As many of ya'll know, the local Renaissance Festival is a big deal for me and my kids. Kali's gone every year since she was born and had gotten even more into it the last few years. Of course this year she couldn't make it being an Army Soldier stationed in California and all.

Saturday morning my group, the Queen's Own Highlanders were having our annual awards and promotions get together (Last Saturday of the season) when yet another plague doctor asked for a group photo with us. Happens all the time, the faire'd only been open 30 minutes and this was the third group photo request already that day.

So this was how that group photo came out:

Edit to add - And someone got a pic of said Plague Doctor before they asked for a group photo with our group too:

Heh yeah, I leaned on a picnic table, then one of my fellow Highlanders came to me and "hugged" me/helped steady me until the initial surprise wore off...

She did get a bit of a tongue lashing that her old man is too old to be doing this stuff to!

Was VERY happy to have what we could of her, but it was a very short "awhile". Had to drop her back off at the airport this morning, she's already back in Uncle Sam's loving embrace as of this afternoon...

That was a very nice and thoughtful surprise.  There was a lot of planning and conspiring to pull that off.  Well done!

Brian when we talked in Hattiesburg, you had said Kali was struggling with language school, (I can't imagine not struggling to learn Farsi on an accelated schedule), I was just wondering how things are going now?

She has decided language school is not the right fit for her and has started the process to get into a different MOS. She thinks she wants to get into mental health and therapy. I wasn't thrilled with her decision, but it's her decision and I respect it.

Evidently the process to change one's MOS is rather long and winding, so no clue when/if/how it will happen.

Thanks for the update.  I wish her well and success no matter what she decides.  I'm surprised with her interest in sky diving she didn't go for something in Army Aviation.

Almost forgot! Another nice thing about this weekend regarding Kali - Scarborough Faire always has a big Memorial Day parade, with a keynote speaker, etc...

The keynote speaker this year was the Army's first ever E10, Command sergeant major
William Gainey (Now retired):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Gainey

We get to faire several hours before it opens and tailgate in the parking lot. (You know you're at Faire when you hear someone say "Glenlivet is a very nice breakfast Scotch).

While we were out there, hours early, Command sergeant major Gainey came to join us and chat casually.

Kali had quite a bit of his time and attention, he gave her a lot of pointers, and he also gave her his personal business card with an offer for her to reach out personally to him if she needs anything.

He did add the caveat, that he wouldn't help her get through a block, he'd help her figure out how to go around it.

He also took the time to talk to both myself and the spousal unit, thanking us for encouraging our daughter to serve.

Very good resource for a young private to keep in their back pocket!

I'll probably add a few more bits from this past magical weekend if ya'll will humor me...

Here's a short video of Kali and her sister Kaelynn dancing at faire this past weekend. The fae wings KK is wearing were hand made by her big sister...

https://rumble.com/v171e18-kali-and-kaelynn-dancing-at-scarborough-renaissance-festival.html

Edit to add - As I mentioned above our faire makes a big deal of Memorial Day... That day veterans (Active service counts) wear a yellow sash to denote their position.

Kali, having grown up at this faire, has always venerated those with the yellow sash.

Seeing her with one was yet another extremely moving moment for this daddy.
