Friend of mine gave me some 12 ga. ammo this past summer. It looks
to be pretty old. Some of it says "Sears" on it. I don't think they've
made ammo for 3 or 4 hundred years! Anyway, does shotgun ammo
go bad? How can I tell? If it's bad, I sure don't want to throw it in
the trash, so how can I dispose of it? Thanks.

I agree with Joe.  Try a few and keep them if good.  DON'T throw them in the trash or a fire!  Shocked

If you don't want them, you can give them to a shotgun owner that may.

Take a close look at them, if they look OK then they probably are.
Ammo has a long shelf life when stored with reasonable caution.

As long as they were not subject to intense heat, water, or vibration they may be OK.

To detect powder issues , carefully cut one shell apart, if the powder appears to have gone bad, it will smell bad and could be dry and easy to crumble. If so dispose of them, rather than shoot them. Pete.

If its been stored reasonably it will be fine.  Shoot it!  Ive even shot old paper shot gun shells that had been laying in a box for 40 years.  They shot like they were brand new.

Look at the primers....have they bled/stained?  If clean they will probably go boom.  This is range fodder, not home defense ammo.

I have a half box of stuff that is probably 20-30 years old (no leaks).  Shot a couple 10years ago, it went boom.

About 10 years ago I got a hold of a few thousand rounds of WWII issue .45 ACP... (It'd been sent to Russia, the Ruskies never used it and left it in a warehouse, then sold it back to the US civilian market after the fall of the Soviet Empire)

This stuff was headstamped as manufactured in the early 1940's.

Shot it up fine with no problems... (And yeah, I kept a few for posterity!)

(And also yeah, I assumed it was corrosive and acted accordingly)
