I am kind of amazed that a Trident nuclear sub is off the coast of Florida in a practice firing of a possible nuclear missile. Of course it was only a test but one that was surprising never the less. The test launch of what was likely a Trident II submarine-launched ballistic missile sparked chatter of unidentified flying objects on Tuesday, February 9. This footage, shot by Christopher Escobar, shows a light with a tail in the sky off Florida’s southeast coast. https://news.yahoo.com/light-spotted-sky-following-likely-073126953.html

Like Robert said, likely a test of an unarmed Trident II SLBM from one of the Ohio Class SSBN's. Tested every once in a while just to make sure they are still operating within specs.

Happened all the time after an overhaul refit of new missiles etc. Polaris A-3 (but I forget). I was in the off crew that day so I got to watch from the "observation" ship. Off the coast of FL. (Circa 1971-72 I forget)

The Trident 2 SLBM can hit Russia sitting in port (circa ~8000 NM range). East Coast base is Kings Bay NavSta, Brunswick GA, West Coast I think is up towards Bremerton Wa.

My last five years in Strategic Air Command, they made go to all kinda of training on the subject, even though it had nothing to do with my job.
I even got my own personal tour of the first Launch Control Facility ever built (underground).
They would not let me near any buttons though.

Must have been a dud or they missed. I watched most of the impeachment hearing today and there wasn't one exciting moment...... Rams

While not totally germane to this post and sort of related to Jess's tour, on the Patrick Henry (FBM) when we walked aft to take the watch in Engineering space, we passed through he missile compartment.
No big deal. Just 16 nuclear weapons with solid fuel rocket motors sitting in some tubes.
There was no much exercise space so, we had a rowing machine in Middle Level Missile. Rowing right next to a tube, again no big deal.
You could also go forward to the Torpedo Room and place your hand on a very special torpedo. The Mark 45. Again, no big deal.
Oh, we also kept eggs in one of the torpedo tubes. Not enough room in the reefers.

The only submarine I ever got to go inside was the German U-505 in a Chicago Museum in elementary school. They've gotten bigger, but they will always be close quarters. Comparing services however, they're lots bigger than aircraft. But you don't have to live in an airplane for 4 months at a time either. U-505 C-141 (hundreds of hours in them) (another long tube humans sit in) (noisier than hell too)

That would be a cool tour ! Were all the instruments and writing still there ? Those 141’s were loud and cold.

Only till you jumped out........ Rams actually, I was thinking about a C130 Jumped out of them also, honestly can't remember which was noisier. I was just glad to get back "safely" on the ground. Submarines were never in my consideration. This land lubber gets nervous when he can't see dirt close by. Rams
