When the Valk dies out, I'll get a HD Road Glide. I only ride with Valks maybe x5 a year. :'( I ride with HD's every week. My HD friends roll the way we like to roll. Sterotyping bikers is a pet peeve of mine. Kit and I are both tattooed, piereced, anti-helmet, leather clad, bar hoppers, and gun totting. Not your sterotypical Valk rider is it? Hey Fudgie - If I'm not mistaken that sure looks like the Dungeon Bar in Sturgis ... pretty cool bar. Why yes it is! Is that your underware hanging on the ceiling? So far its our favorite bar. Scenery is not as good as One-Eyeds, but i like the atmosphere. We frequented it so much this year that Dawn the b'tender had 2 opened up on the bar for us when we would get to the bottom of the stairs. Thats service!

Brother Fudgie,
I wish everyone had your attitude. We have only met a couple of times but I know that you would have my back in a heartbeat and I would have yours.
I am so tired of the Harley vs Honda. Yes, I know a Valk is faster than a Harley and could give a rat's ass. My Harley is fast enough for me. What's more important to me is my Harley Electra Glide Classic is more comfortable than my Valkyrie Interstate, hands down and with my bad back thats all that matter.
The only thing that matters to me is that you ride, not what you ride.

One of my best ridin' buds rides a Harley...He rides it like he stole it and its never let him down. I've rode it many times he also has a Kawasaki Mean Streak 1600 that I've rode many times as well I will say I like it better than the Harley.

Granted, I don't ride the Harley as much as the rest of the herd, but it is the ONLY one of my current group of motors that has NEVER left me on the side of the road. When the Valk stranded me (simple fuse holder problem) I was summarily passed up by one Harley and two Honda Crotch Rockets. The guy that stopped to help me? A bicycle salesman. Go figure! He wasn’t a half bad mechanic either.

Me and Klopp rode up to SD a couple years ago, his Ultra and my tourer both ran like a swiss clock for 2500 miles, in fact I had to borrow a pint of his scremin eagle oil when my gear shift seal sprung a leak! I'll never live that one down! hoser

We ride with a number of HD owners and they are all good folks. They treat us with respect. They have, however, insisted that we ride "drag" in the group; and they pretend not to know us in public places. Other than that, it is all good... We trudge on.

The best way to get respect from a Harley rider is to steal his girl, or her girl... whatever the case may be But in all seriousness... I went on a Flood Run here, and they quit givin me crap after I blew this guy away leavin a stoplight and his girl asked to ride with me after the next stop!

"They treat us with respect" Not trying to be a trouble maker here....but this dumb 'ol hick from TN just can't seem to understand the math in that statement!! you know....AND I DO HAVE MANY HARLEY FRIENDS (and some i even ride with ).....this DOES remind me of a story. I have a lady i work with..and her husband is a DIEHARD Harley dude. She kept bugging me to ride with their Harley group. Finally, she got her own bike...and it was a Yamaha VStar.....so i figured when she asked me to ride again with their Harley group...at least there would be one other non Harley....so...what the heck. i showed up ....she and her husband weren't there (at first). I pulled up on the Valk (figured showing up on the Rune might be a bit overboard....wanted to try and 'ease' in with the group...as it were... ). No one would even acknowledge me or speak to me. Finally, she and her husband showed up. i mentioned the lack of communication going on...and she said something about it might take em' a while to warm up to me........and don't feel bad....it took her quite a while.....even AS PART OF THE GROUP...to get them to warm up to her ON THE VSTAR! THen, it came time to ride on their group ride. And................IT HAPPENED. they told me i could go, BUT.......i would have to ride in the BACK. I thought it was actually kind of funny....but tried to not make a big deal of it. THen, as they got ready to leave...a guy in a truck pulled up and said he was their tail guy...that they always had a truck go along....to help out those who broke down. I thought that seemed even a bit MORE amusing. BUT.............he informed me...that I EVEN NEEDED TO STAY BEHIND HIM AND THE TRUCK. Only Harleys were allowed in front of the truck...in the official group. TOO FUNNY..........but true. I rode with them over to Auburn (only 50 miles). there they stopped at a Hooters (i'm game with that)...and started consuming pitchers of beer (i'm NOT game with that....not while on the bike). When it came time to go....they announced they were riding 5 miles down the road to stop at ....the Harley Dealer. Then it would be a short ride on to a bar. I made up some LAME excuse.....about having to head back home to do some BS...and split from the group. It was amusing to me......but i could see where some would have been offended.... Oh, SHerry and i are NOT TYPICAL VALK FOLKS....by my estimation. Yes, she has multiple tattoos. Yes, we do have multiple Valks and Runes. But, while we like to ride...as all who know us know....we're more about the people and spending fun time with them.....than riding with the people. SURE...we love riding with folks...and riding in general. BUT TO US, it's more about the people....being with them....partying with them....etc. We can ride any time. WE come to Valk events (and Rune events)....to see the people and party...NOT.....repeat NOT...for the ride. AND WE TRAILER TO 99.99% of the events we go to....and have absolutely, positively, ZERO shame in doing so....in fact, wouldn't have it ANY OTHER WAY. So we are NOT your standard Valk folks....but ....again...............could care less that we aren't....and ABSOLUTELY could care less what ANYONE thinks about us not "being standard" or trailering or..........well..........whatever...........

Similar story......a few summers ago I rode to upstate NY from central Florida. Was just made single and since I had the summer off thought I would spend it with my bro. He had just paid cash for his first street bike, springer something H-D. I went for a ride (poker run) with a group of his buddies most on HDs. They told me all of the metric bikes ride in the back and I laughed out loud before I could stop. I asked the old guy who told me why. He said we choose to let the American bikes go first. I said come here and look at this (made in the USA on the back of my standard seat) and asked where does it say that on your Harley. Some of the other riders (including those on Harleys) laughed. I rode next to my brother near the front and nobody said anything, I could not resist a couple of digs though, At the end of the day I had several riders tell me they liked the way the Valk looked and sounded. Most of the guys and gals in the group (73 bikes to be exact) did not really care what I was riding and I had a great time. If you gather enough riders of any bike type you are sure to get an a$$ or two.

Atta boy valkmc - I wouldn't let anyone tell me I had to ride in the back just because of what I ride. If that was a problem I would just ride alone somewhere else. In fact, the thing I enjoy the most when traveling on an extended ride is schmoozing with the locals.

As my age increases my motorcycle size decreases. The Valk is gone but I have the 750 Nighthawk.
Having spent many years listening to Jap Crap, Limey Bikes, and other comments, I long ago decided that I don't give a good GD what anyone thinks of me or my ride. I can ride with others or ride alone, it don't make me no nevermind.
That leaves me free to stay away from the drinking while riding crowd, the "loud pipes Save Lives" crowd, and 'my bike is better than yours and therefore you aint sh** crowd.
It's not what you ride but that you ride. Oh, another thing. The VRCC riders are the best that I've ever seen.

I've had em all. 35 years of wind over the bow. Even an Ariel and a never running Henderson. Just ride. Sheeesh. I had a 56 panhead and if you went on a hundred mile ride you needed a 100 dollar bill and a friend to go get what you needed. Man I loved that bike though. When I get flak from the harley guys I point at the odometer and let em know thats on 2 sets of tires and oil changes. 65k miles of smiles on a 97 tourer. Then tellem "72 % of all Harleys ever registered are still on the road." They'll swell up with pride. Then pop em with "The other 28% made it home."

We read a hilarious story on another forum some time ago by a poster who claimed to ride a VTX. He said that he was riding alone once and stopped at a pancake house along the road and parked next to a beautiful HD Ultra. As he was removing his riding gear a young man came toward the bikes and it was apparent that the HD belonged to him.
This poster says, "Hey, that is a very pretty motorcycle." The HD man immediately began extolling the HD and scorned the other about his "Jap Crap" and allowed as how only HD owners were "real bikers" blah, blah, blah.
The poster related that as this gentleman went on with his diatribe, an young woman dressed in leathers came from the eatery and strolled up behind him. When she heard Mr. HD's monologue, she told him to "shut up with that stupid HD crap."
Turning to the VTX'er, the lady said, "My husband is a dentist, and a decent fellow although you cannot tell by how he is acting now. He just got this bike after briefly riding a metric cruiser; and he suddenly thinks he's 'Macho Man,' or 'Mr. HD'. He doesn't know anything about motorcycles, but thinks he has to act tough." Turning to the man, the lady said "Henry, you apologize to this gentleman right now for your silly insults to some one you don't even know!"
Abashed, the "HD dentist" looked away and mumbled something about being sorry.
More than a little amused, the poster says to them "no harm done, y'all ride safe" and went on into the cafe.
This story may or may not be true, but it is a great story just the same; and we like to think it really happened.
We trudge on.

In my neighborhood there are lots and lots of HD's, never seem to have any issues with them, The snobby ones are the BMW'ers and the Goldwing'ers. The only ones to dig me is my HD friends and that is in fun. And they tend to get quiet when we are rolling. The only time I had a kind of incident. I just got on the e-way and a HD was behind me in the next lane. He kind of sped up to get a head of me, I noticed he kept looking in his mirror. So I figured he wanted to play, I then sped up to get a head of him. This went on a several times, and finally he was a head of me. We were going pretty good, his bike sounded like it was getting to it peak and I was about half throttle but I made it sound like it was getting to the top. He had this HOT babe on the back in her HD designer outfit hanging on. At this point we were kind of side by side, but he was a little a head of me. So as we were rolling I looked over at his lady and she looked back at me. She gave me his arrogant, looking down her nose look and that's all it took. I lost my cool, I went full throttle, as I made them look like they just put it in reverse. As I launched away I looked in my mirror and I could see her looking over his shoulder looking like what just happened. That felt good, I think next time they will think twice before kicking the fence.
Dan
I would like to think that BMW riders are generally a lot more serious or intent on their destination than other riders may be. Kind of like the difference of a recreational bicycle rider and the one with the $3000 bike and its all about the workout.
