Serk, if it works out for you to make it up into or through  BC, please know that you can contact me, Gordonv,  or just post on the BC board and you'll get a response to specific questions, or just general suggestions if you wish. The stricter border crossings have been lifted. I believe effective April 1 you just have to be vaccinated, and register using the ArriveCan app. Testing is no longer required. There are other fantastic mountainous regions in the South to ride as well as the Rockies if you're not carrying on to the North.

Sounds good! Any chance with the border relaxing some of ya'll might be at Billings too?

Taking what you said, and some input from others I've been tweaking the route a bit, does this look a little saner? Still pretty crazy, I know averaging 400 miles a day for 10 days is a slog, but that's also part of the adventure...

Two possibilities, the Banff route:

Or shave a few hundred miles (or those kill a meter or whatever ya'll call those things Wink ) off and stick south of Banff and smaller areas (From Street view looks not quite as majestic as Banff but still pretty darn nice scenery!)

Yes, a little saner. If you want to get up to the Rockies I guess you'll want the quickest way up there to save time. If you decide to leave that for another ride another time and you just want to pop up into Canada for a couple days, then I'd suggest hitting the Kootenay region...mountains, lakes, windy roads, wildlife, not a ton of traffic, neat old towns with lots of history...the whole shebang. Maybe cut East from Cutbank MT on #2 and then up through Northern ID on 2 to 95 to Creston BC. Highway 3A to Kootenay Lake ferry is amazing, then take "the longest free ferry ride in North America" across the lake and then 3 to Kaslo (see the "largest intact original Paddlewheeler in the world"); 31A to New Denver (listed as a top MC road in the country) then down along Slocan Lake through the gorgeous Valhalla Provincial Park to Nelson; then South across the border and keep inland until you get past Greater Seattle towards your desired PCH route. Definitely steer clear of Portland the way back as well...there's some nice riding East of there. Again, once you have a feel for what you'd like to accomplish when the time comes, can always help out with other suggestions if you'd like.

Re: Inzane...would be nice and did think about it for a bit, but travelling up North to spend time with our 3 granddaughters trumped hanging out with a bunch of cool guys and gals on Valks and assorted Hondas, etc in Billings this June. Should be a few Canucks there though, as well as a few of our Valhalla brothers & sisters from WA. Sounds like you're gonna have a fantastic 2-3 week ride, whichever route you decide upon cooldude

As for your Canadian routes, we could get on the phone/zoom together and try to make some suggestions and recommendations of sites and locations you want to see/visit.

You're a Techie, I'm sure you know how to connect to our PC and see what we see, we can show you some places, point out some roads, and try to fit them together to make a nice ride. Wanting to hit and tick off those States makes it a different ride than going to some destinations.

The same for you as all others who maybe interested in crossing over the border, we all here would be more than happy to point out routes to take and give you of our time to plan your trip.

Definitely... It's all a tradeoff... I know I could easily spend a year riding that area and not see it all.... The goal is to find the best route while crossing that area in just a day or so....

It's a tradeoff... a BIG one....Once I'm retired? Different story entirely!!!!

But for this trip, the goal is across the border, through some pretty areas, maybe one night in Canada so Serk Jr can say "I spent a night out of the USA!" and back in...

I know that's doing a major disservice to the area, but also recognizing the realities of a working man's time off.... Sadly.... =\

Quick and dirty? Then cross over onto Hwy 3, ride through some mountains, and exit back in WA at the Okanagon crossing at Osoyoos Hwy 97 to I 2 over to Port Angeles, or continue towards Vancouver, cross at Abbotsford in WA and along the coast to Oak harbor and then Port Angeles.

Where to spend the night in Canada? Maybe only at the end of a 1 or 2 day ride from Billings. Need to see how far. Osoyoos is a tourist trap, booked the year before. We stay at Grand Forks, a nice 6 hr ride from Vancouver. I know from Billings to Spokane is a nice days ride.

One more bit of paper to grab in advance if you're planning on getting up there...

Canada requires vehicle liability insurance...Your liability insurance IS good there....your PROOF of liability insurance is NOT. Call your insurance agent and get a card for that (should be free, think it's called a "yellow card"). Anyway, they won't ask for this at the border, but if you're involved in any sort of traffic interaction (including tickets) and don't have the proper card, you are subject to impound until you can get it (at the time I was up there, it was a physical copy you had to get as well, and they're ain't no "overnight" across that border).

Good point. One thing I always thought was off, was the $ you pay for insurance for you vehicles. Wow, I would like to be in the USA.

Then I got more details from posts here. Seems it's from $0 - ?? In BC, our basic min liability is $250K, maybe, I don't really know, since I drive with $2M on my cars, and $3M on my motorcycle. For others? No, for me, in case I have an accident and injure my passenger(s).

Because it's a big city, or because it's Portland?

Yes - especially if you're carrying.
