I was looking at the diagrams at Partzilla and noticed something I hadn't before. On the diagram showing the 'manifolds' (intake runners), there are three 'boost caps' for the vacuum ports, one on one side, two on the other. As I understand it, the PAIR system would normally connect to all six ports, so what are these caps for? And, since I only use them for sync, can I use them for if/when the capped tube that came with my sis-channel electronic sync gauge fail?

They are #6 on this page: https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/honda/motorcycle/1998/gl1500ct-a-valkyrie-tourer/cylinder-head

Except California Valkyrie.... As Honda built them, there are caps on the intake tube "nipples" at cylinders 1, 2 and 5.  The vacuum hoses for the PAIR system attach to the nipples at cylinders 3 and 4.  The vacuum hose going to the fuel valve goes to cylinder 6.

it is my understanding that the fittings on a California model all have a vacuum line attached.  The hose at #6 is still used for the fuel valve,

Guess you don't need them on your model bike. Perhaps think about desmogging since the tubes are over 20 years old.

That looks like the good Honda vacuum cap.

My experience with the run of the mill auto parts package of vacuum caps was that they self destructed (blew off or blew in two) in no time, and gave me loud backfires on decell.  Junk.

The cheap ones dry out and crack very easily. I’ve been using red eyes caps with no issues.

As with much of the service manual, those connections unclear. I can look back at it now, with more educated eyes. Mine came de-smogged, but with all the parts; I didn't count the hoses.

Thanks to all

If you unscrew the nipp;e and match it up with a short bolt, you can eliminate the self destructive nipple system. I kept them in a ziplock under the seat in case of a sync job.

That is an excellent idea.  cooldude

After your bike is all tuned, synched and dialed in, it's not like you need those ports for a long time.

I would spray the plastic bag that you store the nipples in with some kind of florescent paint because those are the kind of things that you forget where you put them. I never quite got around to replacing the the nipples yet.

A little history, earlier Goldwings used bollts (21, below).

Ron, are you saying those Gold Wing nuts (21's; screw pan 5 X 8) fit the Valk intake nipple holes?

I guess any 5mm screw the right length should fit. It's how they use to do it based on the fiche.
