I can see why he might want to stock up, driving a Hummer.

But he don't need gas any more.

weird how 4 plastic containers could explode.

I have set near 5 gallons inside a vehicle in red plastic gas can but let out the pull out air pressure nipple to allow air flow in a trunk of my car with no issues in 80 degree temps for 8 hours or so.  Maybe he never had pressure relief air outlet open in HOTTER heat for longer times and the gas cans expanded and blew up?

So what caused the fire?

My guess is that the fumes from the excessive amount of gas he was carrying was set off when on his cell phone with his medical marijuana dealer telling him he is lighting his last joint.

Just a guess.

Strange, thought most states didn't allow gas to be pumped into containers not approved by some gov agency????   Did hear where some were fill up water bottles.   Talk about a  Molotov cocktail.

My suspicion is that he filled the cans without removing them from the vehicle and placing them on the ground.  Gas flowing through plastic can generate a significant static charge.  When it dis-charges the spark will ignite the fumes.  You should always place plastic containers on the ground when filling them.

I might suspect that the gas cans were filled to the “brim” leaving no room for expansion. Under ground tank at about 45* versus 80* outside temperatures. Interior vehicle temp 100*+ for who knows how long. Gas vapor rich environment and an electric door lock motor. BOOOM

My thought too.  Place them on the ground and touch the nozzle to the container before pulling the trigger.

I once watched an airplane burn to the ground because of static.  I grd everything.

Jess-BEFORE opening the fuel tank on Any aircraft I fueled We FIRST had to plug in the Ground wire After Makig SURE the fuel truck driver grounded the truck. And a couple times thru out the years I sent trucks back to have faulty ground wires repaired. Some fueling procedures never change for safeties sake.   cooldude I NEVER had a DUH moment while fueling Navy Aircraft. RIDE SAFE.
