My NAS and my UPS talk to each other.  We had a meeting one day, me the NAS and the UPS and decided that if the NAS sees that it's on battery power from the UPS for more than a few minutes, it will shut itself down.  That way I don't need to be around when it happens.

Hey that is interesting and I did not know that was an option but, seems like something that would be reasonable for them to include.

In my case, I have a 20KW standby Kohler generator.  So, unless it fails or I run out of natural gas, I should be ok. 

We have never had a power outage longer than four or five hours. 

But still I will see how that might be implemented on mine.

Yah, my UPS have the ability to do the same, problem is I have 2 UPS powering a total of 4 NAS devices and 2 ESXi servers, but can only connect a single device to each UPS, so it doesn't help so much...
