Oh DEFINITELY no Valkyrie! I've already noted that, when parked the Valk gets WAY more attention, looks, people wanting to ask what it is, etc..... The 'wing gets about as much attention as a Honda Accord. And that's okay... (And why I'll never part with my Standard... Smiley )

I finally bit the bullet and called Hartco. That OEM seat just isn't gonna work for the long haul. This'll be the third seat I've bought from them in 22 years... Spendy, but what isn't these days?

Hartco doesn't make one for the V1800. The one I had on my standard was the best saddle I've had in 50 years of riding.

I looked through my notes, I paid $629 for the driver and passenger seats with a backrest in 2018...

Just gave $1298 for the Gold Wing equivalent of the same...

www.wingstuff.com for goodies. They also make risers, shims really, for the bars. Rose my bar ends up 2". Best thing I added to mine. Cheap too.

So what are you riding these days? Still have the Valkyrie?

Bought a 05 wing last March. I love it. Still have my tourer. Actually rode it to my 1st InZane last year. Finally  Grin .  I try and switch off bikes every week or so. When I ride the wing, I want to sell the Valk. When I ride the Valk, I fall in love again.

Serk,  did I miss what year goldwing you bought?  Not sure it matters but heard the radio speakers are better in later model years vs. say 2005 and earlier?

It's a 2008.... The speakers/sound system is okay, not great but I usually use Bluetooth helmet speakers anyway. I might upgrade the speakers somewhere way down the line, but it's not high on the priority list right now...

One thing that WAS high on the priority list however was Mick-O Pegs. The $80 delivered deal I got off eBay turns out to have been from a member of this very organization who recognized my handle vis-a-vis my eBay user name. *Waves to Gnarly* Thanks!

They finally came today. Can't tell for sure which model they are, the only stamping is AF, and Mick-O says they've never had a model AF. I sent them pictures to see if they could ascertain what model they actually are, but regardless.... They're on my bike, and they're comfy! And for $80 delivered I stole 'em! Smiley

I couldn't find someone to take my pic, so used a zoomed in image from one of my security cams, this is me in the Ob-GYN position with the pegs deployed:

The parts for LED headlights, turn signals, running lights, brake lights should be here Friday or Saturday, so looks like I'll be tinkering on the electrical side of the bike over the weekend...

The Mick O's look like they fit you to a T.   cooldude

But do they have no rubber?  Or grippy knurling?

Besides just siting there, I use grippy rubber Hwy pegs to do a little of the steering by pushing and moving aorund and I would not like to slip off (like in a lean).   I've done that before, and it hurt both my leg/ankle and my nice boot.

All metal, but deeply knurled.... They grip deep into boots and hold your feet where you plant 'em...

This pic is the unfinished and the finishes ones to give an idea of the knurling:

Yes, good deal on the MOP.

The very first pegs were for the GL1500 wing and were simply A models.  You might have those.

Current mounting blocks are marked with the model and the side (left or right).  Look again and they are probably AL and AR.  The arms are all interchangeable.  MOP, with exception of D arms, are designed to have the pegs angled up, not parallel to the ground.  Some of the arms have a twist in them so the pivot plane is vertical.  Others, like yours, do not have a twist and are designed to have the mounting blocks mounted at an angle so the pegs move out as well as down.

Not just a Texas thing anymore.

They are putting the finishing touches on a Buc-ee’s about 10 miles from my house in Richmond on I-75. Had my first experience with the beaver on the return trip from Orlando this week. There are two Buc-ee’s on I-75 in Georgia and my traveling companion insisted we stop, even though we didn’t need gas. He has a daughter in Texas and a stop at Buc-ee’s is now mandatory ever time he goes.

He is also very fond of their bathrooms (me too now), large and clean. But the real draw for him is the brisket sandwich’s. I had to take his word for it as I couldn’t have any bread Cry . I’m already looking forward to my first brisket sandwich, plus I can get some gas too. If it’s like the one in Georgia, they will have non ethanol gas and I won’t have to drive to Lexington to get fuel for my yard equipment.

Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good... Got a response from Mick-O, turns out the $80 delivered set I got are indeed model KA, which is exactly the best model for my build...

Woot!

Now I've got boxes of things I need to install on the bike but my will to tinker got up and ran away. Oh well, it'll come back soon... Hopefully...

Slowly adding/removing/adjusting things to dial her in for me, getting closer.

Larger Clearview screen installed, Hartco custom seat installed that moves me up and back, got rid of that squirrely low-traction rounded tire and replaced it with a much better, higher traction more squared motorcycle tire (Went with a Yokohama AVID ENVigor ZPS Run Flat), added some appropriate emblems, etc...

Still need to get the high beams replaced with LED (Changing out the high beam bulbs is a bit of a chore), replace my turn signal module (That strange problem wasn't corrected by replacing the relay, so I've ordered the entire module, expensive but meh.) and a few other farkles that are on back order (Harness to allow the fog lights and high beams to be on simultaneously, Bluetooth module for the audio to connect my phone audio to it, light kit for the trunk, few other small things)

But, mostly ready for the first road trip, which is coming up quickly next week!

Much better positioning for my carcass with the HartCo and Clearview:

(Although handlebar risers might be on the future to do list)

Much more stable with the larger squared off motorcycle tire installed:
(Closest shop to me I've found that'll install a squared off motorcycle tire is 30 miles away, but they've done good work at a fair price, so I think I'll keep using 'em for other stuff if I'm not turning the wrench myself)

Nice 100ish mile ride on country back roads yesterday with Serk Jr. breaking in his new Mommy-Approved riding jacket and general shake-down run for our upcoming trips. It's funny, I'm guessing it's the high gas prices, but so many drivers, especially in larger pickups, were consistently going 10-20 MPH UNDER the speed limit.... Ugh, got frustrating, luckily the jet-turbine like acceleration on the 'Wing made getting around 'em easy once the opportunity to do so presented itself...

...if you can't laugh at yourself, then who can you laugh at?

I could be jealous, mine is just the way I bought it minus the floorboards and heel/ toe shifter. But I may be closer to design criteria size wise than you are! Would like to upgrade my lighting though. You will probably see me checking out your mods in Hattiesburg.

That seat fits you much better (and knees off the fairing).   cooldude

Shoulda givus a pic on the mic a pegs.

It looks like you could flat foot while on the center stand.  Grin

Does look like the bars could go up 2 inches (no pull back necessary though).  I wonder if they make simple spacers for rise that require no changes to hoses or cables?   The complexity/difficulty of getting handlebar rise on the new Valkyrie put that bike off my list, all by itself.

Three questions, if you don't mind.

Is the Yokohama AVID ENVigor ZPS Run Flat run flat really designed for motorcycles?

What time mileage to you expect to get with this tire?

Any know issues with this tire and a trailer hitch installed?

Thanks.

Interesting on the final drive, kinda reminds me of the Super Mario mod for Valkyries. Not sure I'd be ready to make that leap, but something I'll keep an eye on for sure...

No, the Yokohama wasn't specifically designed for motorcycle usage, I was being pedantic, since it's ON a motorcycle, it is now, technically, a motorcycle tire... Wink

I've been reading of folks getting in the 25,000 mile range on these on a Gold Wing, possibly more.

No idea how it would impact pulling a trailer, unfortunately not something I've researched but if I see anything about that I'll be sure to relay it to you...

I made the switch when my Valkyrie Standard (Tourer) was my only bike. Took about 1000 miles to fully get used to and now I vastly prefer it in general. The MC specific tire the 'Wing came with had a good 3-4000 miles of meat left on it, but I didn't want to get too used to it, it felt squirrely and unstable to me so I made the upgrade sooner rather that waiting...

(That and with s few longer trips coming up in the next few months didn't want to deal with a tire needing replaced somewhere during said trips.)

I never pulled a trailer, but I can see only good from a car tire with a trailer.  Improved contact patch for braking is a big one.

There is a bit of a learning curve to riding on a car tire. (and all car tires are not equal on bikes)

2 months, and I never looked back.  And I lean hard and drag boards all the time.

I have my tires replaced by a local motorcycle shop in Batesburg-Leesville.  They have always done good work, never had an issue (and they are not brand specific).

So, I think I will talk with them and discuss the tire.  I am also on the GL1800Riders forum and have heard a lot about going to the dark side.

Don't be surprised if they refuse to mount one for you.

All businesses great and small worry about personal liability.  Never mind that no one has ever provided one actual accident/injuries solely attributed to a car tire on a motorcycle.  At one shop, I agreed to write up a hold harmless agreement on the spot, and did.  Then they mounted it.  Now I have a guy who will do them for me.  But no local dealer will do it.

If you have a good relationship with them, I might suggest you just casually bring up car tires on bikes (in general) to get a reading on their attitude, rather than showing your hand you are considering one for your bike.  That way, when you bring them the wheel and tell them it's for a trailer (not a bike), they won't be suspicious about it.

Thanks Jess,  I will sort of ask them that way.  And I would/do take them the bike.  They charge $35 to pull the wheel and replace the tire (I usually bring my own).

I have tried to give them the opportunity to provide the tire and make a few extra bucks but their tire prices are at least $30 to $50 over what I can get it for.

Makes me feel a little guilty and sort makes me want to give them a big tip but, I have not..

Yeah, I'll be surprised if your favorite shop will mount it for you. Most of the shops I've talked to went straight to "Flaming Death, You'll Put Your Eye Out Kid!" and refused to do it...

Even after I pointed out I have three motorcycles, and ALL of my maintenance business will be going to the garage that does this for me, none of the religiously anti-Dark Side shops would budge.

(And funny how things change, a decade or so ago when I first went Dark Side, my local Honda shop had no issues mounting it for me. Now that same dealership won't touch any motorcycle over 10 years old, period... )

Like the Serk, I bought my GL1800 with a MC tire on it and it felt squirrely from the get go (been double dark on all my other bikes before that).  When the MC tire was in need of being replaced, I went to a CT and noticed an immediate and significant improvement.  Last year on the way home from the Dragon Wier in Slade KY, I drove from Lexington KY to Detroit in the driving rain and high winds pulling a trailer.  I doubt I would have made it if the bike still had a MC tire on it.

I did the same thing with tires (when I used a dealer), even if they charged more to put on a tire I brought, it was still cheaper than what they would sell me the same tire for.  (I think dealers are locked into certain supply chain and parts per their franchise agreements).

I got a new front put on the bike at my one man shop a few months back, and doubled up the asking for the tip.  He's a good guy, and does it while I wait (cause I have no way to get home, but walk 35 miles).

Yup they make tapered little shims to put under the bars. $40 and it lifted my grips up 2". Best thing Ive done. Only took 15 min to install, if that.

Thanks for the tip Fudgie, could only find shims to raise it 1.5", but went ahead and ordered a pair, anything will help...

Also had an order from ElectricalConnection come in today, so now can have my high beams and fog lights on at the same time, Bluetooth feed into the stereo from my phone, gas cap tether, and a nice LED light inside the trunk...

Holy cow, I was skeptical that two small pieces of metal could make a material difference, but indeed it does!

Got them installed yesterday and took a brief ride, MUCH better...

...I wonder if it's safe to stack two sets of shims to raise it even more..... Hmmm...

Well, not so scientific, but with the one set on now, turn the bars lock to lock and study your cable and hose tightness.

Do those install flat or lengthwise?  How would you run two lengthwise?

Hoses are ran differently on the wing vs valk. 2 bolts hold each bar to the triple tree. Shim is tappered so the tall end goes at the bottom. So serk could prob stack them.

They do make a huge diff. I measured mine before install and after. Raised my ends up 2". I bet you could stack them, just may need longer bolts. For the price its worth a try.

So the guy at the shop called me up to tell me the Gold Wing would be ready this afternoon.

And.... asked if I knew about the peanuts.

*Blink*Blink*

That's not usually the kind of query one gets from the motorcycle shop that's been tasked with changing your air filter.

I told him Er, no? And I just bought the bike a month ago.

So evidently it's a very good thing I elected to go ahead and replace the air filter. This is what they took out:

So theory is some critter was nesting in there. (Which also could be the source of my weird turn signal issue, since replacing the turn signal control cluster and the turn signal relay didn't fix it, I might dig deeper into it some day and see what I can find.)

Anyone who keeps any kind of seed, grain, nuts or like food in the same place as his vehicles will have a similar experience.

I once fired up a bike that had the seed and the rodent in the air cleaner.  He quick fried and it's hard to describe the strong odor such a tiny rodent can make when mixed with high heat.
