Bigger schools have security guards right?  why not metal detectors to pass thru daily upon entering the schools?

Cookie, next time you are in the area of a large high school, ride around it and count the doors. Our HS has almost 30 sets of doors. Plus, you can not lock them due to fire regulations. We have a hard time keeping drugs and guns out of jails and prisons, do you really think we can keep them out of schools?

To reduce these issues,  we need the proper reactions to threats from; students, parents, school staff, AND police. Obviously this situation was lacking in several of those areas.

Im at a middle school in Florida. There are no hallways. All classrooms open to the outdoors. There is a fence around the place but it is easy to get over/around/through. We are on the edge of the poor part of town. Hear sirens often and last year gun shots a few times. I worked in a maximum security prison for 12 years and felt safer than I do here.

As to this specific shooting.

We know the kid killed 4 students and wounded others.

We're told the motive was due to bullying.

While it may certainly seem that the parents are "on the run" it may seem like that because:

They actively helped their son with the acquisition of the weapon and are guilty of abetting and are indeed on the run...

or

Their son just took their gun, shot up a school, and the world knows where they live and the media does too and they could be getting death threats and are be accosted at their own home.

I'd get lost too for a while till I can get to deal with some things.

Fact is we can make all kinds of assumptions. We don't really know the story here except for the deaths, wounded, and who the shooter is, and the media will bend and twist things to suit a narrative.

There is no excuse for killing unarmed innocent people. Kid will pay. I would support him paying with his life. But due process must be served.

The parents were caught several days ago and are in police custody now.

parents pleaded not guilty as well, good luck with that one.

Our K-12 school on our doors we could get OUT of locked doors from the inside but NOT IN from the outside being locked.  Just have ONE set of doors entering the building for all in the morning and I know lots of schools do not allow students to leave the building during school hours.  Although,  we all know how easy it would be for anyone to leave the school, but not might be able to re-enter being locked from the inside unable to enter from the outside.

Even our small school last few years they have security cameras and all students enter one set of doors in the morning.  AFTER say 8:05 a.m. when classes start,  the entrance doors are locked and have to use the buzzer at the door and the office staff talks to you thru the intercom asking you who you are and why needing in.

Seems pretty simple to me.
