I did the glass pack mod on my bike, but I used 18" Purple Honey's. I had a HD guy pull up next to me and said that it was the best sounding Valk he has ever heard.

Okay, do a Google search.

Type in glass pack mufflers and set back and relax.

You will probably need at least a 1/2 hour to 3/4 hour to read all the reponses.........

There is Jeg's, Summit, JC Whitney, Amazon and you name it.

I Even saw one for Purple Hornie's........

Purple Hornies or Cherry Bombs, Autozone carries both.

The one thing to remember for example, if you are going to use 4" stacks make sure the outside dia. of the glass pack is under 4" so I fits inside the stack.  A 4" stack inside dia. is: 4" minus two times the thickness of the wall of the stack, that should be the max. outside dia. of the glass pack.

I'd sure like to hear Purple Hornies sometime to compare to my Cherry Bombs.  Cherry Bombs are what I think Mark T put in my exhaust that is on my I/S.  My Std came with the glasspack mod done by the previous owner.  He couldn't tell me what he used.

Glass packs are widely available at least in my area. I used a pair of generic GPs from a local muffler shop. They are all about the same, length is really the only variable.
When I was making my GP conversion I did some reading on the subject from folks who had done this before me & there were two main factors I followed.
Size. Keep the inside diameter of the GP at 2 inches.
Direction. Have the "cups" or "scallops" of the inside of the GP pointed against the exhaust flow.
Using these directives should keep the back pressure of the GP close to the same as the stock exhaust as to not require a rejetting. A larger inside diameter and/or pointing the "scallops" with the exhaust flow would lessen the back pressure too much. Length is more towards the tone or sound. Longer=mellower.
I did the GP conversion on my Valk about 35,000 miles ago & I still love it.

The reason I did the GP was I had a nasty rattle in the LH stock muffler that just kept getting worse. I guess a baffle had come loose.

I chopped up the back section of the stock muffler & welded it to the body of the GP so I could re-use the stock shields & bolt on the tips.

I made a new set of tips out of 4" chrome tips bought at the same muffler shop I bought the GPs from. Whacked the rounded end off the tips with a chopsaw. The muffler shop also made the reducers for me that mated the stockheadpipe to the GP. I welded two 5/16" bolts to the body of the GPs that bolted up to the stock muffler brackets.

Only problem that I have had with this set up is the dreaded "GP drone" did start to get to me. Maybe it is just me getting older or the kinda short GPs I chose but there was a definite drone. I blamed it on the exhaust echo-ing in the 4" tips. Sooooo................

I snagged a couple of stainless tips from the warranty bin of the Lincoln dealership I work at. Welded them on 2" extensions to bring the sound out past the bigger 4" tips.
Drone gone & it is just a tad quieter too.  cooldude

Definetly a different look.
And yes I know.... I put the 4" tips on upside down!  Cheesy uglystupid2

That's my glasspack conversion story.  Cool

Hey Tropic, I would love to hear your glass packs. I live in Ocala also and haved toyed with the idea of the mod . I have the ability and place to do it but want to hear them first. I kind of like the silent Valk and want to be careful not to go to far (noise level).

Maybe I could meet you somewhere and listen to your exhaust,

Thanks

Valkmc, I usually meet the gang up at the Silver Springs Wal-Mart parking lot on Thursday nights. It's just a big informal bike gathering where everyone kicks tires & swaps lies. It's at the far side of the lot next to the Burger King.
There are usually several Valks there with varying types of exhausts so if you head on over you'll get to hear several different exhaust sounds.  cooldude
Come on over sometime!

Thanks,  I went over a few times when I first got the Valk (1998) and had a good time. Forgot all about it.   I normally teach GED to inmates on Thursday night but have the ability to swap a night every once in awhile. I will try to get over there one Tlhursday at the end of the month. It would be great to listen to some exhuast before I start cutting things up.

Hey Tropic......I tried my stacks the way you have yours installed (to address a droning issue) and within a short time I noticed the bottom edge of the bags were being scorched by the exhaust heat....might want to keep an eye on yours.

PS.....to didn't do anything for the drone so I reinstalled them the other way.

Riowil, never had any issues with exhaust heat or bag scorching and I had the tips like that for over 30,000 miles. The exhaust gas now completely exits through the smaller inner tips so even less chance now. Wink
The inner tips seem to have added a bit more backpressure too. The Valk seems to like it!  cooldude
