While I'm NOT sure thinkin it was a clear coat. On my 99 I/S the fork lowers were lookin a tad shabby. Took some 400 grit sand paper and scuffed it off-the clear coat. Some california purple metal polish and some elbow grease the fork lowers came out lookin better than when I started-If I duz say so myself! RIDE SAFE.

I’ve polished several sets of fork lowers. I start with oven cleaner to remove the OEM sealer. Wash off and then use wet n dry sandpaper. Start with maybe 400-600. Move up to 800 and finish with 1200. Then go to metal polish and a buffing wheel on a drill motor. Before starting, remove the wheel and fender.

Just polish it off with elbow grease and aluminum polish. It’s easy

I don't think so. I think my '01 Standard only has the clearcoat on the wheels and pumpkin. It looks like a thin amount of oxidation to me. I think Jeff is right. It should clean up well with some aluminum polish.

Yes, definitely OEM clear on the triple tree and lower forks I didn't know that. I'll have to look closer.

I'm going to have to go with Chrisj CMA on this one. He is the expert on bike polishing (and .50 caliber S&W).

Yep. OEM. Same on my 98. You can polish it as many have said or use soap and an sos pad to just clean it up.

I used some 600 grit wet sand paper, then rubbing compound, then Mother's aluminum polish. Far from perfect, but better than it was yesterday. I did nothing to the lower forks at this time--those will have to wait. Thanks to everyone for your advice. Not a bad looking ride, especially given it is 19 years old.

Yes, the original WORKS. I thought the OEM shocks were a little soft, so I put on Progressive 440s, but not the heavy duty model. I thought the Progressives were also a little soft, so I got the WORKS. That was 2008 and I have been satisfied since.

I have bottomed out a few times with wife on back over rough roads/divets/holes my I/S. not fun and that is with the rear shocks set as firm as possible. I guess my near 20 year old Valk is trying to tell me something?
