Leaving tomorrow Wed. AM and flying to Denver then up to Estes Park, CO for a 4 day hike From elevations of 7,800 to about 10,000 ft. This is a planned hike from "FootPaths of the World" a husband and wife team, David & Phebe Novie. They will not lead us we are on our own but they keep up with us, 4 couples. I believe the trail name is The Walter Tishma Way. The first day will be the Cow Creek Trailhead to Estes Park; elevation start 7,837 to 8,830. 2nd day, Deer Mt. Alpine Trail Ridge; elevation start 7,569 to 10,013. 3rd day Storm Pass/Estes Cone; eleveation start 8,035 to 9,852. 4th day Wild Basin to Allenspark; elevation start 8,245 to 9,472. Some of you may know what this is all about but if not i reccommend you visit: info@footpathsoftheworld.com save me some typing. I'll hope to get back in one piece

Keith,
Pretty doggone ambitious there, amigo! Heck, I get all tuckered out just walking to the fridge and back... Bound to be some adventure on a trek like that, so... Like John, said... don't be like this forgetful old coot and forget now, ya hear?

Ditto! Be careful Keith, don't want to throw a wet blanket on it but the last time we were visiting out there I got real sick for a couple days....altitude change from the flatlands to high elevation. Really hope you have a great time.

sounds like a good time, take an easy going uphill and hope you walked a lot prior to get in somewhat decent shape. Take lots of rest stops for breathing heavy is not good that I know when walking uphills. going up is an issue, but going down for me is easy...

Just an FYI, Medivac gets much more difficult at high altitude. This assumes there's a clearing available. Been there, done that. Rams

On a leg of a two-wheeled excursion 2013, after spending the night in Hot Sulpher Springs we went over the mountain through RMNP, down through Estes Park to Ft. Collins . Wife didn't feel good while up on the mountain. Made our way to kids place in Ft. Collins by early afternoon. She struggled to regain her composure during rest at kids house. A few hours later I ended up calling an ambulance for my wife. Had a bad case of vertigo - altitude sickness. Spent the night and most of the next day in the hospital while they managed to get her view of the world to quit spinning in circles. Took her a few days to regain her composure. RMNP is a beautiful place.

Thank you all for your health concerns. Believe me I don't want to go thru what some of you have mentioned. I'm in pretty good shape and have been walking, running and biking for over a month. I love water and constantly drink my fill. I have been at high altitudes several times over the many years and have not had any issues. It has always been in the winter months though. This will be my first experience of hiking and not skiing at this altitude though. I will take plenty of pic's to share when we get back.

Just an FYI, Yesterday was talking to a lady in the Denver area, she kept coughing during our conversation. I asked if she was OK. Her reply was that due to all the smoke from the forest fires, it was hard to breath. She was inside an office in Denver. Just something to think about.

My comment would be to watch for electrical storms at high altitude, especially in the afternoons. Many Colorado hikers try to be off the peaks by noon on thunderstorm days.

I rode in CO a few years ago when there were wild fires. Having smoke forced up yer nose at speed wasn't fun. Really ruined my ride from South Fork to Gunnison.

Well I'm back and it was a "hike to remember" Beautiful area and no issues at all. We hiked 10 miles a day for 4 days. Starting at 7,800 ft with changes up to 10+ elevation. It was a challenge but all went well. No issues with anyone other than being sore. I hope you like the pic's .... better in person of course. https://postimg.cc/gallery/62m9njphttps://postimg.cc/gallery/pvM10XtClick on the pic to enlarge it. The lodges that we stayed in were really neat. We stayed at the Stanley one night but I didn't get a picture. This is where the Shining was filmed with Jack Nickelson. The other two lodges we stayed in our there. Baldpate INN was really cool and it was featured on a documentary a month or so ago. The Allenspark Lodge was old as well built in the 30's. The owners live and run the lodge on site. We woke to a wonderful breakfast. They ring the cow bell to let you know that it is ready.

Do you do any training like resistance, ruck or run? How old are you? 40 mi in 4 days is no joke, especially if you're untrained.. My perspective comes from a 61 yo guy, I don't recover as quickly as I did even 10 yrs ago.
