I rebuilt a good number of clutch slave cylinders this year and noticed that the Clutch Slave Push Rod in the 1997 is substantially shorter than those from other years.

Does anyone know exactly why?

I ran into the same (opposite?  Wink ) kind of thing when I rebuilt the clutch slave cylinder
on my '97... not only did I get new rebuild parts from partzilla, I also
ordered a pinwall slave cylinder.

Here's a cut-and-paste from a post I made then...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Checkout this fiche picture for a 97 clutch, some bikes apparently
have 15 (mine), some have 16. When they pulled the ebay slave
cylinder it stuck in the piston instead of sticking in the clutch
so I have it... 16 is a lot shorter than 15... obviously some bikes
have the short one... I checked four or five other year's/bikes fiche
pages for the clutch, none had the short one... I wonder what
Valkyrie uses the short one?

Were parts 16 and 10 available at one time.

Looks like 10 and 16 are listed for 97 only. The parts picture shows 9 with 15 and 10 with 16 for all years but only lists 10 and 16 for 97 although no longer available.

Additionally, in my OEM Service Manual from 1997, the parts photos show the shorter push rod.
My manuals that cover multiple years show the longer push rod.

whatever it is, it's good to be knowledgeable of these nuances. More people should post them.

That makes me wonder about something with my trike. When going from 1st to 2nd it wants to grind gears a bit unless I do it slowly. Doesn't do it with any other gear change regardless of the speed of change. I replaced the slave with new shortly after I got it a year ago and used the same pushrod, it looks like there's a major difference in length so doubt that's the issue. The clutch is solid, new SS line with new fluid, new slave, and when going from neutral to 1st I always get a hard clunk. It has 70k on it.

This is the short one that came with my pinwall slave cylinder...

I have a 97. It has the long push rod...

And this is what is in my 97, obviously the long one.

The most expensive things you will purchase, are those things you would not have needed if you had listened and obeyed.
