Settling in behind the bike on Sunday after poking my head into the house and shouting out a warning to the Mrs, and closing the garage doors and turning up the volume on the game on the TV so that any of my neighbors that may have been out and about wouldn't be subjected to the barage of #*&**x# - words that I was sure were going to be flying in short order as I set about mating the shaft up to the U-joint after the rear drive service, I was left speechless as it miraculously just slid right in with no obstruction at all on the first try. "This couldn't be right" I told myself as I scooted around to the side to align the bolts and snug the drive unit up flush. "I must have done something wrong or forgot something", I continued talking to myself.  No, apparently it was true...I'd actually managed to make this particular chore a one-step process for the very first time.
Excited to get the new Cobra Chromes put on along with another couple coats of wax (gotta try and keep up with that Cobra Bike down in FL Wink), and get the old girl back on the road as soon as the weather and roads clear up on a regular basis...a couple of good day rides and I'll be hitting the 200,000 km mark cooldude

You know what they say. "It's better to be lucky than good"  Smiley I'm curious why you removed the heat shield on the bag mount ?

Whatever it is, it's better in the wind.

On a road less traveled.

Mike, sure glad I wasn't helping you, as the law is always on my side and we would probably still be trying to get the shaft and U Joint together.
Even when I am successful the first time, (very rarely does it ever happen) I am so in doubt that I will pull whatever I am doing apart again to make sure I didn't miss something, and then I know I didn't because for the next several hours I cannot get the thing back together, so I know I did it right......   tickedoff

When ever I take the rear end apart I take the heat shields off.  It's easier to get at the pumpkin and caliper parts and pieces, plus I always scuff em up and repaint.

Them suckers are big denaro Shocked

Cleaning the top of the pipes and bag mount hardware also.

MSB, I like the look of the baffles or end pieces in the pipes.  Can't say I've seen them before.

Bingo, Hook. Just taking heat shield and rail mounting screws out gives that tiny extra bit of clearance to slide the axel out easily for me. Plus as you say it's a great opportunity to clean and polish the pipes and the bag support rails to keep them from rusting. A lot of crud gets stuck in there I've found, and it really only takes a minute to remove them. Good idea about repainting,  I'll do that this time.

These are 4" marine silencers that my Valhalla buddy Gordonv found for me. I have a big bore 12" glass pack in my truck stacks exhaust...awesomely loud on shorter day rides, but they get annoying on longer rides especially at higher speeds. Easy in, easy out...these just bolt in with a set screw/bolt and really tone the sound down a lot. So much so that whenever I ride with others, they'll even let me move up from the back of the pack now once in while  Grin

Mike,

I seem to remember that you stayed towards the rear of the group to and from Morgantown.

Happy New Year!!!

I hope you didn’t snug up those four bolts enough to impede the free movement required to attain final drive to wheel alignment.

No, of course I didn't...after all, you are the primary source for my "training" on this particular maintenance procedure, right? Smiley
I meant that I just nudged it in the last half inch or so, getting the studs all the way in ...I was so shocked it went in so easy. Haven't even put the nuts back on yet, have to wait untl I get the new tire mounted in a day or so.
