per-capita death rates vs. the population density was 44%. That suggests New York City might have benefited from its shutdown—but blindly copying New York’s policies in places with low Covid-19 death rates, such as my native Wisconsin, doesn’t make sense.

US city lockdowns 'could have saved almost 40,000 lives', new research claims

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/world/us-coronavirus-lockdown-save-lives-columbia-university-research-a4447016.html

Don't shoot the messenger.  I didn't write the article and I hate mandated lockdown as much as I hate COVID.  The study indicates that earlier lockdowns in large US cities may have saved many lives.

"The study indicates that earlier lockdowns in large US cities may have saved many lives."

Key words, "earlier lockdown in large US cities may have saved many lives.

This meets the logic associated with a disease that appears to be transmitted by person to person contact.  However, the word "may" is used.  But its logical

But what we had, saw, still have, is a one sized fits all operation.  And we have people doing strange things when people in "low risk population" areas that want to get back to normal.

So, in hindsight, large population centers, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Washington, DC, Boston,,,,,  just to name a few more, should have been shut down, other places not.

However, had that been done, in that way, can you imagine what the Main Stream Media would have done with that.  They would have suggested it was political.

So, the old cursed if you do and cursed it you don't mantra is available for use.  As well as hindsight is 20/20.

The "Shut down everything" side is starting to get violent.....

"I Bet you stay home now you hypokrits."

The First Pentecostal Church of Holly Springs in Mississippi burned down early Wednesday morning. The congregation had been in a legal battle to continue holding services despite the novel coronavirus outbreak and subsequent lockdown orders.

Here is the real reason for the lockdown

Biden: Coronavirus Is An Opportunity “To Rewrite The Social Contract” To Push Liberal Agenda

https://youtu.be/sA_Sk5mOmiI

Remake the world as it should be

Rewrite the social contracts

Make a democracy that represents more people
 tickedoff

I thought we had a good republic that represented people, seems we have to change that all at the point of a gun, the Covid gun. Not by elections, or being decent, or giving people better choices, but squeeze them.

If they will do this now, why when they have power and control would they do the right thing? This is disgusting, an abuse of power through manipulation and fear.

I try to not be much of a tinfoil hat type, but a timeline:

1. Pro-freedom/democracy protests are breaking out in Hong Kong, getting very serious and growing by the day.

2. Wuhan Flu breaks out and spread around the world, making people afraid to have mass gatherings.

3. While the world is distracted with that and has mostly forgotten about the Hong Kong anti-socialist protests: "China to impose sweeping national security law in Hong Kong, bypassing city’s legislature"

The story in China is not so much different than here in the U.S.A.  Whether the perpetrators intentionally started the plague or simply took advantage of the situation is not that important.  It is quite clear that it is being used to do things, make changes, that would not otherwise had been possible.
