What parts do you keep around because you know you'll need them at some point?

I'm about to replace my camshaft end caps with the shinier chrome ones. The new caps didn't come with the gaskets and in my experience, you pretty much always have to replace the gasket too when it comes to something like this.

Googling for gaskets brought me to stuff like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/155260006040?hash=item242637ae98:g:IogAAOSwncxjdJnf&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA4AEpaiZ%2BC7cr%2F3qKQboBanQI7QjckPG9B39I%2FfTuzvOAAmjcSqRp0APDnO5P2QSlLJkTJEZc5XYS0rCuKKK0zjfaqdQ9F3VcdKABKxiv04dS5bMUMdN1BOygmzCc1RV5HT7fW%2Fwumus7IpdhqoU4LiPF3Vg4Y7hPUWf7zS9qyXLi483inzsFb3gkuhIRqQ2mmDLBsaJ7ce6Z6Dh6lH67E9dgVsxaWgUTDQnZXxWEneCaHo4dYcFUIdOqP%2BynqZBbtD%2FbbeSq4DahnVhkMoQ0lmGcyNnIEyE74JX8VV2LK6nR%7Ctkp%3ABFBMypfLh6Zi, which gave me an unsettling thought -- that stuff isn't going to be around forever. After a while, the Valk riders will use up all the parts -- like gaskets -- that wear out.

So what's the endgame? I personally intend to keep my Valk running and in shape for another half-century at least. what other stuff -- like gaskets -- is smart to keep around?

Hang out here and pay attention to posts where people
are talking about what's "not available" in the fiche...

I got a real nice used radiator off a low mileage
bike from Pinwall (ebay) for cheap.

I saw a brand new rear fender section painted right
for my bike at the swap meet at last year's InZane
and bought that.

I have several mufflers.

I have numerous new parts I've bought over the
years when I was making an order for parts I
needed at the time.

I have a used low mileage alternator.

I have a final drive I refurbished with good 1500
wing parts...

I think a bunch of us have spare parts on the shelf...

The Gaskets are reusable behind the Cam Covers, the gaskets keep out water and dirt from the cam end seals. There is no oil or liquid of any kind behind the cover. Take your covers off and see the condition of the gaskets.

Well I'm just getting started on this.  I have a petcock rebuild kit.  I have fork seals and dust covers.

I have a set of brake pads, though I guess those will be around for a while.

I really don't know what else I should be stocking up on.   I want a luggage rack (mine has a crack in it) and I want hard bags, but those are available after market and kind of universal.

As soon as I'm out of financial crises I'd love to get a light bar like I had on my first valkyrie.  I assume that was aftermarket though and I guess those would  still be around.

The final drive, alternator, and radiator seem like great insurance, but those might be very low priority for me to acquire until I need one.  Those sound moderately pricey to just sit around in case of a problem, at least for someone on my type of budget!!  LOL

A while back, I got an extra rear fender (used). Specifically the rear half of the rear fender, $1K new.

Below, internet pic. The fender that I got is pristine when there were pristine fenders available.

I have around a dozen large tubs of new aftermarket chrome and other accessories I'll be selling off at some point. The two Valks I currently own are configured the way I want them and I have spare bodywork for each. Also duplicates or triplicates of a special NLA accessory, "just in case".

The OEM spares stash continues to grow. Seals, bearings, gaskets, O rings, carb parts, drive parts, parts to fix a hydrolock - anything considered "consumable" or that has been a known problem area has at least one spare in the stash. As I sell chrome parts I'll roll the money into more OEM service spares. I think I'm up to 4 tubs of consumables now plus final drive, swingarm, extra forks and wheels.

Last on my list is to get another 2003 Standard and build Blondie's old bike again - this time for me. I've a few things I want to do with the triple tree/light bar area so a Road King shield or compatible fairing can fit right on. Way back when, before I bought my first Valkyrie I was taken by the looks of a solo black Standard. This one will serve as a backup to the others or as a car-cruise ride for me and the Missus.

If you think you'll need it down the road, buy a couple of whatever extra part to make an order eligible for free shipping. Been doing this for 23 years now.

I concur.   Smiley

I also have spare parts for my spare parts on just about every wear system.

About the only parts I don't keep on hand and are internal engine parts.  Haven't really needed any except for a clutch rivet job over 15 years ago.

I have a back up alternator and some starter brushes.

No matter what you do, most likely you'll need something you don't have.  Roll Eyes

I wish I was handy enough to convert mine to a round headlight.

tubs of chrome, you say. You have any radiator parts you want to sell me? My bike is bone-stock in that department (no cover, stock cap, stock hoses) and could do with a little more shiny.

bruh just go really slow and apply logic. And remember the words of Optimus Prime: We can be heroes in our own lives, every one of us, if we only have the courage to try.

Rear brake reservoir cover is very affordable as mine wrinkled like the alternator cover did. I insulated the inside of both covers with firewall insulation as its been suggested the heat is the reason for this defect happening.

You beat me to it.

I definitely cannot take credit for the masterful work in building that fairing. That's the work of Bill Havins of Abilene. He did a series of excellent threads showing the procedure of fabricating that fairing.

Here's one of those threads on the build...http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,92859.0.html
