Hidden Motives...

There's no way of which I'm aware anyway to prove this, but it is something for which I've noticed more than strong coincidence. That is, the role our subconscious thought can play in our actions and conscious thinking. Let me offer a recent example...

I'd informed my hosts that I wanted to get an early start for my departure, and that six o'clock the following morning was my target time. That, of course, was to take full advantage of the cooler early morning temperatures. They'd wanted to ride with me part of the way, so that became the time around which we all made our plans.

I was really surprised when I was awakened by a soft knock upon the bedroom door! As my eyelids slowly at first pried themselves apart, and as actual non-dream thoughts began to creep forward and dominate, I realized it was daylight already... and that during those first brief moments of consciousness, I didn't have a clue what was going on! I mumbled an acknowledgement and assured the knocker I'd be right out...

It was after 7am, and my hosts were becoming concerned... Dang! I'm normally awake so regularly before the first glimmers of daybreak, that I almost never use an alarm clock. It was one of those truly rare shockers for this normally early riser to fathom. I'd clearly overslept, but why was that, and why this particular morning? I later figured it was simply that I didn't really want to leave just yet.

My hosts were already in departure mode, so I rushed through the morning rituals and hurriedly finished loading our girl. KSU came in due course, and we were off... finally. We stopped for fuel and a bit of gabbing, then we rode on a few more miles to 'Pork Bellies', a cafe with a most inviting name! We weren't really 'late' at all, it's just that we all knew what awaited us later in the day...

I'd speculated during one of our patio therapy sessions that angels would be quite comfortable during their early mornings, but the devil himself would feel right at home by midafternoon! It’s hard for a guy with my background to come to terms with the weather and remarkable temperature swings out there in the 'Treasure Valley' near Boise, ID, but... It is what it is...

My friends casually devoured more traditional breakfasts, while I reluctantly stuck with my usual disciplined ration of bacon and sausage... only proteins are ingested for the first meal when I'll be riding. The grub was delicious, and more friendly conversation freely accompanied this unusual meal. Once back outside... tire-kicking at the bikes, then...eventually time to head out... No one seemed to be in any hurry at all...

Yuri & Petra have lived out there for several years now, so they are quite familiar with the roads and best rides available. Yuri led us on one of his favorite eastward treks that would leave this easy rider well positioned for a visit to Craters of The Moon NP that afternoon or the following morning...

It was a delightful ride throughout our time together. Petra's bike had developed an unusual 'squeaking noise', though, so frequent stops were made to tinker, adjust, and tweak this 'n that, but that persistent noise never left for good... Those stops always included lots of gab and other forms of shade indulgence, as the temperature continued its inexorable rise.

Soon enough, the ride had to be 'abbreviated' for them, unfortunately, and the sad chore of farewell felt particularly difficult this time. Yuri observed how we'd all seemed to be dragging our feet throughout the day, because none of us wanted this time together to end... Several wonderful days had been spent with two exceptionally fine folks... and I was simply not eager to ride on...

An unavoidable aspect of a 'solitary life', however, and one with which I have often struggled to find a way to make it at least a bit more digestible if indeed not more palatable... Oh well, this sad experience is nothing more than a necessary prelude for the next time we reunite to share wind, memories, and another sensational slice of life itself... together...

Been there myself but, time marches on for all of us and some things ya just gotta do.   Very similar to "The Call of the Wild" I'd suggest.   Ride on Brother, Ride on!

Whatever it is, it's better in the wind.

My Dear Friend,

Hidden Motives? Most definitely, when it was time for us to depart and you were still sleeping and Petra was against me knocking on your door, motherly instinct I guess, she said you would wake when you were ready. Well against my wife's judgement I still woke you.
I would chalk up your longer sleep cycle to the extended patio therapy sessions we had over those wonderful days, and yes we did not want you to leave, so in there I think there was a hidden motive from Petra to let you sleep longer.
When we stopped in Carey, we did not want to say goodbye, it had been such a wonderful time and yes we all dragged our feet as long as we could, however the inevitable time had to come.
As for the squeak on Petra's bike, well after we parted ways and we took the most definite wrong road home, construction for unknown amount of miles with lots of mud, not your type of dirt road that Dusty choses.
I spend the next day taking her bike apart until I found the offending squeak. It took several more days of tinkering to get it corrected, however it was fixed.
We look forward to the next patio therapy sessions with you, it was a grand time.
Ride safe my friend, and until the next time...

Shocked Sleeping in?  Are you slipping?  Sometimes more than an alarm is needed, like the wafting aroma of coffee and bacon.

I was honored to meet Yuri, Petra and the Idaho gang by chance in Colorado a couple summers back.  Good, approachable folks.  I also regretted heading back off in an opposite direction.

Sounds like a great visit.  Smiley
...odd how that twinge of pain can catch us by surprise (for me, sometimes not until later) when a period of especially outstanding enjoyment reaches it's unavoidable conclusion. Some of my fondest memories make me wonder if I sometimes take the present for granted. I suspect that I do...  coolsmiley

Ron,

More than anything, it is indeed the 'Call of the Wild'! As for riding on: I did; I am; I shall... Not sure how much longer I might want to continue doing all of this, however... After all, I've only been at it a couple of decades, so it's just too soon to tell... I don't want to rush to judgement!

Yuri,

I'm not surprised at all that you found the root cause of Petra's bike malady and took care of it. Among your many varied skills, those involving wrenches also impressed this tech-less rider! Again, thank you and your dearly beloved for your most gracious hospitality and for the wonderful time you showed this humble wanderer. Yes indeed... 'until the next time!'...

Seth,

A lot closer to the truth of my condition than you might think! Oh well, we did partake in due course; although, the awakening itself was done the old-fashioned way... Yes, there is a rather impressive cast of characters out there! A couple I've met due to age-related ailments of our girl, others for more usual reasons... Still, I felt the same twinges of regret when parting company with all of them! The thought of return engagements does ease the feelings we experience at such times... Looking forward to tackling another 'Effie Burger' again sometime, too...

Ross,

No doubt all of us do! I've found that writing of my experiences aids me in recalling great experiences, especially many of the details, better down the road when I'm inclined to reflect and ponder... I suppose you're also experiencing that, as well...

DDT

All,

The GWRRA has ceased operations... The times are a changing, and the normal ebbs and flows of anything man-made are unfolding before us... as they always and unavoidably do.

The VRCC, too, has a 'Life-span' and an 'end-date'... I do hope that day is an exceptionally long way off! In the meantime, I'd like to suggest we all be thinking of the 'inevitable' and about what that might mean to each of us...

For starters, I'm simply raising awareness of the obvious. I'm also asking that we all keep an open mind and be receptive to opportunities and suggestions to prolong the life of this wonderful 'electronic clubhouse'. As revenue from advertising shrinks and attendance at IZ dwindles, the financial strain will of course increase! This alone will force some tough choices... How important to each of us is this...?

Bruce, I enjoy reading your stories but I am somewhat bewildered by your repeated references to Kansas State University.  I didn't realize you had a connection with this part of the country.   Smiley

Carl,

No, I have no actual connection to that neck of the woods, but... Maybe those repeated references are some sort of subconscious urge to balance the scales (a hidden motive?). A couple of years back I did buy a Kansas Jayhawker sweatshirt at a stop along the way, because it had turned cold, that was available, and I very much needed to add another layer! Glad you enjoy my stories... I hope to post lots more!

DDT

P.S. I used to enjoy reading your stories, too... Haven't seen one in quite a spell, however... Do you still write?
