I was busy dealing with the EMTs and State Police.  What a cluster F that is!  So many things to do, and nothing seems to be working as it should, but it worked out.

As someone that worked EMS for 30 years I know exactly what you're talking about.

Every accident scene is chaotic as crap.

The goal is to take care of the patient and try to make the chaos as orderly as possible.

It might not have felt like it at the time, but it sounds to me like you did a stand up job of helping Gig to survive his crash.

Re. not wearing a helmet, I've been told by so many non-wearers that "it's so restrictive." My answer has always been "it's not as restrictive as a wheelchair for the rest of your life" assuming one survives.

Back when I was an active member of GWRRA, a group was on a lunch ride and the driveway was a rather steep incline up to the parking lot. About halfway up, one of the riders hadn't geared down and the bike stalled which caused him to drop the bike. His corider was thrown off and hit her head on an adjacent stone wall lining the sides of the driveway. It knocker her out cold and split her helmet in half. A bruised knee and elbow were the only injuries she sustained, but imagine what would have happened if she wasn't wearing a helmet.

It Was an epic night, Jig commented often on how much fun we were having.  I hope he heals up quickly as the rides won't be the same without him there.

Jeaneane and I are truly saddened by this. Gig is such a great guy who truly loves life and lives to its fullest. Hopefully his inner strength will help him in his recovery. The pictures of his condition are stunning to say the least. We’ll be praying hard for gods intervention in the decisions made by the doctors as well as guiding their hands. Teresa, if there’s anything at all we can do to help you in anyway during this time, please do not hesitate. We’ll be in touch.

I choose most of the time to wear a head bucket but before we get too sanctimonious about wearing or not wearing keep in mind that the same comments could be made by cagers about motorcycle riding in general.  Many times a helmeted rider has died in a fender bender from which a cage driver would've walked away.

Yes Carl, I agree, I don't want to preach, but  just think it is the thing to do. It should be the riders choice, not a law.

Thanks Don but I didn't do anything I wouldn't expect any of our members to do for any rider that has a mishap.  I'm just glad I saw him and stopped as he would not have lasted long without medical attention.

Update:  I got a call from Theresa, they took Gig down to the OR to install rib plates on his 3 cracked ribs, and found that he had a 4th rib displaced and tucked under his wing bone. Anyway, she said that the procedure went well and the forth rib popped back in place during the procedure.  It is my understanding that they will be taking him back to the OR on Friday to repair the damage to his ankle and close that nasty wound he has.  Please pray that he doesn't develop an infection in that area as he could lose his foot or part of his leg if he does and they can't control it.

Theresa was unable to log into the board, and Lori and Carl will straighten that out for her.  She wants to thank you all for your thoughts and prayers and offers of assistance. It's funny, as I was leave a PM for Carl to help Theresa with her log in info, Lori called me offering to talk to Theresa concerning dealing with the whole closed head injury thing.  I understand Carl has had 2.

Is this a great club, or what?

No doubt, but I wish people would focus on Gig, Theresa, Ryan, and Gig's sister Lisa.  I'm fine, I did what was needed, and hope Gig recovers.  They are going to need a lot of support, for a long time.  I'm confident our membership will step up.

I talked to Theresa this morning, They took Gig to the OR to repair his ankle, he is looking at an 8 to 12 hour surgery.  I hope Theresa takes this time to go to the motel, shower and get some sleep.

Ryan had a set back with the bike, so Kraig Delker is driving back to Columbus to get the bike, take it too his house, and we'll go pick it up.  Kraig is a good man.  Thanks Kraig.

I just talked to Theresa, Gig is still in surgery, and it is going as expected, They have finished the hardware installation, and the plastic surgery team is working on the skin graft to close the wound.  I guess this takes some time as they have to attach blood vessels and such to the graft.

Kraig picked up the bike and is taking it to his place.  Thanks Kraig!

Thank you Joe, I didn't really want to post those pictures as they are very graphic, but they each tell a 1000 words. We all know and accept the risks associated with riding motorcycles so I figured if any one could handle it, this group could.  Both Kraig and I have borrowed your motto of "that's what we do, ride around helping people".

By the way Jig's ICU room has a big curtain in it that I laugh at everytime I go in there.  I can't wait for him to wake up so we can laugh about it together.

SNIP

Is this a great club, or what?

Rib Plate?   Is this something new within the last few years?   Just curious.
When I crashed I had five broken ribs, they were free floating, broke off on both ends of the rib cage.   This rib plate sounds like a great idea.   When ya lean back on a couch pillow and can watch the entire left side of your chest move forward, a rib plate might have been nice to have.

Different situations I'm sure, was just thinking about how such an plate might have help my recovery.   One thing I learned and know from my own crash, things will never be as good as they used to be.   14 broken bones, busted clavicle, busted scapula, a shattered wrist, a concussion with brain bleed and more road rash that I care to ever think about again.  Rehab is good but, it's never gonna be the same.   Thankfully, I was wearing a helmet that took the majority of the blow or, I wouldn't be here to type this.

IMHO, seat belts and motorcycle rider's helmet should be an adult's option to use but if, one chooses to not wear them, who you gonna blame............    There's only two kinds of drivers/riders out there, those that have crashed and those who will soon enough.

I sincerely wish and hope for Gig's full recovery and will keep him in my thoughts and prayers.

Good news!  Theresa texted me last night that Gig's surgery went well, the ortho team is pleased with the results.  The plastic surgery comes in every 20 minutes and checks on the graft. If no infection develops they will do a bone graft in 2-3 months.

They did a cervical MI which showed no new damage so they removed the collar.  Making progress!

I called Theresa this morning and she is trying to catch the docs during their rounds. She did manage to get some sleep, which was bally needed.

I'm so glad to hear of the improvements and steps forward. Knowing there is still a long road to full recovery we all need to continue to keep our friend Gig and Sweet Miss LuLu in our thoughts and prayers.

Four things among the many that I look forward to every year at the Fall Color Ride are Gig. LuLu.
Griswold the well mannered and gentle dog. And Skinhead... I've always known he was a good stand up guy. Now lots of other people know as well. Thank you sir for being there and being you!!

I myself have been involved very recently in an "accident" (icallhorseshitonthetermaccident) that I will post about in the days to come. I haven't yet because most importantly we should all keep Gig on the top of the list of things to think and pray on. And I can't remember a time in my life when I was so upset and maddernshit about anything.....

Gig has suffered some minor setbacks, I hope they are temporary, when he was first in the ICU, they told me things would get worse before they got better.  Last night Theresa said his pupils were reactive, but no longer equal, and he wasn't moving his one arm or legs when commanded.  The neurology team did another CAT scan, and it showed no changes.  They are going to do an MRI today.  They changed the dressing on his head, and the nurse said she noticed movement in his arm and leg, but it was not in response to command.  Gig's sister Lisa is there with Theresa as is Ryan.  I told her that since they only allow 2 visitors in the ICU, she should go back to the hotel, shower, and get some sleep in a real bed before she burns herself out.  Keep the prayers coming, and I'll continue the updates as they are available.

Ok.  Gig's pupils are not equal, but reactive.  The neurology team did a CAT scan and saw no changes.  They have him scheduled for a MRI, but I'm not sure when.  Gig's sister and Ryan have left Columbus, but Theresa is still hanging in there.  She did go to Lisa's motel room today to shower, use the spa, and get some sleep.  She sounded much better when I talked to her tonight.  But... She has to leave Wednesday, Ryan is supposed to be back in Columbus Wednesday.  Theresa is going to need a place to stay in Columbus when she returns, be it a motel, Airbnb, or what have you.  Many folks have said they want to help out, so i was wondering if any one has access to accommodations for her in Columbus.  Right now I'm not sure when she needs them, and she would probably need to bring the dog, Griswald, with her.  I'm looking for suggestions here.  No need to clutter up this post with responses, but if you have a suggestion, call me @ two 48-7two9-one one 69.  If anyone has a college student at OSU that can sublet an apartment or is willing to let T and Gris crash at their place, let me know.  Not much else to report, but we need to find T some accommodations.  Thanks all and good night.

I don’t have a place in Columbus, but I would be willing to cover a nights lodging for them. Continued prayers from Colorado.  cooldude

As some of you may remember our charity at Inzane In Athens, OH a few years ago was the Brain Injury Association of Ohio.  We gave them a hefty sum of support at the end of the week!!  I reached out to them this morning and they are working on what they can do to help!  It is ALWAYS a good thing to support charities as you NEVER know what help you may need, and they help so many!!!!!!  They are always there!!
