I was looking at the Don Jones 10 year chart at the link below.

Did you know that the Dow Jones gained almost 10,000 points from January 2017 until January 2020 (three years).

While from January 2015 until January 2017 (four years) the Dow only gained 7,000 points (numbers rounded).

The funny thing is that the graph shown is basically a straight line, implying a constant positive increase at the same rate.  However, if one looks at the "X" and "Y" axis units the "X" axis is linear, but the "Y" axis is non-linear.

Wonder what it would have looked like if both axis were linear?

Numbers are funny things and can be twisted around. Not saying your post does that.

Obama inherited a 7,500 ish number. In 4 years the Dow rose to 13,600 ish.

By the end of his second term the Dow was at about 16,000 ish (I think).

Numbers and percentages are funny things and can be used in a variety of ways.

January  2009  Dow 8,007
December 2011  Dow 12,217
Increase of 4,210 or 52.6%

January 2017  Dow 19,762
December 2019  Dow 28,515
Increase of 8,753 or 44.2%

As a corollary, in the use of percentages, I ask the following question.

You have $10,000.  I offer you a return of 50% at the end of three years.  $10,000 x 1.5. So, at the end of three years you have a net gain of $5,000.  Its all yours.  All you have to do is cash out.

Another bank hears about the first deal and says that if you will give them $20,000 then will offer you a return of 40% at the end of three years.  $20,000 x 1.4.  So, at the end of three years you have a net gain of $8,000.  Its all yours.  All you have to do is cash out.

Compounding this analysis is the change in the value of the dollar you invested.  Normally most people would not look at that, but it can be found.  And while the value is important, its what it will buy that is important.  (See last line for the value of a dollar between 2000 and 2019)

Another analogy is wages.  You work at a place of business.  It is time for the annual changes to salaries.  The owner says that he will offer those employees making $8 an hour a 5% raise and those that are making $16 an hour a 4% raise.  The fact that the higher wage earners get a smaller raise is enticing.  But, as we all know, the $8 an hour worker will get a $0.40 an hour raise.  The $16 hour worker will get a $0.64 an hour raise.  A difference of $0.24 and hour or a difference of 60%

Now, the value of the dollar has been decreasing over the last 20 years.  Its almost a flat rate of change.  But….

2000 $1,000
2008 $1,250
2019 $1,484

So, if you had a dollar in 2008, it would be worth 0.84 in 2019.

And back to the corollary, the $0.64 wage increase was actually $0.54.

Some data from this website as to actual values

They didn't say, but it weighs 22,000 lbs.  And it did not go up on the banking.  They said it either has a big 490 V8 or Duramax 400 V8 turbo diesel.  Built on a truck chassis.  I don't think the windows roll down.

Also, the standard motorcade likely has enough firepower to invade a small 3d world country.

I see that some on the dems socialists are complaining that the flyover and limo lap were an abuse of power and waste of taxpayer's money.  I wouldn't be surprised to see new demands for impeachment for yesterday's 'high crimes'.

Trump, making America great again for all citizens, every day in every way.

Better than the alternative of making America more socialist and less free with every action.

MARTHA RADDATZ: "Mr. Steyer, you say that you can take on Donald Trump on the economy. But the latest Quinnipiac national poll again released just this week says 70 percent of voters describe the nation's economy as excellent or good" ... "You talk -- you talk about the wealthy. They're not all wealthy people. Seventy percent say the economy is good and they're doing well." ... "I'm telling you about a national poll. I'm not standing up for anybody. I'm telling -- I'm telling you about a national poll.".

I can't ever remember a time, since I've been paying attention, when 70% of voters agreed on anything.  And 95% of Republicans think Trump is peachy-keen.   cooldude
