Interesting article on WaPO:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/04/14/state-department-cables-warned-safety-issues-wuhan-lab-studying-bat-coronaviruses/

Basically there were two labs in Wuhan researching corona viruses from bats that had lacking security protocols.

USA State officials visited the labs in 2018 and reported serious concerns related to their security handling dangerous viruses.

Quotes: "As my colleague David Ignatius noted, the Chinese government’s original story — that the virus emerged from a seafood market in Wuhan — is shaky. Research by Chinese experts published in the Lancet in January showed the first known patient, identified on Dec. 1, had no connection to the market, nor did more than one-third of the cases in the first large cluster. Also, the market didn’t sell bats."

So I guess that clears the Chinese people of 'eating bats' in Wuhan.
:-D

On the other hand, it would help to explain the actions of the Chinese government towards obscuring the virus origins and failing to share information with the scientific community.

After all, if it just happened naturally (i.e. in a wet market) it is a 'natures act' not something that the responsibility is of the Chinese governmental authorities.

Quote: "The Chinese government, meanwhile, has put a total lockdown on information related to the virus origins. Beijing has yet to provide U.S. experts with samples of the novel coronavirus collected from the earliest cases. The Shanghai lab that published the novel coronavirus genome on Jan. 11 was quickly shut down by authorities for “rectification.” Several of the doctors and journalists who reported on the spread early on have disappeared."

Thought the article was interesting and decided to share. Please let's keep the discussion civil and avoid racist comments.

What you think is more probable for the virus origin? A natural occurrence or a security failure at a government lab?

And patient zero disappear-o!   coolsmiley

I didn't vote as my jury is still out.  Hopefully time will tell.

Like I've stated before, it's China's bouncing baby - - whether it was conceived naturally or by artificial insemination in their lab.

...or maybe both.....

"And then there is this little-known fact: Some Chinese researchers are in the habit of selling their laboratory animals to street vendors after they have finished experimenting on them.

You heard me right.

Instead of properly disposing of infected animals by cremation, as the law requires, they sell them on the side to make a little extra cash. Or, in some cases, a lot of extra cash. One Beijing researcher, now in jail, made a million dollars selling his monkeys and rats on the live animal market, where they eventually wound up in someone’s stomach."

US officials were so concerned by what they saw that they warned of a potential pandemic stemming from the lab's work on bat coronaviruses.

What the U.S. officials learned during their visits concerned them so much that they dispatched two diplomatic cables categorized as Sensitive But Unclassified back to Washington. The cables warned about safety and management weaknesses at the WIV lab and proposed more attention and help. The first cable, which I obtained, also warns that the lab’s work on bat coronaviruses and their potential human transmission represented a risk of a new SARS-like pandemic. -Washington Post

"During interactions with scientists at the WIV laboratory, they noted the new lab has a serious shortage of appropriately trained technicians and investigators needed to safely operate this high-containment laboratory," reads a January, 2018 cable drafted by two officials from the embassy's environment, science and health sections who met with scientists from the WIV.

Of note, the Obama administration 'paused' funding to the WIV, which was lifted a year into Trump's presidency according to the National Review.

On Feb. 14, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for a new biosecurity law to be accelerated. On Wednesday, CNN reported the Chinese government has placed severe restrictions requiring approval before any research institution publishes anything on the origin of the novel coronavirus.

I'm a thinking that is likely what happened.

(I'm sure China has laws prohibiting such things though. <- High intensity Sarcasm font)

But this is China. Folks on that side of the Globe eat stranger stuff than bats. I'd bet the labs, or someone at the labs, have been getting rid of their research bats at local wet markets or to local restaurants for years. This time they just came with a particularly nasty engineered virus.

I voted!  This helped my jury come back in.  I'm 99% convinced a lab is the source.  It's an Artificially Inseminated Chinese Bǎobǎo.
