Stebel ear cannon horn

Has anyone installed the 139 db Stebel Ear Cannon horn on their bike?  If so, where did you mount it.  This horn is considered the loudest you can put on a bike (except a train horn).  TKS...Tom

Just installed the Stebel Nautilus "compact motorcycle air horn" chrome version, if that's what you mean.  It's also rated at 139 dB.  It was very easy, I installed it just in front of the petcock valve.  I haven't taken pics but I can post some (or if other folks have pics they can post them as well)  I made a 4" long bracket out of 1" angled aluminum and bolted it in place, then ran the hot lead through a relay to the headlight enclosure to pick up the switched 12V.  I left the stock horn installed so if I just want a quick beep I can get that, but if I lean on that button... look out!

If you're going for the Nautilus compact, and you have in I/S, try putting it in a pod.  Fits great.  It leaves me wanting one for the other side, too, though.  (:

Here's my Compact Nautilus on a two-piece aluminum angle bracket mounted to the sidestand bracket.  It is LOUD (and fun)!

+1 ... not only is it loud enough to alert cars... it's also loud enough to scare the crap outta your passenger... sometimes resulting in a slap upside the head! i run 4, the previous owner did it, and I love it!

Thanks.  I was trying to figure out where I was going to mount mine and I didn't want to mount it up front.  Stebels are not the prettiest things and getting the chrome version makes it a little more attractive but not much.

No....and No!  The lights aren't Cobras(see picture), and the horn is the ugly black one. Figured since it was going to be hidden why pay the extra $$. When I first got the bike I was looking around and apalled at the prices they wanted for a light bar. So, I figured I was at least as smart as the commercial boys and made my own. Paid a couple bucks for a 1" dia. piece of aluminum bar stock, had a piece of 1/4" flat stock in my junk box, total cost (not counting the lights) was two six packs of Bud for the guy to weld the aluminum together, less than $50 to have it chromed. The kid that chromed it for me asked me to bring it over before lunch and pick up by 2:00pm same day. Seems his boss had a business meeting and he did for me while he was gone. The lights, both the turn/run ambers and the driving lights, I picked up for $40 a set. I saw the driving lights sitting on a friend's shelf all covered with dust, I knew they had been there at least five years so I cajoled him into selling them for $40 since "it's obvious you're never going to use them." Did the same thing on the Kury turn signals, got them from another guy I know....used the same tease and he just laughed and took the $40. You can't get either for that price new and these were still in their original wrappers....covered with dust. I converted the turns/run ambers to clear lens with amber LED's. The driving lights I changed to Adjure bulbs with HD trim rings so they match the appearance of the headlight. The driving lights are mounted on HD 1" risers turned upside down with a short piece of SS bolted to the riser and the light bolted to the other end. Works for me.

I mounted the Stebel Nautilus horn I bought inside my right Pod.  My cruise control servo is in the left Pod.  Kinda balances the bike.

So I get that 136db is incredibly loud (jet engines come in at 120db or so), and the Decibel scale is logarithmic, so 136db is about 8 times louder than standing behind a jet engine at takeoff! Wow!

Anyway.... My question is.... What does this horn sound like?
Is this a truck horn sound?
I'm looking for that 60's big American car sound, very clear, very big. Definitely not 'beep'.
(Ya gotta wonder about corporate process and marketing, was it  the engineers that made a big gorgeous bike and then said, yeah 'Beep' is good? I think not. )

I remember some really good looking horns on eBay once. There were two mounted behind a small frame and the unit was mounted below the triple tree and above the front fender. The small aluminum frame/cover had the Maiden head carved out of it.

In  any event, where does one purchase the Stebel Ear cannon?

Harbor Freight sells the Wolo Bad Boy chrome, which is effectively the same thing.  I've had one of those on my Valkyrie for 3 years or so.  Still loving it.

I was also trying to come up with a dual-level horn, so I could just blip the horn and not get a blast, but I could pound the button and get full volume.  It turns out the Wolo/Stebel can do that.  If you barely tap the button, real quick, it doesn't open the diaphragm all the way, and only gives you a little blip.  But, if you pound the button, which is natural in an emergency situation, it blasts you away.  Exactly what I wanted, and it came built in (by mistake, most likely, but it works.)

Went with the black, as I will likely hide under the bike or in the IS fairing.
The insides of my pods are  taken with Fog Lights and LEDs.

If it matters to anyone, the Stebel Nautilus is Italian made, the Wolo is from China. I have one of each but haven't used them long enough for a longevity comparison.

Did you have to make a special bracket for the ear cannon to mount in front of the petcock.  I have a chrome cover over the trans. so the horn is going to be tight.  I'd rather put it there than under the bike.  Did you connect it to the factory horn.  Any photos as you went along? TKS...Tom

If you look at my original photo, you can barely see the bracket.

I used a piece of steel bar stock, maybe 2" to 3" long, 1" wide, and
maybe 1/8" thick (these are approximate dimensions).  A hole drilled
in each end, painted black.

There was an existing hole in the frame where the horn is mounted,
that was drilled slightly larger and tapped.

The photo below is a little blurry due to being enlarged.

As for wiring, I removed the existing horn and rerouted the horn wires back to the battery box (I had to add extensions to each wire).  I used the existing horn wires to trigger the relay for the new horn.

I removed the stock horn and with a little mod, mounted the stebel right there; out front, loud and proud. I used the original, when they're ugly, why draw attention with more chrome? Ran the original wires up to a relay in the fairing and then right back down to the horn. I'll post a picture next week.

according to this website the jet engine is 140 db @ 100 ft.
i believe the horns are measured at 1 ft or 3ft something like that.
and, i believe the sound is 1/4 for each doubling of distance.
BUT, i could be wrong.
if thats the case the stebiel would be WAAAAY below the jet engine, at the same distance.

I tried mounting mine in the pods but it was to big. Mounted it at the hangers as others have shown. Not much room of a place to mount one. It is loud. Took the air horn rig off.

If you have the Stebel Nautilus, or an equivalent, it will fit in the pod.  Takes a little wiggling, and you have to be holding your tongue just right in order to fit it in, but it will fit.

I've never had the guts to mount anything in the pods after holding my hands over the outlets while going down the highway, there is a LOT of heat coming out of them. Not saying it doesn't work, as many people have done it, I just prefer not to block that airflow, (or to potentially melt anything installed).
