OK, so in the last few years, I've needed two new fridges, a water heater, a bunch of plumbing, a new truck, a new toaster oven, and just last week a new HVAC AC and furnace.

And two days ago my TV started having all shiny green faces.  WTF over?  A very well rated Toshiba Regaza 37" 1080P high def TV, maybe 10 years old.

It's been a few years since I switched over to Verizon fiber optic and they had to trench around the property to run it, and I have had only a very few transmission problems (from HQ Verizon) that only lasted minutes/hours, but never a problem with my cable.

A quick search of green faces on-line tells me to unhook and rehook all my cables (exactly what all cable companies tell you to do first).

The other thing they say to do is go into your TV menu and go to color settings to see if you can get a better picture.  Once I got Verizon, I only used their remote.  When I first got the TV, I used the TV remote, and set it up per the manual, and recall using an automatic (default) setting, which has always been nearly perfect.  So I think I can find the manual, and put batteries back in the original TV remote and again try to diddle the color settings.   I have not done any of this yet.

Anyone got any other ideas for me?

It's just one thing after another, and I'm getting tired of it.

Jess, don't be such a tightwad. Valkorado is right, the new flat screens are getting much cheaper. When I had to move out of the house last August I left behind two perfectly good large tube type TV's and gave one to my granddaughter for one of her kid's rooms. After landing here in Wisconsin, the local Wally World was my go to place for a 50" for the living room and a slightly smaller one for the bedroom. Both are flatscreens and total investment less than $600(both Samsungs). Kinda amusing....in my old 'hood we had a saying; "if you want to get rid of something, put it on the curb like it's for trash p/u & it will be gone before sundown." Was true....didn't need to post a "free" sign or anything. My neighbor & I carried my perfectly good 32" tube TV out and left it at the curb. A passer-by drove by 3-4 times, then stopped and struggled for 20 min. to get it in the trunk of his old VW. Once loaded, away he went with the car looking like a giant bug with its mouth wide open.  Grin

One has a clutch problem.

Honestly, I'm kind of afraid to try and fix the TV (or replace if necessary) because sure a there are little green apples, as soon as that is solved, some other thing will break down.

It's like my karma has run over my dogma.

EDIT: I have one spot for this TV and it's inside a small(er) (fancy oak) entertainment center, and only one of a dozen 37" screens would fit the open space (the frames of the screens were too wide).  So I not only have to shop for quality, but carry a measuring tape (because you can't trust published specs).

I still need to trouble shoot this because it's possible the TV is fine, and a new one would also have green faces.  Which would piss me off.

Your television is broken.  You have four options - live with it; replace it; have it repaired; or live without television.  Pick one and move on with life.

Buy a new one and if it has green faces take it back. If it’s all good throw the broken one away. Sheesh

Do you have a set of rabbit ears that you can check the TV tuner ? That would let you rule out the Verizon box or the TV as the source of the problem. If the problem is the Verizon box, go swap it with another. If it's the TV - well, you've been given your options...

I'm not a TV tech guy, but it might be worth troubleshooting to see if it's a connection issue.  If you are running RGB component cables from a cable box to your TV, one of them might have a bad connection.  Or try changing the HDMI cable, if that's what's feeding your TV signal.  If neither of those are the problem, borrow a TV with the same connection you are using to feed your TV, and see if it gets the same problem when connected.  If the borrowed TV works fine on your connection, go TV shopping.

Maybe replace the entertainment unit with something that you can sit the TV on top of.  You don't really need the drawers for VHS tapes anymore, right?

I would go to the color settings menu and hit factory settings restore, then auto color if it has one and see what happens. The rabbit ears and checking free channels would be next. There are three color boards on a TV and if one burns out, that is usually what you will experience.  Happened on my Sony

It goes like this.  I turn it on, and color is fine.  Then after a few minutes, human skin color most noticeably gets distorted to green and shiny silver (like Ray Bolger as the tin man in Wizard of Ozz).  Finally, most color is distorted and silvery.  Some channels are better than others (but I'm thinking that's irrelevant).

I still haven't tried any repair or remedies.

You still need to try the Verizon box, TV tuner, and have a good look at your connections.

IF the Verizon box has component cable (YPrPb + R/W audio) and your TV does also (in addition to HDMI), You might try them . Even trying the composite video (yellow jack)/ analog audio may help. But based on your last - I'm guessing it's new TV time. Not worth attempting repair.

am sure you have another smaller TV to plug in and check right?  most houses have 2-3 TV's.

If not, I bet a neighbor who you are friendly with can let you borrow a 32 inch TV he has in a bedroom for 5 minutes of hooking up and seeing if picture is fine.

if picture on his 32 inch TV is fine,  your TV is toast.   that is what I would do since 90% of the time is the TV going bad.  10 years nowadays is a long time for any TV to last not like the olden days where the console wood cabinets color 25 inch TV lasting 20-25 years or so before the picture tube went out.

I always get my TV's at Walmart usually Emerson/Element cheapo ones for 199 bucks or so and so far past 7+ years all 3 have lasted fine in my house largest being 50 inch, then 40 inch, then 32 inch.  My neighbor ONLY buys top of the line Samsungs and although good, pricey and he has been thru 2 top quality ones in 10 years so price does not always determine luck of how long they last in terms of reliability.

Just bought a 40 inch for the office monitor for 169.00 floor sample sale. HD the works with a warranty so they can be had pretty cheap.

Cookie had a good idea see if another tv does the same thing. Do you go through a cable box or some other to view tv channels, if so disconnect and reconnect.

The other thing is some tv's have the ability to update the firmware of the tv. See if you can do that, but without a remote that may be next to impossible.

From the sound it is more than likely fubar, but does not hurt to try these things the worse it can do is make it worse so then it will be decided for you.

Try hooking up another source to the TV input cables that are producing the green faces.
Hook up another TV to the cable company output cables that are producing the green faces.
If you don't have another source or another TV, you really need to move into the 21st century.
Sorry if this seems to obvious, but not sure what else to do to trouble shoot the problem.

I've only got the one.  Only need the one.

I do have an old (but nearly unused) big catho-tube Sony sitting on an entertainment center that used to be hers (because we never watched the same stuff).  She didn't take it with her, the trash people won't take it, I don't want to lift it, and I don't need the space.  Now I call it one of my antiques.

I gave my other huge catho-tube to my brother years ago.  He didn't want it.  If I try to give him the other one, he'll get angry with me.

Sorry for the hi-jack. You don't hold a candle to me. I have seven TVs in the house, all but one connected to a VHS player, three connected to a Fire Stick or Roku (and most connected to a DVD player). One in the garage (connected to a VHS player/DVD player, and converter/recorder). One in my RV. One 22" spare I am using at the office for ZOOM meetings. And at least six old analog TVs. I also have spare analog to digital converters, VHS players, and other converters.

OK, if you really want to trouble shoot this, you need to borrow a second TV or buy a second TV. Your other option is to enroll in TV repair classes until you reach the point you can diagnose your TV. Then you will have a back-up career.

you must be the only one with ONLY 1 TV in the house.

I have 3 (I think?) and think that is normal for most folks.  some like on here have 7 plus TVs and must be an awfully big house.

I had a 40 inch in the living room but decided black friday deal at walmart (or was it target?) get a 50 inch with built in apps like youtube, hulu, roko, amazon prime, etc, etc.   since 40 inch had none.  I think was 199 bucks on sale black friday deal for 50 inch element brand some 7 or so years ago.  personally, I cannot tell the difference from 200 vs. 800 dollar samsung.

I'll trouble shoot without another TV (the best I can).  It will work, or it won't.  If it doesn't, I will buy a new TV and then if the symptoms continue, I won't throw the old one away.

I'll not take TV repair classes, and I don't want a back up career.

If I've offended you sometime, I am sorry for it.

not to change subject, but why 2 new fridges?  I only have 1 fridge from 1993 still going and an old upright big freezer from who knows when guessing late 1970s or 1980s more like it.  they claim the new fridges and freezers use much less electrical power thus saving money, but will they last 25+ years?   See no money savings if  you replace them twice as much say every 15 years?

same can be said for hot water heaters.  I was told by several installers the tanks made in early 1990s and earlier were much thicker tanks,  thus why mine lasted 25 years or so before leaking.  They all told me when needed a new one they last on average only 12 years or so now.   Cry

back on TV topics  since you do not want to ask a friendly neighbor to borrow his 32 inch TV for a quick hookup to verify picture,  best of luck to you, but I really think the TV took a crapper.  New ones are so cheap nowadays I think that is the way to go  just hope you find one that lasts 10+ years is a crap shoot....

I have two med-small fridges because I don't have room in my galley kitchen for one big one.  I could make do with one, but like 2 (top) freezers for good supply.  Extra fridge space is always filled with potable water (and other liquids).

I bet my average electric bill is lower than most.... probably because I'm not running 8 TVs like you guys.

Jess I only have one tv also, there is really not much on tv and the wife and her decorating doesn't make room for another one by agreement. We have the space but the choice is to do without it. We have the tv in the bedroom and I have the computer in my office area. Its my entertainment area, so in both, the bedroom and in my office I have surround sound and able to play movies in either area or watch Netflix. So more tvs do not equate with anything really. My computer monitor is a 40' Samsung flat screen so with the surround sound and my desk chair it makes for great movie time.

yah, unless have 5-6 kids,  do not see the reason having 8 TV or even 5 to be honest.  I can see 1 if single or 2-4 if have kids, but those having 6+ WOW.   What I never could get is how people can ever live with no chest or upright near full sized freezer?  Ever since 1993 age 22 or so when built my house that first few months I went out and got at an auction an old upright freezer in good shape for under 100 bucks and ever since 1993 it has always been full or near full.  Lately,  I even have had to cut back buying frozen items in BULK  since NO room for even 2-3 ice cream buckets...  Just this past weekend ice cream was on sale and wanted to get 2 of them but knew NO room in my upright full sized freezer.  My ex neighbor when he wanted to show me his new fancy fridge opened both fridge/freezer area and hardly any food/drinks in either part wondering how does he survive?  They must have eaten out a lot is my guess since I know they had no upright freezer either.

OK, so in the last few years, I've needed two new fridges, a water heater, a bunch of plumbing, a new truck, a new toaster oven, and just last week a new HVAC AC and furnace.
At least your Valkyrie isn't on that list!
Planned obsolescence AND Chinese(CCP) outsourced crap components(like what happened to our Hitachi Alternators)
The devil IS the details. Bring the jobs home. Replacing my wife's chinese made cell phone soon(motorola)...going for Samsung or LG...until the're made here in North America, when?? who knows, soon I hope...hoping for a phone platform that is not spied on by Apple or Google as well.
BTW...kudos to Willow...I cut the cable as well. My Samsung flat screen is a monitor for my PC only...again...hoping for a NON!! google, microsoft or apple platform for a new PC at some point.

did not know some Motorola phones are made in China vs. LG or Samsung in the states.  I had a motorola cell phone and liked it about 5-6 years ago before I got a hammy down samsung s7 now which need to replace sometime if ever find a good deal on a new cell phone with US Cellular since the batteries no longer hold a full days charge.

With kids today most are on the cell phone and stream from them so most of them no tv needed. Usually its one big one in the family room, then as needed.

I refuse to buy any computers from the big mfgs and will build my own. Cheaper and I get exactly what I want in them and dont worry about bloatware. Also spyware is not so prevalant since you can pick from an assortment of MFG's

Motorola was sold to a Chinese(CCP) owned company, Lenovo,  some time ago. LG and Samsung are Korean, BUT at least not from China...although, like the Hitachi alt, might have components made there.
DAMN...it's time to bring it ALL back. We all traded our jobs for cheep(crap) Chinese products, and China thanked us by sending us spyware in everything they make including smart TV's(still looking for the spy chips in my aftermarket mag wheels)  Wink
