My '98 standard headlight looks like a big, juicy bug exploded INSIDE the lens. A week ago I needed a new bulb (no low beam) and decided to clean the inside of the lens. Took what looks like a retainer ring off and figured the lens and plastic would come apart. NOPE! As I was afraid I'd break something, and didn't want to be bikeless, I just put it back together. Anyone have experience with taking this apart?

I have NO idea how, or what got in there, but it looks horrible.

Thanks in advance!

I do not believe it will come apart
Wash it out and rinse. Dry it well. I think I have one in stock.

Honestly, just switch the whole POS for an LED headlight...

The "retainer ring" is more a *beauty ring* that members have transplanted to their Led headlight. The lens is welded to the parabolic shell on the Valk's semi-sealed headlight.

I guess I'll have to research prices, etc...  Any good plug and play ones that won't cost me an arm and a leg?

A "Daymaker" led headlight and a Valkyrie specific adapter... There's a fellow
on here who makes adapters...

Here's a plug and play kit. Eagle Lights come with a lifetime warranty. It'll be the last headlight you'll ever buy, and 5 times brighter than stock!

I'd have gone with the Eagle setup myself if it wasn't for something that happened at last year's Vintage Motorcycle Days.

Was walking the lower part of the swap meet area soon after the early morning demo ride registration proceedings, when I happened to come across a complete spotlight assembly off what I think was an FLHRP. Including a nice OEM pair of LED spots.

Just by themselves, the black beauty rings fetch what I paid for the entire package. When we got back to the car to store the newfound treasure I hopped on the auction site to find a matching headlight. Long story short: For about $130 I got all three lights plus a bunch of other parts for use on future projects.

These are the blacked-out (not silver metallic) versions. They blend in very well with the rest of the bike. I'd bought Josh's adapter several years prior and it finally got put to use.

If you aren't running a CB radio on the bike, most Daymaker-pattern lights are plug-and-play. If you are...they generate a fair amount of RF hash. A bit of searching this section of the site will find a thread I started on how to eliminate the RFI problem with them.

Thanks for the link. I really didn't want to spend $200.00+ but it's looking like the way to go. Probably a dumb question, do they adjust the same as OEM?

i just put a new headlight in my 99 tourer from SLK lights, couple things needed to be switched from old assembly but pretty easy and at $99 was a  direct replacement. Definite improvement over the sylvania bulb that i has put in previously.

Got mine off Amazon. Just go to Amazon and type in SLK lights daymaker, and scroll down a little and you will find it. installation pretty easy just reuse 1 bracket . They make black and chrome. Pictures for installation on website.

I second the Eagle Lights... High Beam went out. Emailed them and they asked me to try a couple of easy things to see if it could be resolved, it wasn't and they simply sent me a new light.

It's possible that your mirror backing has separated in the headlight unit.  If that's the case, no amount of cleaning is gonna fix it.  You can buy a new OEM headlight unit (part #33120-MBH-671) for about $80.

about 6 months before passing,  BigBF had to take apart my 98 tourer OEM headlight and had one heck of a time re-installing it with all the wires, etc. and with bigger hands and all,  was quite the workout after a few hours of piddling with it.  Just glad he got er dun for I was not much help, as usual...

Can you post a pic of the fitment of the SLK please?  I've not heard of SLK but interested at the $99 price point and no mount / modification needed.

ETA:
Nevermind, it looks like SLK has one year warranty whereas Eagle is Lifetime.  I went ahead and purchased from Eagle and at this time they have them on sale for $219.  They also are offering a promo code today "JULY20" for an additional 20% off so total of $176 so that's what I went with.

Thanks for the info. It's definitely odd. Like clear glue or something. A little bigger than a golf ball and oval shaped.  Huh?

On a ham radio forum I frequent, there's a discussion of these lights causing RFI.

And then you get the guy in-thread who fails to see the utility of a properly installed and aimed LED projector light. Says his antiquated halogens are "good enough".

Maybe as daytime running lights, but from my experience anyone who's ever been aboard a Daymaker-equipped bike (Harley or otherwise) isn't in a hurry to switch back.

Plus 1! Then give me hollar' as I got an extra Sylvania Silverstar that I purchased on closeout.  Smiley The thing with LED is having a spare unit on the cheap in your saddle bag. Just not a fan of the LED white light. The SS is a bright white enough in its own right compared to the stock yellar' bulbs. On a note, a slight adjustment upward on the headlight bucket helps a lot. I rode 7 yrs. on second shift with this setup in deer laden territory. I had my 1st. SS for 65,000 mi. on three different bikes. As far as halogen drain vs LED, we charge @ 75 amps. not 375 watts like on the Honda Shadow variants with pretty much same setup.
