ONLY one encounter 1 foot away was close enough for me big adult male but was in a red SUV at the time.  VERY scary especially when bison snorted at us and my 8 year old screamed VERY loudly. I thought for sure the bison in South Dakota was going to ram the horn right the the passenger rear door.

Wish I got it on video though.

I was in a small group ride out in the sticks and farms of VA, and we come around the bend, and there is a 7 foot tall Black Angus bull chewing cud in the middle of the narrow road.  The biggest land mammal I've ever seen outside a zoo, by far.  I told everyone, no damn horns or loud pipes (cause I'm up front, and will get the charge).   So we just faced off.  The bull seemed unconcerned, but he wasn't moving either.  Finally, the leader, who had grown up on a farm out there said... follow me, nice and easy.  And we all putted right by Mr bull single file, with no fuss or bother.  Just down the street was a big farm.  Later the leader told us at lunch, that the bull was almost certainly a show animal and family pet of the big farm.

Dude!

I looked for images of Black Angus bulls, and could find plenty of big ones, but no 7 foot ones.  He towered over us.

Wife and I were on the Valk, geez maybe 12 years ago now, out in the Black Hills.
Went through Custer State Park on the Wildlife loop. Rolled into a traffic jam and 100+ head of bison. Had one of those things charge and stop short. Real short. Hooves under the bike short. Pretty exciting.  Just havin fun I guess.

Not Bison related, we don't have then in NYS. We do have Whitetails.
Leaned over in a left turn this little crotch horn decided to run out of the grapes and across the road right in front me. I got around behind when he decided to change direction and go back to where he came form. I couldn't do a thing, when he turned around I was right there. He jumped and went over the front fender and missed the wind screen by no more than a few inches.
As soon as I got home I grabbed the whiskey bottle and had a shot or three while we watched sun set.

Back in 1970 right back from scenic southeast Asia I went cross country on the Triumph. A moose was in front of me on the curve in Yellowstone so I went on a short trials run thru the woods and made my way back to the road eventually.

On that same trip for some stupid reason I decided to chase a Moose across a valley. I wanted a closer look. We both survived.

I really watch for deer, when in high pop deer country.  And when tooling along anywhere where the woods are right next to the road.

It is most disconcerting when you pull into a break/stop with riding friends, and one of them says... did you see all those deer right next to the road?   And I didn't see a freaking thing.

I did see a deer coming down a steep slope and jump clear over the rider ahead of me.  And he didn't see it.  Well who looks straight up?

Lots of deer out here.  Muleys - bigger than whitetails but not as skittish.  They just mosey onto the road, generally don't wait until you get there than run in front of you like whitetails.  After I killed those 2 bucks in '01 4 miles from home I watch the shoulders and of course the road all the time.  Run extra bright lights, often let cages run interference if can't use the lights.  More likely to be on the road near cover but they travel in herds and often don't care much on the cover.

sometimes deer collisions cannot be avoided they jump out with only 1-2 seconds to react.  All insurance companies say just slow down ASAP in a straight line do NOT swerve can cause greater danger to oneself.  I agree on that on a cycle since swerving much at all will surely be very bad at hwy. speeds, but with a cage I will swerve (and brake super hard) if no other traffic around as long as still on the road.

I only hit 1 deer (well 2 but no damage grazed it) with my new truck 5 years ago now and swerved to near avoid both of them in heavy downpouring rain at night with fog in rural country.  If not have swerved, woulda been a head on collision vs. just a graze doing damage to right front qtr. panel mostly 3K damage vs. 6K or more if head on collision.

dozens of close calls on cycle as well but so far only mere feet away from raccoons and possums at night.
