Bushmaster, Stag Arms ( left hand model available ),Colt, DPMS, Lewis Machine and Tool, Rock River, Ruger, Double Eagle, S&W, Sig is about to release an AR-15 as well. All are very high quality rifles. You are looking at $800 to near $2000, just depends on what you want. We had some DPMS M-4 clones fpr $799.99. They are all sold now but we may get more. Boss man is going to the SHOT Show in Vegas this weekend, hard to tell what he will come home with!!  Best thing about an AR is, once you have a lower receiver you can change uppers and make about any gun you want. .223, .204 Ruger, 7.62 X 39, 6.8 SPC, and several more. Neat thing is, you can mail order an upper receiver to your home, no ATF forms or background checks for an upper. Californina and New York may be different.

If ya' wanna get intimately familiar with the weapon, get a quality stripped lower, lower parts kit, and a good upper from a company like Model 1 Sales - http://www.model1sales.com/ and build your own... Can save a few bucks too, and will end up with the exact rifle you want...

I went this route several years ago, and had great results.  I started with an 80% lower and machined it myself though.  Fun project.

As a whole, I'm partial to Rock River Arms rifles.  But there are many quality AR-15's on the market.

Love this "US Property" lower:  http://www.ar15sales.com/rra2.htm

If you can get your hands on an M4 clone like was mentioned above, you may want to check into that depending on what you need it for. I've used both, and besides hunting, I'd rather have the M4.

I have never owned one because it seems EVERYONE else does and I get to play w/'em plenty!

From my experience with AR's that others have owned....GO WITH A GAS PISTON ! !

I think it is well worth the investment from a reliability and ease of maintenance stand point.
When I do finally own one of my own it will ONLY be a gas piston set up.

I’ve been thinking hard about a gas-piston stag arms lefty. Does anyone know if the gas-piston guns still use the same lower and can have standard uppers of various calibers installed on them? Same question about the southpaw version? I think I’m the only guy left in the US who hasn’t bought an AR yet. Too bad they don’t make one which drops it’s used brass out the front like the new .308 Keltec bull-pup. That would be great for reloaders.

My dad and I are also left handed. We have had no trouble shooting the AR-15.

As stated by others, any name brand quality AR15 will serve you well, but consider a few things.

Do you want a target rifle or a carry rifle? With either get the heaviest barrel available, improves accuracy, stay away from slim, light weight barrels.

Carry? M4 carbine, with the m4 profile barrel (heavy). Lightest M4 is Bushmasters Carbon Fiber upper and lower model. Excellent shooter.
Target? 20 to 24 inch heavy barrel, with machined flutes. (reduce weight and stiffen barrel). A bipod greatly helps in shooting a target model.

Get a flat top, quad rail model for maximum flexibility, sights, scopes, lights. An optional carry handle can be attached, I would not bother with it.

Piston or direct gas? either works very well if maintained correctly. 99.9% of all firefights end before firing 450 rounds. Which negates much of the reason for piston types.

Adjustable or fixed stock - either can be fitted on either type. Your preference, adjustable makes it easy for short armed folks to shoot, and can compensate for jackets and clothing also.

If buying used make sure the AR15 does not contain ANY M16 internal parts. ATF regulation violation, makes you liable for arrest. Does not matter who did it as it is a possession violation, so do not be the possessor.

Acquire some excellent quality magazines, some 20 and 30 round, minimum 6, for hunting 5 round mags are available and a block is available for the 20 to reduce it to 5.

Personal preferences Carbon Fiber M4 Bushmaster (or Professional Ord.), S&W M4 Tactical, Colt H-Bar with bipod, and for cheap practice S&W AR15-22 (dedicated 22 long rifle).

Good luck on you quest. Pete.
