It’s been 79 years since that day and what it meant to the world.

The cost of freedom lies with each soldier who died serving their country along with all the innocent men, women and children, young and old who couldn’t get out of the way of the destruction.

The Allies who may not have seen eye to eye at all times but worked together and got the job done. We need more of this today to fight the forces who are working against us and the world.

May all their souls rest in peace.

Had and old neighbor in Florida, Louie, that was part of the landing. He said everybody on that landing craft were "gung-ho but scared shitless" which I can understand. Told me about 15 seconds into hitting the sand he was running up the beach and a bullet tore through his pants between his legs. Said he was scared to look, then saw where the hole was and "I realized I was about 1" from being a queen the rest of my life." His wife Mary, who was a real trip herself, used to joke about it. She said if that German had been a better shot it would have saved her a lot of pain at childbirth.

Louie always wanted to live to 100, but died just a few days before that birthday. Mary was 95 at the time & followed him just a couple years later. I always had to laugh at Louie, he wouldn't talk about his time in either France or Italy if Mary was nearby. Kinda makes you wonder just what kind of action he did see in those places.  2funny

It was almost exactly 5 years ago I took a certain elder spawn of mine to the National D-Day memorial while attending the prior Roanoke Inzane and that experience helped inspire her to do what she's now doing.....

(For those in the area or going to Inzane, I HIGHLY recommend going to the National D-Day Memorial btw, it's only 30ish miles outside Roanoke!)

I agree.  Remember them all.

And, I just noted, June 6, 1944 was also a Tuesday as well.  Makes today even more special.

I am named after a close friend of my fathers who died that day piloting a Higgins boat onto Normandy.

Touching interview with a Higgins boat pilot

"I'm not a hero, just a survivor"

"There is a cemetery up in France at Normandy that overlooks Omaha Beach, in that cemetery are 9400 kids in the ground." "Those are my heroes"
