The Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has declared a "Geomagnetic Storm Watch" this weekend which could make Halloween extra spooky.

The wave of solar energy headed for Earth could dazzle the night sky on Halloween night with auroras for people to spectate across the Northeast, to the upper Midwest, and over the state of Washington.

"A G3 (Strong) geomagnetic storm watch has been issued for October 30. In response to the Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) from Region 2887 associated with the X1 flare, a G2 (Moderate) watch is in effect for October 31," NOAA said in a statement.

I have only seen two or three such storms.  Two when I lived in Michigan and one when I lived in SC.  The  SC one was not as vivid as the ones I saw in MI.  But still, it was there.

I had my 550 ZUMO destroyed 3 times by solar storms.  It was replaced by Garmin ea time until they discontinued it.  I had to pay the last time.  It would also have to be rebooted (power cycled - pull the cover and the battery) if I drove past the USAF's satellite control "golf ball" on Smokey Hill rd in East Aurora.  I learned to shut it off before I got close.  Even installed an external momentary off sw in the battery power circuit for that.  The 550 was really sensitive to EMFs.  The 665 has never been hurt by it but even so I don't turn it on during known solar emission events.  It does sometimes need a reboot - haven't determined what if any outside event caused it.
