Author Topic: Hi/Low Headlight issue on 99 IS  (Read 1094 times)

So with the weather starting to get nice in Illinois, I am looking at pulling my bike out of storage.  With that i want to get some parts ready for some quick repairs.  You guys have already helped me with my Fog Light issues and I just need to order the relay.  My other issue is with my headlights.  Every so often when I switch up to my high beams and then back down to Low, the low don't come on.  If i leave them alone they might come on by themselves, or I play with the switch or flip it a couple times and they come back on.  Once on they are fine and don't go out until my bike turns off or I flip them to High Beam.  I'm not sure if that's a switch issue or if I have another bad relay.  I have tried to look up Relay info for the headlights but couldn't find anything.  So any help would be greatful.  These are the Bulbs I am using:

As far as I know they draw less power then the OG ones so I shouldn't have burned anything out, but I guess I could also be wrong.

I'm betting a dirty switch (and not a relay).  There are electrical cleaner/lube sprays (like by CRC) with the little skinny nozzle which I stick in the rocker switch crack and spray and work the switch a few seconds.  Disassembly is more work but might be necessary, but I've never had to do it.  

I run off-road 80-100 watt halogens in my interstates, and rarely hit the brights (and even more rarely ride at night).  My trouble is one bulb tends to go out once in awhile, but it's not the bulb, just the connection, so I get off and press my thumb against the back of the electrical plug, and I have two lights again.

 

I generally squirt this stuff in all my switches and keyholes after any rain ride and after washing (and drying).

This stuff is very good (if Radio Shack is still around anymore).

I've had luck with WD 40 too. Stick the red straw in an opening and flood it. Put a rag under it to catch the overflow. Work the switches while flooding if you can. I do both switch sets, left and right at least once a year.

I got some of that stuff so I will have to give it a spray.  Yeah I had the connector issue myself.....but when I changed the lights that seemed to clear up.  I made sure to give the contacts a good clean and just made sure they looked good.

It may well be the switch, but I'll tell you about LED's.

LED's have a very short life span and when the start to go, they act just like yours are acting.

Is this still an OEM set up? I had a head light modulator, and it failed in one setting.

The IS does go through a relay, but it seems more like a switch issue than a relay one.

Flip the fairing forward and test the leads with a meter? Follow the schematic.
