30 years of successful riding and had to lay her down... I’m guessing guy in front of me was on his phone looked up saw brake lights and did a panic stop. I had no where to go it was a construction zone and going left would of put me into a concrete barrier. So I slowed as much as possible and braced for impact. I’ll have pics of the bike later, I walked to the ambulance to find out later I had 6 broken ribs, busted collar bone and punctured lung. There was no slide I was just thrown off the bike and landed on my shoulder. I’d estimate less than 5 mph when all was said and done... so all is well and I’m finally home hopefully get the bike back on the road come spring...

30 years is a pretty good run. Could have been worse. I'm obviously not a doctor, but I'd be a little concerned about the punctured lung. Do they do anything for that ?

Having been there and done that, be prepared to be pretty sore for the next few weeks.

I won't go into details but, I know from experience and healing takes longer as we get older.

Rest and rehab will do wonders.

Never a good thing, but as is my usual statement on threads like this, being able to post about it is better than the alternative. Best of luck on the rehab and recovery.

"on his phone" reminded me of my ride today. I took the V Strom out for a rip this afternoon. I was on a wide, windy road, at an area with no homes or businesses for at least 3/4 of a mile. My wrist was a bit aggressive, one might say. I came around a corner to see a state trooper coming the other way. Busted!! Or so I thought. As we passed, I saw here scrolling through her phone. Never even looked in my direction. I guess I should consider myself double lucky. No ticket, and I wasn't run over by her inattentiveness. Yeah; it ain't right that she wasn't focused on the road, but I'll take it!

Two things come immediately to mind. Yer here to relate the tale. It could have been Much worse. My broken ankle in 16 after an unload took longer than I expected to heal. And I was Only 71 when that happened. 2funny Again-happy yer sorta okey dokey but least ways yer still suckin wind.  cooldude RIDE SAFE.

Sorry for your troubles.  I hope you and the bike can be fixed up.

This sounds similar to Scooper's recent troubles.

Not to be preachy, but we all have to be able to stop within the assured clear distance ahead, at all times.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assured_clear_distance_ahead

Pretty detailed and mathematical, but it comes down to leaving a bit more space between you and the guy ahead of you.  (It gets even worse if the guy behind you can't stop in time either.)

Apparently in my case just rest and wait. Normally they insert a chest tube but due to location and I guess the fact it wasn’t severe enough to warrant it I was spared...

I hate that having no where to escape feeling.

Glad you’re home and for the most part ok. Hope you heal up fast and at 100%, do what the doctors say.

Hope things are ok with the bike for the most part.

Sorry to hear this. Our arses are definetly very exposed for world to see but....
I've had pretty good success with the use off the Back Off long before a vehicle gets to close but it's still a crap shoot if they pay attention or not.

Heal well sir.

Best of luck on the recovery. It's taken me about 10 days to not need muscle relaxers , although I'm still taking my Aleve or Tylenol for soreness. Rest and don't do too much too fast. Bike will still be there to work on later - you just acquired an offseason project Smiley .

They gave me a pharmacy to bring home I’m staying away from the hard stuff if possible so far so good. I’m surprised no surgery for the collar bone or lung but time will tell...

Don't blame you at all about staying off narcotics - I DO NOT want to get hooked on them. First 24 hours won't be too bad, but the next 48 are likely to be the hardest period. it was for me, but fortunately - no broken bones.

I’m past the 72 hr mark, extremely sore the tough part is the ribs right under the clavicle also are broken so that whole area is killing me. Affecting more muscles than I could imagine.

Good reminder for us to always drive for our selves and all the other idits. I know sometimes I forget to give myself that buffer space and others are always trying to slip into  my safe space also. Heal fast and ride another 30.  Wink
