Still tinkering with his drains last week. One report said if he writes Dr. pepper on his meal selection they will actually bring him one! That seemed like a victory of sorts. The last drain procedure they did while Brian was awake, Living up to the tough Texan image!

Not completely out of the woods yet, but almost no output from the drains.  "They" think he might be nearing healed.  He's almost off the dilaudid.  He passed his second calorie & protein count with flying colors.

5 weeks, 3 days at this point.  At least it sounds like they are trying to prepare him for departure (i.e. no dilaudid, calorie count sufficient, etc.).  He will still have PICC line and IV antibiotics when they boot him out.

Hang in there Serk. We need a prayer covering for God to heal you up and get you out of there. I have had over 20 surgeries, but I can't even imagine being in the hospital for over 5 weeks. You are obviously one tough cookie. Stay strong.

Appreciate again all the thoughts prayers messages postings etc. etc. etc.!

Still here. 45 days in now. Almost getting used to living here, but soooooooo ready to get out too!

More drains in, some removed, reseated, resized etc. Wanting to drain a rather large abcess before sending me home, although I'll almost definitely be going home with my PICC line and an IV machine and at least one or two drains..

Other than these cursed bags hanging out of my side I feel pretty decent overall, so I've got that going for me.

Once I'm home and at a real computer I'll try to sit down and write out what exactly happened to me, why, etc. etc. etc...

Heh, once you figure out how to work their system, and things like Tarynn found the secret menu you can order from every day it's not that bad...

This was dinner tonight, with a Dr. Pepper:

I really really REALLY should NOT have looked that up. As of the time of this posting, I've been in the hospital for:

4,060,800 seconds
67,680 minutes
1128 hours
47 days
6 weeks and 5 days
12.88% of 2023

Oh well, for putting up with my whining here's a bonus pic. My hair had gotten matted into a single giant dishcloth like mat. Looked like I was going for dread locks but a single lock... Specialist Kali came up from her base and over two days detangled it, and put it in braids so it'll stay detangled. She's come up each weekend since to remove the braids, help me wash my hair (Best we can in a hospital bed, I can't shower, using some shower cap with shampoo in it thingy they have) and re-braiding it.

(There's a matching braid on the other side. I feel like Viking Pippi Longstocking)

GREAT seeing you posting Serk!  Long haul for sure, but at least you're in an exciting place!   ick  Feel for ya' I'm sure those seconds seem like hours sometimes.  Hang tough and this, too, shall pass.

I'm praying that the shamanistic poker/prodders can get ya home to your beautiful fam and adoring dogs (once they figure out who you are again) soon.  If they're letting you shovel junk food and caffeinated sugar water down your gullet, they either think you're on the home stretch or you're a lost cause.  I'm guessing it's the former.

Tell Kali the braid looks badass.  Reminiscent of the Vikings dude.  Maybe hold off on the skull tats for now.

My brother was in a burn unit for a very extended visit. When it was finally time to go, he had his wife bring his bicycle to ride home. He told everyone, do not look for me at home anytime soon.
Home or at least heading home is like coasting down hill.

From an update I posted on social media:

9/16 update: Might possibly if things go well think about letting me go outpatient from home in 8 to 14 days..... maybe.

---------------------   9/15 post continues below

Howdy! So I haven't given an update lately, mainly because, well, not much to update. Still in the hospital. Down to 3 drains now at least instead of 4. Still looking for Waldo but kinda given up on finding him and just working on supportive care so my body can heal itself.

There has been some talk of if the drains don't really start draining my grapefruit sized abscess in another week or so letting the surgeons do their surgery thing. Guess we'll see.....

I've been working on walking more, initially I could only walk a hundred feet or so, then two hundred etc... Today I walked clear across the Baylor campus to the little automated c-store, got some unhealthy chips that I've been craving, took a quick jaunt outside to experience the new and improved weather (And take the selfie on this post.)

So yeah. Not much to report. But wanted to let ya'll know I'm still here, still kicking, still getting a little better over time, but it's a lot of time... Think I just hit 48 days in the hospital... Fun times, fun times.

Thanks again for the support, prayers, thoughts, messages, visits, etc. etc. etc. Every single one of them means so much to me and to us... Tarynn has been a rock star going above and beyond, and in some cases out doctoring the doctors. I'm thankful to have her on my side! She also brings me and the nurses Scoobie Snacks!

Sounds like things are progressing but not at the rate you hope.  Life is like that sometimes.

You have wonderful support, both there and here.

Glad you are getting more mobile.

Got another batch of messages today! I think I'm the first person in many years to get messages this way, they seem baffled as to WHAT it is each time they bring me the papers... Heh...

Another update I made on social media relaying here:

Another non update update. On walkabout around campus now just to get outta my room.

I feel fine other than the 3 hoses sticking out of my side. Most of the time.

There's a meeting of the "complex cases" boffins tomorrow where they'll hash out the timing and details of my go home plan, will update once that's done and communicated to me.

Have been told I'll almost definitely go home with at least one drain and the PICC line and daily iv antibiotics that they'll teach me to administer.

They've started weaning me off the opoid pain killers which I'm mostly okay with, I don't want to like those things too much. Only needed to ask for them again a few times.

My blood sugar has been fine with no insulin the past week or so. In light of that I talked them into totally stopping the finger prick sugar tests 4 times a day. Finally the two fingers I could reliably get a blood drop from can get a break!

Oh wow! While sitting here writing this a lady walked by pushing a harp on a cart! Gave me Faire flashbacks except I don't have a stogie and a bee sting! Turns out there's a music therapy department, she gave me the info to give my nurse, just ask and can get a personal harp concert in my room!

Despite it all life is beautiful!

And that attitude will get you through this!  That and getting back home to your fam.  Even the little things will help, like wearing your favorite house robe instead of a starchy one with a picture window for your butt!

That is life.  One step forward at a time.   As long as the steps are forward, it just takes time to complete the journey.

I have not been where you are only had to stay in a hospital for three days to get my Afib electronically converted.  Back in the day they did not use drugs.  Today there are drugs.

I did check myself out to get lunch at Waffle House one day while I was there.  No one said a thing.

Looking forward to your complete recovery and long life ahead.

Thanks for the update Brian.

Yours seems quite the medical mystery.

When I was burned with FFFG gunpowder and hospitalized, they insisted on giving me a shot of Heparin (to prevent blood clots) right next to my belly button daily.  The needle was small and the dose low, but days of sticks in the same (now swollen) spot got exceedingly painful.  And complaining did no good.

Maybe it's just me, but I think playing harp music for hospitalized people seems a bit ominous (and funny).
