I can tell what I did: Get a Bluetooth battery monitor. Install on battery. Install App. This little invisible gadget not only monitors battery voltage, but does a startup battery test and even checks your alternator. It can be set up for alarming you whenever the alt develops its first weakness, and has quite a decent log. I've verified its readings to be true down to 10mV Works best if you have your cell phone mounted on handlebar. -mike-

If you can find a U.S.- made version of one of these, I'd install it: Way back in the day (when our Valks were new), MC Enterprises offered a set of bar-mount gauges in cast aluminum cups. You could buy a voltmeter, oil pressure gauge or a coolant-temp gauge. The gauges themselves were Cyberdyne parts (red displays) and were fairly shallow in terms of depth. I ran a complete set of these with my first I/S and moved the oil pressure/voltmeter to my second Tourer when the original I/S was sold. Along the way, the gauges got swapped for blue...the voltmeter and a fuel-level readout being what's on the bike now. Every now and then, one of those NOS MC gauges shows up on eBay. You can also buy a cup (2 1/16 - 52mm ID) like the one shown here and fit your choice of gauge to it. A voltmeter on one side of the handlebar clamp and coolant temp gauge on the other would be the most useful to add, IMHO.

I like your setup.. does it have a backlight for night? I went on their website and it mentioned it does but it shows a different part # than the one it shows for the meter. since i will be replacing the alternator on my 97 standard is there a way to buy/install a multi meter on my handlebars?

I came across this on youtube ..... I have that. It is an aluminum shell with a $2 commodity-grade clock and thermometer. I love mine, but It might be hard to find a voltmeter to fit one of the sockets and maybe hard to "hide the wire". -Mike
