if you make it to sleeping bear dunes in MI, do NOT do what these guys do unless you want to not have a desirable time going uphill on that dune.

I did it with the at the time 2 younger kids when age 38 or so and not good.  Took me less than 2 minutes to run down but over 2 hours to crawl up on my hands and knees literally and in 85+ degree heat darn near died and am serious on that.  The older and heavier and out of shape you are the more you slide back downhill 1 step forward and 2 slides back for us heavier folks, thus the required need to crawl up on your hands and knees.  I finally got up and kids were laughing since well under 100lbs. at the time and had no issues going up.  My older daughter at the time guessing age 12 was worrying about me having to call 911 about 1/2 way up after near 1 hour.  You literally could not walk up the hill without at least crouched over on your hands as well but found it easier to go up on my hands and knees less sliding back downhill since plain old walking up on just my feet was pointless.

I went east last year, got the photos to prove it.
NOT Recommended on a Valkyrie, but would be a blast on a Enduro or similar.. Had her up to the axles in surgar-like powdery sand  uglystupid2

Indeed those Dunes can be brutal.  It was about 1961 or 62 when our family vacationed on Big Glenn Lake in that area, beautiful lake by the way as is the whole Leelenau Peninsula.   We went to the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes for the day. Myself and my sisters had a blast on the Dunes with myself going up and down from the parking lot several times, but I was only about 6 years old.  My Grandmother who was 69, all of 4' 11" and less than 100 lbs climbed it about 1/2 way.  Then we went on these Dune Buggies of the day and they rode the trails of the Dunes including the top.  Looking down on lake Michigan it looked straight down it seemed I remember being rather scared the buggy may just roll over all the way down. I also remember the driver getting a little air a time or two.  I am sure these things were retired or sued out of existance decades ago, but safety concerns in the early 1960s really had no concerns.  The one we were on was the 1st picture of the second row.

I'm surprised they didn't get stuck going up a dune. (They do look kind of dangerous)

Dangerous,  no doubt.  But sure was fun as a six year old.  They ran a regular sand trail as I remember that was much more packed down than just blasting routinely through the loose sand.  It was at least a half hour journey with magnificent views especially Lake Michigan from the top.

See y'uns Friday!  cooldude

Last time I was in Grand Marais, maybe 2014 or 15 there was a Polaris shop there that rented the 4 wheeler RZRs that would have no trouble going east.  Also a great restaurant brewery there called Lake Superior Brewing Company.  Good food and I loved their blueberry wheat beer, probably blueberries from Michigan.   Back in early 80s myself and some good buddies took our snowmobiles up to Black Lake to my friends lake house.  One night we went to a bar in Cheboygan, MI chasing nurses.  Bob Seger was their by himself I believe and me and my friend Rick may have been the only ones  to know who he was as no one bothered him.  He was only about 15 minutes out of Mackinaw City instead of 12 hours.  Hope you guys and gals have a blast and just maybe next year things will work out for me.

I remember doing this dune ride as a kid in the 60s also...

The "East / West H-58" photo...

... is directly in front of Lake Superior Brewing.  Ate there Wednesday. The Whitefish Tacos are awesome - fresh caught and fried just right! They no longer had the blueberry wheat beer, probably due to Zombie Cooties. Only a Lager and a Brown now.

Grand Marais is a beautiful place, we watched the sailboats on the bay, ate wild raspberries, walked the beach, got stung by bees (not Murder Hornets, though...).
Having fun, waiting for the rest of the crew now...

Whatever it is, it's better in the wind.

On a road less traveled.

Brian, just love that picture of you two.....
Started some planning for next year and told Petra we need to do the Mac, she's a bit apprehensive for that though...time will get her through it. She just did the Million Dollar HWY, Independence Pass and many others without a problem.
You guys have a grand time.

there are places in MI on the dunes to rent dune buggies / ATV's etc.

I thought about going there on my Can Am 2-up but heard the sand can get into the CV boots and cause all kinds of havoc..  All I would need is a whip flag on my ATV and good to go, and air down the tires.  Have seen a few 4wd trucks/SUV's airing down their tires normal road vehicles as well their own daily drivers on the sand dunes as well.  Once again,  not so sure a 30K truck fling sand all over will not harm the paint, especially the way paint is water based and paper thin now.    You look the wrong way at the paint on vehicles nowadays and scratches show up very easily.
