what i have done  was check the starter button but new electric grease all good. the kill switch was ok i just ran a few test.  starter relay was put on ( new) it did not help goes dead when button pushed.
i had this bike 24 yrs and never had this problems before  1997 160,000 miles  one other problem the tilt relay  does it go with the curved side down or the square side

sounds like a loose battery connection to me. or a dead cell in the battery.

Did you use dielectric grease? If so, that may be part of the problem, that grease is an insulator not meant to use directly on contacts. It's not made to pass the juice but to insulate it from passing. Actually it sounds like you got something wet, I've never sprayed water in/around anything electric in the 2-3 times I've washed the bike in the last 18 yrs or so.

The tip-over switch behind the center cover has an arrow
on it.  Is that the "tilt relay"?

Also sounds like battery. Try to jump start from a known working vehicle, not running.

When it "goes dark", are you talking about the head light? Sounds like the starter switch is sticking in the start area, but not making contact. Your starter switch needs cleaning. Already done it? It was not done right. Read up on it first, so you don't ruin it like I believe the last person did. Come back with more detail when you have more information.

i want to thank everybody that  took the time to answer my question....

my bike was playing with me. it seems that my battery was not ready to retire yet. after reading some of the archives they talk about battery so i took my battery out of my car.. that was it its funny that every thing started working. off to get a battery ..

my final question what good battery is working in our valks  i been using ytx14bs  can not even remember when i got the battery.. i took a trip up to alaska in 2010 i have not got a new battery since then it sat for a couple yrs i had heart trouble.

ytx14bs yuasa is a good battery.

I got one of these in 2014, it still starts my Tourer
easily...

That little button on the front there tells you if the battery is good bad or marginal
when you mash it. I haven't mashed it recently  Shocked ...
