Back in the early 1980’s I was working at a nuclear plant south of Detroit Michigan. My old buddy Eric Opland was from the Yuper, may he rest in peace. Eric turned 30 and was worried about not being married. We worked on the ground floor of the office next to some windows. In his attempt to find a wife, Eric would sit and watch the women walk by outside the office. Gazing out the window, he said, “She looks like a nice one.” I replied, “Eric it is customary to ask them out and get to know them before you pick one to marry.” One day a girl walked by and Eric said, “She looks like a nice one.” One of the guys said, “She has a mustache!” Eric replied, “I don’t mind a little mustache as long as she keeps it neatly trimmed!” I never did get up to the UP, but I figure if Eric liked it, it must be a good place. Wish I could make it up there to find out for sure. Not this year.

A bit shorter route, it will take you along the Manistique river, northern most town on Lake Michigan, Soo Locks, a view of the Upper St. Marys river and White fish Bay, Point Iroquois light house and white fish bay, and could take a little side to white fish point. 242 miles total

Gig - I just made plans to attend your 'must do' event this year.  I love the area, just never made your event.  Ground-zero motel was booked so I grabbed a room across the road at the Pleasant Moose Lodge.  I figure I need to be close to all the action!

I'll be cruising the UP all week so I'm looking forward to this event.

See everyone soon!

There has been a cancellation, so call the Evening Star Motel if you want to stay at Ground Zero.
Tell Erin at he desk you would like to have Lynn and Arleen Robson's cancelled room.
 cooldude

Also, please avoid I-75 until well north of Detroit - there is a lot of construction happening.
I can provide pdf map of a scenic alternate route to US23 and M52 by email if you request it by email.

Evelyn Woodhead condensed version:
From Toledo, OH, take I75 north to exit#2 (Summit Street).
From Summit, Take Sterns RD West (~5miles) to Lewis Ave, go north (~10 miles) to M50, go West on M50 to US23 North.

Avoids Monroe, Detroit, skirts most of Ann Arbor.

ALTERNATE: Continue further West on M50 to M52 North (much nicer) - you can still join up with US23 at the northern end of M52...

If any of you fellows is still around on 5 August, a portion of M-32 will be closed for five hours on August 5 as the Air Force practices landing aircraft on roadways designed for cars and trucks in Alpena County MI.

According to the Air Force, the plan is to land four A-10 aircraft and two C-146 aircraft on a closed-off portion of the road near the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center.  On August 5, M-32 will be closed from east of Herron Road to west of King Settlement Road from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Michigan Air National Guard's 127th Wing from Selfridge Air National Guard Base, the Air Force's 355th Wing from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, and the Air Force Special Operations Command from Duke Field, Florida, will be participating.

It's all part of the annual multi-national, large-scale military event, Exercise Northern Strike, hosted by the Michigan National Guard in northern Michigan.

Members of the public are asked to not gather near the landing zones.

Near would be OK, but on the road would be bad.   Grin

The A-10s I get, but I had to look the C-146 up (The C-146A Wolfhound’s primary mission is to provide U.S. Special Operations Command flexible and responsive operational movement of small teams and cargo in support of Theater Special Operations Commands. Airlift missions are conducted by Air Force Special Operations Command aircrews to prepared and semi-prepared airfields around the world.)

There’s all kinds of activities from around camp Grayling when they do this. 20 some years ago four of us from a U.P. trucking company brought 8 armored personnel carriers over from Wisconsin, delivering them miles back on sandy two tracks east of I75, while unloading two F16’s from OHIO air guard  came in and started dropping target bombs and shooting their cannons, they were so close you had to cover your ears or it hurt, great air show for free.

Oh ya those perfectly good running personnel  carriers, yup they were fixing to get blown up

Here's a suggestion for a self-guided ride on Saturday:

From Newberry, head north on M123 17 miles to:
Tahquamenon Falls:

Continue north up M123 to Paradise and then to Whitefish Point. Visit the lighthouse and shipwreck museum along the sandy shores of Lake Superior and tip your toes in the water:

Then, from Paradise, go south along the Curly Lewis Scenic Byway with a smooth, rolling road offering beautiful sights to...

Iroquois Lighthouse:

http://www.explorem123.com/points-of-interest/curley-lewis-memorial-highway/

For lunch, it's hard to beat the view from the deck at Pickles Restaurant, just north of Brimley - outstanding:

Trip Total: 155 miles.
If you skip Whitefish Point, the trip is ~130 miles. A piece of cake.
We did this trip on one tank of gas ($3.09 in Newberry - 3.29 and up most other spots...). You may want to top off at Paradise and Brimley.
South of Paradise, you will enter native reservation land. Tribal police are rumored to be very likely to issue performance citations along Lake Superior Shoreline Road near Bay Mills, please obey the limits in the town of Bay Mills  police

Be sure to sample some fresh caught deep fried whitefish, its delish!

Another suggestion for a self-guided Saturday YOOPER ride is the world famous H-58 road from Gran Marais to Picture Rocks

Its 50 miles from Newberry to Gran Marais. M28 to M77 north. Gran Marais is stunningly beautiful. Check out the beach north of town and the bay to the east.

There is a section of M77 where the crews were installing tar snakes in the road on Tuesday - be warned.

You can get lunch at Gran Marais or Munising.
Lake Superior Brewing in Gran Marais has outdoor seating and good, fresh whitefish:

Pictured Rocks is a must-see, take H58 west:

Good info, Dags, we were talking about how weekend traffic did not seem to be a huge impact anymore because there is always heavy traffic these days with people working remotely...

Are you at Kritters Kamp with the wolf on the sign?

Gig and Lulu--another great time in the Yooper--one of my favorite places.  Great to see everyone.  Enjoyed meeting the Idaho contingent Scott, Yuri and Petra.  Thanks also to Gary (Romeo) for help with our ride planning.

Justin and I trailered back to Cincinnati--much easier than riding, but a bit more costly at 15mpg in the truck.  Hope to see many of you at the DRU.

Made it back to the great state of Tn where H58 would be a side show. 2100 miles not counting my time spent in the Detroit area with Joe/Chong and my son/DIL and granddaughters. Ended up doing a sleepover with both granddaughters, 2 and 4 plus Molly the dog on an air mattress and wouldn’t change that for anything. Ride safe and often.
