Grits and Groceries

Beautiful day in South Carolina today... me and Henry met up with some other riders, including
a Red and White rider I didn't know about that lives near by (gave him a SCVRCC shirt  )...

We met out at a country crossroads where a really cool restaurant called "Grits and Groceries" is
located. Naturally, I had grits. A big slab of fried grits with gravy and some country ham. And a bowl
of thick spicy chicken based soup. And a slab of pecan pie with ice cream.

Forgot to take any pictures until after it was just me and Henry again... this old Grocery (sign says
1897 - 1947) is at another crossroads 10 or 15 miles from Grits and Groceries...

How did they know they would be in business exactly 50 years when they had the sign painted?

Did the guy painting the sign say to himself "Boy, these guys are screwed, they are going to lose it all in 47" ?

I've been going by there for 20 years and nothing has changed. My guess is that the grocery is an
icon in that community and that was painted on there at one time by whoever keeps the building up...
There's a gravel road leading off to a big old farmhouse across the road... maybe Stricklands still live there?

Now I'll have to ask around

Fried grits with gravy...Woo Hoo!

A friend of mine - Hoover Alexander - who owns Hoover's restaurants in the Austin area introduced me to grits with shrimp.  He said it was a recipe he got from relatives in South Carolina and served it as a breakfast dish.  Oh boy, I couldn't get enough...

They always have shrimp and grits at Grits and Groceries... I've gotten it so often that I force myself
to get something else just not to be in a rut. The gravy on my slab of fried grits yesterday must be
the same gravy they put on the shrimp and grits - there was a shrimp mixed in there with the
pieces of country ham. I didn't complain  ...

That's GRITS. 

Grits is coarsely ground corn cooked to a porridge-like consistency.

"quick" ain't grits, and grits don't come from the microwave. A guy in my Sons of Confederate Veteran's
camp makes the most awesome yellow grits I know of using 100 year old milling equipment. That's
the kind of grits I've been eating at home for the last ten years or so. I rue the day he quits making
them.

I put cheese in my grits sometimes, though some purists think that's a sin. Grits goes with bacon and
eggs, salmon oooked right sitting on a bed of grits is really good, shrimp and grits... grits makes good stuff
better.
