I would rename them "The Cleveland Atlas".
They are annually the strongest team in the league........................................................
they are at the bottom of the standings holding everyone else up. 2funny

Or maybe "The Cleveland Inferno"? Evil

Hey Meat, throughout history, people have conquered other people in quest for land and treasure. All across the globe. Maybe natives of this land should attempt to conquer the current powerholders. Then they can call their lacrosse teams the Limeys, the Krouts, and the Dutchman. I was wondering when are we going to change the names of the majority of names of the lakes up here in Michigan and Minnesota and Wisconsin? Do you actually think changing the names of sports teams will assuage the feelings of these conquered people? I, for one do not feel the slightest bit guilty about naming our sports hero’s and beautiful lakes afternoon these groups. In most cases it is meant to be a tribute. If they don’t understand that, it’s on them, not me. I’m truly sorry you feel the need to feel guilty, because whether you want to be or not, you aren’t.

So there are 26 states with names of Native Indigenous American origin and with meaning behind each of them.

Lets leave them alone please.

Unless you want to rename Illinois Murderland, California Lalaland and New Jersey Taxyourassland.  I'm good with those.

All Army helicopters are named for tribes.  They are cool names.  Leave them alone too.

This is what comes to mind with the name Guardians.

You get a guardian appointed when you are no longer competent to play with matches.  Grin

Naming a team after them is actually out of respect.  Now they have to worry about offending guardians?  I expect animals to rise up in protest... lions and tigers and bears, oh my!  Not to mention the poor dolphins.  And what about patriots?

It's all so ridiculous.

I don't get offended at Notre Dame's "Fighting Irish."  Wanna have a go at it?  LOL.

You read way too much into my post. I personally don’t care what they are called. It’s up to them. A post was made that Indians didn’t have a problem with it. That was, and is incorrect. (I’m truly sorry you don’t understand that)

Maybe they were named the Indians out of respect. (I doubt that though) Their logo certainly wasn’t respectful. If the Havasu baseball team changed their name from the “Heat” to the “Meat” out of respect for me, I doubt I’d find it respectful. I’d probably ask them to change it back. If for years they ignored my requests, I’d doubt their intentions were respectful to begin with.  Smiley

Maybe they were named the Indians out of respect. (I doubt that though) ...

From the wikipedia article linked by the Serk:

Quote
Louis Francis Sockalexis (October 24, 1871 – December 24, 1913), nicknamed The Deerfoot of the Diamond, was an American baseball player. Sockalexis played professional baseball in the National League for three seasons, spending his entire career (1897-1899) as an outfielder for the Cleveland Spiders.
...
When the Cleveland Naps changed their name to the Indians in 1915, the franchise reportedly did so to honor Sockalexis.

The text of Serk's post reads, "Such sad rampant ignorance... "  He was indeed so accurate.

The Indians and Chief Wahoo

“Baseball writers at the time voted on a new name, choosing the Indians. While some suggest it was a way to honor Sockalexis, who died two years prior, that’s been disputed over the years. He played for the Cleveland Spiders for just three years and was released from his contract for his conduct. Plus, the Spiders were not associated with the current team. It’s more likely the writers were influenced by the success of the Boston Braves, who just won the World Series.”

It’s laughable that the team would name themselves after a player they got rid of because of his alcohol problems. Ignorance indeed.

Many did. For years. Maybe decades.

This is exactly the problem.  Many, not all.  Is many a majority?  Minority? 2 out of 1,000,000?  We need to quit catering to the few that get their panties in a wad, while ignoring the wishes of the Majority.  Many think biden, pelosi, waters, schumer, finestein, et al should be in prison or hanging from a rope.  In that case I wish your way of thinking worked.

You can't please everyone, but your goal should be to make as many happy as possible while having minimal impact on the other side.  It would also help if they picked REAL ISSUES to bitch about, like the quality of our children's education and rampant government spending.

DOn't ask us to get rid of all Native American People references around here
State name  - Kansas - for "people of the South Wind"
Wyandotte County (my county of residence) - named for an indigenous people locally
Olathe (Willow's City ) - I believe that has an indigenous people reference
Shawnee  - street, city , county of Topeka (state capital)

and I'm sure that's only the easy ones I'm familiar with. There are many others in Kansas / Missouri. I'm pretty sure most of them were to honor the indigenous people.

You may want to pause your laughter long enough to reread.  "They" didn't get rid of him.  It's also not clear or even believed by many that he was released because of alcohol problems.  Babe Ruth certainly wasn't.

He got drunk and jumped out of a second story hotel room. Consequently breaking his ankle. This resulted in poor fielding on his part. Interestingly his batting was improved. They got rid of him. Directly because of his alcohol issues ? No. But if he didn’t have the alcohol problems he wouldn’t have jumped out of the room and broken his leg. The laughable part is that you would believe 3 years later they would rename the team the Indians to honor him.  coolsmiley

He played two more seasons after that incident.  It was eighteen years later, two years after his death, that the Naps changed their name to Indians.

You said, "It’s laughable that the team would name themselves after a player they got rid of because of his alcohol problems." and then in a subsequent post said, "Directly because of his alcohol issues ? No."  That's more than a bit inconsistent.

Also you said in that earlier post, "It’s laughable that the team would name themselves after a player they got rid of because of his alcohol problems." and then said in the later post, "The laughable part is that you would believe 3 years later they would rename the team the Indians to honor him."  It's more than a little bit inconsistent.  One might say contradictory.

Let's try harder to be accurate and consistent when we are driven to argue for the sake of arguing.

Yep, you are probably right. Cleveland changed their name to honor a player who was an alcoholic, who was denigrated by the sports writers who voted on the “Indians” name, who played 3 seasons for them on what was considered the worst team in baseball at the time. Sounds like all very valid reasons.

I'm going to walk away from this discussion as it seems to serve no purpose with your mind.  You made multiple false statements.  You changed your "reasons" more than once and you are simply not interested in considering anything but what you've already made up your mind to based upon one journalist's opinion some 100 years after the event.

I try very hard, but they won't ever shut up.  Making sh!t up daily.  In competition for higher lunacy than the last guy.

Either neurosis or psychosis, or committed insurrectionists.

Or all of the above.

And yet nobody is squashing their first amendment rights.  They get front and center coverage all day every day.

This just in on Cleveland Guardians:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hope_Memorial_Bridge

Guardians" isn't used as a generic term.  Its the name of famous landmarks in Cleveland.

One of the eight 1932 Guardians of Traffic sculptures on the Hope Memorial Bridge.

OK, but what does it have to do with baseball?

And it was still caving to PC horsehockey woke.

And all of the Guardians of Traffic are white dudes.  Ohh Noooo.   Grin

My wife is part Native American and she thinks it sucks.
Are Native Americans not good enough to have sports teams named after them?
