Beyond my better judgement, and contrary to what I have, and would recommend, I made a chiropractic appointment.  Been having pinpoint neck pain that just won't go away for about 2 months now and it's limiting range of motion most notable when driving.  I stretch out my neck all day long, have tried hot and cold and event CDB rub (smells like Vicks vapo).  No relief.  Moderate, but not complete relief with NSAIDS.  Then, a knot, right between the shoulder blades appeared a couple weeks ago.  Not painful and no limited range of motion, just a tightness that comes and goes.

I've seen the damage that chiropractic can do, so I'm going to be cautious.  Probably x-rays to start and then an adjustment.  I've had these before, but not for almost 30 years.  I know folks who swore by their chiropractor only to wind up having to have surgery later than sooner, when sooner would have been better.  Pretty sure will be set up with series of appts. but we'll see how it goes.  If there's no relief pretty soon, I'll stop and seek further treatment,  Maybe a neurologist and let him do that voodoo that he do so well.........

it depends on what your problem is as to the right person/treatment to get it where you can move / live better. I have a herniated disc right above my pelvis, and my back muscles parallel to the backbone are incredibly tight  trying to make up for the disc. The chiros have this traction table which does wonders for me - I'm using it as high as it goes into my back to stretch those muscles out, going to the Chiropractic College twice a week for treatments. it worked far better / faster than PT did. That's not to say everything is perfect - I still take 2000 mg Tylenol (sometimes, like today - 3000mg), I still can get neuropathy in my right thigh, and my pain is an "always" thing - always there. I would love to have one of those traction tables here at home.

I hear great things about inversion.  Seen those Teeter commercials and saw one at a gym I used to go to, but never tried it.   I tried hanging with my arms at the gym, but I'm not strong enough to hold myself up with my hands long enough for it to do anything, yet.  Been in the gym for a little more than a year now.  Down 70lbs and no real injuries, until these annoying back things.  Hopefully this will do the trick.  Some folks swear by chiropractic.  I've seen the down side so I just have to be cautious.

As a physiologist (person who studies how the body works and why), I develop the techniques that physicians use.

I worked years as a military and university researcher in environmental physiology, which is how the body functions in the heat and cold, at altitude and underwater, breathing many mixtures of gases, doing different forms and intensities of exercise, and all kinds of injuries.

It's important to understand why things work. If you don't understand, then you can't think for yourself, and are prone to repeat the mistakes of your teachers, who were repeating what they learned from other people who were repeating what they heard, maybe not correctly, and without thinking, and endlessly on.

You can quickly learn and use what I spent my life researching so that you can be happy, free of pain, and able to do all you love that is good. Scroll down for free summary articles and fix it right now. Click the CLASS page to come learn more with me, and get certified through the Academy of Functional Exercise Medicine (AFEM).

I develop techniques that make top athletes go higher, faster, farther. We fix pain, even injuries you may have been told you have to live with. For more about my work, click the Adventure Research page. Credentials and bio are on the Bio page. Some rare photos of early work are also here.

What Postural Therapy Can Do for You

Your pain exists because your body is out of balance. It could be the result of an old injury, hours of sitting behind a desk or the wheel of a car, repetitive use injuries from exercise or work, or simply a postural dysfunction such as scoliosis. All of these can knock your body out of perfect alignment, causing pain, sleeping troubles, and limitations.

The Egoscue name comes from its founder, Pete Egoscue, a pioneer in postural therapy who designed his systematic Method as a way to understand and heal his own pain. (purple heart Nam) Read more about Pete’s remarkable journey—it’s worthwhile and insightful.  An anatomical physiologist since 1978, his exercise therapy program is based on the belief that most pain is the result of postural imbalances, and that the human body can heal itself if postural alignment is restored.

As the Father of Postural Therapy, Pete is acclaimed worldwide for treating chronic musculoskeletal pain attributed to overuse, injury, accidents, aging, and other conditions.

I've used techniques from both above to fix my neck and back problems, after a few doctors said surgery was the only cure.   those doctors were taught one narrow way that make big $$$$ and that is all they know and think everything else are fake treatments.

I'd let a chiropractor (or other medico) massage and stretch me, but no f'ing way I would ever allow my neck to be torque cracked like I've seen done.  That just looks downright dangerous.

There are better neck exercises (than others), look them up.  I do them when walking.

You might get some Flexoril (muscle relaxer), but that's only ever supposed to be 2-3wk short term.  My doc gave that to me for a probable brachial plexus pinched nerve shoulder-arm tingling issue, and it did nothing for me (later resolved on it's own).  But holy sh!it did I have a wonderful night's sleep every time I took it (even half pills).  Little groggy for a half hr after waking though.

These things usually resolve on their own for me as well, but not this time.  Usually 3-4 day, a week max.  . Sad

There's different methods of chiro adjustments. Some will twist you like a pretzel, pushing and pulling while doing so. Stay away from them. Others, like the type I've used for decades, don't do that. They use pressure, pushing in the right spot or area, mine often will adjust in that manner then use a good massage machine. I recently had a painful spot between the shoulder blades a bit to the left of the spine. He laid me down on his table which lowers to a horizontal position, then began to just run his fingers down the spine. As he went down it was "yup, there's one" and further down repeated it two more times. He then started pushing with some instant pressure in certain spots and in one spot I literally felt it move. Thankfully the sharp pain was gone, and over the next two days inflamation pain disappeared comepletely.

I've used one of these for years for neck and back pain and it works for me.  Not instant relief but used over time it makes a big difference.

Chiro care is just like any other situation, find the right one who fits your comfort level. Yeah it’s difficult and time consuming but once you do it reduces the stress of office visits and the work the chiropractor can do.

X-rays are beneficial but MRI is a whole different thing especially in the right hands, it tells the whole story.

I’ve been to chiropractic care for decades…off and on for the most part. I have bad cervical and lumbar discs.

Most recently I posted regarding my low back L4/5/S1 issues which have persisted for years along with neck pain and issues.

For the most part chiropractic care is mostly temporary but can be effective however it’s dependent on how you treat the body itself.

A couple years ago I over exerted my left arm and continued to use it normally. Eventually it came back to bite me. The arm would loose sensation and became weak to the point lifting a gallon of milk was almost impossible with my left hand….I’m a natural righty….The ulnar nerve (funny bone nerve in the elbow) had issues. Chiro care would help but eventually I grew impatient and stopped going, I thought I was wasting everyone’s time.

Went to ortho, got MRI and he gave me some shots in the arm and hand between middle and ring fingers then did months of rehab which had little results.

Many months before my lumbar issue flared up again I began seeing the chiro again for my neck and slowly but surely I’ve regained some strength in my left arm and the “falling asleep” funny bone tingles have almost disappeared. I’m still not 100% but better. The ulnar nerve (funny bone nerve) runs from the neck down (I think C3/4) to the shoulder and into the arm and fingers.

I also got a gel pad for the elbow for when I drive since I like having my left arm on the window sill for expended miles and it did help wearing it daily while sitting around and working. To this day I cannot sit with my elbow supporting weight. I think the ulnar nerve may need to be addressed by ortho.

My lumbar issue has been nagging at me now almost a month, but last Friday (a week ago today) my chiropractor gave me a manual lumbar manipulation. I got some relief in the moment but not until Sunday afternoon did I realize I felt better. Monday I was able to move normally and Tuesday I went backwards, Wednesday was better than Tuesday and last night I was more steps back with an appointment for today.

I’ve tried inversion, I couldn’t get comfortable or relaxed and believe it or not it caused some acid reflux but maybe that’s a different issue altogether.

Chiropractic care isn’t the end all treatment for sever issues but can be highly beneficial for those minor or mid level issues. It depends on the patient and doctor. Your comfor level with the doctor relates to the comfort level of your adjustment and how relaxed you are relates to how well your body allows the doctor to adjust you. The actuator can do wonders along with ultrasound and muscle stimulation.

I have used a chiropractor for years.  It is in finding the right one.  I only use a hands on method.  If they use a machine manipulator , leave.  Wife goes for care and is now a believer.

I go once a month. If I skip a month, I can feel it. He uses a gun and doesn't man handle you.
