Bonnie and I walked to shul today for Rosh Hashanah services
The shul is large and has garage doors that open 50+ feet wide so breeze was nice today
However
The temple instituted a policy of you had to request a seat by email and sit beyond 6 feet apart
We did not get the email and as a result when Bonnie called to see what was going on we were well over 100 feet back in the social hall and i could not see the bima (stage) where the Torah is read.
We were required to wear masks (ok I can do that for others)
But nobody would shake our hand or come close
We walked to the side to listen to the service and after the Torah was read we left

To us  COMMUNITY is a very important part of services

I mourn the loss of community for those of all religions
But hope for the best to come

I understand we are one of the few congregations OPEN for actual prayer and not just virtually

Evan at least you can Worship in your chosen place. And I understand Community. So many folks here where I live that I used to hug-well Sadly that went by the wayside shortly after I got back home January this year.  Undecided  I have No idea how long It's been since I've seen the inside of the Church I attend. The Awful specter of preexisting conditions I have.  Cry But when I am around my Family we still hug!  smitten                               RIDE SAFE.

Sturgiss had 467,000 people attend.. inside, outside, near no masks and social distancing was not practiced. I know the MSM has scoured the country looking to tie the event to mass infections.. didn't happen.

Sweden is rumored to go from 50 people gathering limit to 500 and masks are optional..

Sweden got it right from the start IMHO

I read that 1 person that attended Sturgis rally died reportedly from the virus. When talking about 467,000, 1 is pretty close to zero.

Probably killed by a hooker named Covid.

My family doc told me he had a patient die of C19. He had a failing heart and would have died from an allergic reaction to dust, but C19 hit him and he was gone in a day. COD; Covid, but was it really??

I had to study cause of death many times in connection with Veteran's disability claims appeals.

If a veteran is service connected for any disease or injury that causes (significantly contributes to or hastens) his death, additional benefits are payable to surviving dependents, if any (including educational benefits for children), and the higher of two burial benefits.  So we got a lot of claims.

Once someone has one, two or three significant ongoing disabilities, it often gets pretty difficult to determine actual cause of death.  Short of a gunshot wound to the head or drowning or some other big superseding (all other disabilities) cause.

So many (medium to real) older people may have 1-5 significant ongoing problems for quite some time, then they get a bad cold or virus, then pneumonia and die.  Did they die from pneumonia, or a cold or a virus?  Generally, yes; though their weakened condition from all (or some) preexisting disabilities is also a large contributing factor.

This in no way justifies medical authorities putting Covid19 on the top line of a death certificate in order to collect more insurance or federal funding, if Covid was not the principle cause of death.  But with multiple significant disabilities at the same time, and serious meds for all of them, it is often very difficult to weed out.

For VA purposes, cause of death is defined as any significant contributor to death, simply because the G has always bent over backwards to support disabled veterans.  There can be multiple causes of death for VA purposes.

Many, many death certificates list cardiopulmonary arrest on the top line.  That means the heart stopped beating.  Every single person who dies has their heart stop beating, including many who have no heart disease of any kind.  So that's sloppy work.

The other thing I noticed over the years of doing these appeals... when old people with a handful of preexisting disabilities die, the medical authorities often don't waste much time filing out the death certificate.  Thus.... "their heart stopped."  No kidding.

Most death certificates have three blank lines for cause of death (which in practice should be listed in order of importance), and three blank lines for any other contributing factors which did not significantly lead to death.

Just to give you an idea of VA cause of death complexity;  I had a case where the veteran was service connected for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder with a high rating (70%, not total but significant).  He had been out of service for many years, but plenty of drugs and alcohol, and arrests/convictions for assault and jail.  So he is arrested for DUI, and not searched well, and manages to pull out a gun and kill two policeman, and after trial and conviction, and the passage of years is executed by lethal injection for his murders.  His PTSD was raised at his trial, but he was found sane at the time of the crimes (and at the time of execution).  His wife claimed his service connected PTSD caused his death by execution by the G.  I did not pay her.

We have been fortunate to be able to hold church services through most of this but Oss its as you said. This is the plan though, and you may want to look at a case in California that a church is fighting against the State. Its a back and forth game with the states in the courts like a yes,no,yes and the state is making major challenges to them opening up.

Hey Oss, first off Happy Belated New Year  :  I hope the upcoming year holds many good things for you, family and friends.

As for attending services, I’m sure it hurt without shaking of hands as well as that feeling nobody would come near you, that hits home on a very personal level.

While I’m not versed in the Jewish faith and how each holy day is observed, I do know they are held in the highest regard and the sense of community plays a big role.

We’ll get back to normal soon but it would be nice to see all faiths come together and as a group and make appeals to the courts regarding the fundamental right to worship and the restrictions in place have been a burden on the community of all religions.

I'm not much of a religious man (more of the "only reason I go to church is marrying them and burying them") , but I support the idea that those who are more active in their faith should be allowed to exercise their Freedom of Religion as stated in the Constitution / Amendments.

I also think this isolation is bad for everyone, not just the elderly. One reason I'm so active here.

angel We've been able to watch our church service on TV while things were shut down for COVID. Our doors opened 2 Sundays ago and now Hurricane Sally has caused damage to our main sanctuary but hope to have fixed in the weeks to come. What I really miss is our SS class. Great folks and being with other belivers lifts us all. We are the oldest Church in Pensacola, over 150 years.  smitten

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't the Catholic Pope state it is a sin for not going to Catholic Church mass?  If the Catholic churches were shut down for worship which know some were,  why is it a sin since not the Catholic people's fault unable to go to church?   If true,  seems like a not so smart thing to say?

Most people need some sort of social interaction in their lives more so than others to stay sane.  Being couped up more so than others am surprised more suicides have not happened the past 5 months or so.
