And just a little extra CYA: In Texas you can do this online, looks like in SC you have to fill out a dead tree copy and send it in, but there is a mechanism to tell the state "I sold it, ain't mine no more". Just because I wanted to know, I am have been doing some research into the 11.4" LCD Display thing on the new Subaru. There are lots of things that, well, make it really different than any other car I have ever owned. Has an engine shutdown feature (auto start/stop) if you are stopped for a long period of time. Has facial recognition so that seat and hvac settings are remembered for that face (drivers seat) And a bunch of other stuff More than I expected. I guess things they are achanging. Here is one of the videos I was watching. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTpmkNwgnCI&t=51s

my wifes newer 2018 tucson sport has so much 'stuff' on it as well do NOT like. I push the LOCK button as I normally do on the door panel getting out, but if my wife is still halfway getting out of the passenger seat with her set of key fob, the door automatically UNLOCKS since it recognized the key fob still in the car.
More on bad batteries on both our key fobs now 4 years old both died within weeks of each key fob. If the battery in key fob goes bad, you cannot push button start the car since NO key. DUMB.
I HATE the auto up/down feature (with push button) of the auto struts in back to open/close the rear hatch. So SLOW and if you go nearby the rear hatch walking by, the vehicle beeps at you and if not walk away quickly, the rear hatch automatically opens thinking you want to open the rear hatch. DUMB. How hard is it to manually open the rear hatch which takes 4 seconds less and you know you want to open it?
technology is not always great to own, lots of annoying features that make you dislike owning them.

I say had because I used a laptop, OBDII scanner, and a program called Forscan and waxed the feature entirely! Big Brother will not control my ride if I can avoid it! Some other "tweaks" can be done using Forscan. I have enabled a couple hidden drive modes, and plan to enable traffic sign recognition and lane keep warning. For the latter I will need to install a turn signal switch from a Ford Explorer, then program the feature in using Forscan. I'll probably disable the seatbelt nag and some other annoying pop-ups too. Very cool to have the ability to make these changes to make the trucklet my own.

Got the car today, some things I thought might be there weren't (like the two person front seat position reminder button) but I can live without them. Two things that I found a little irritating but were/are able to be turned off. One, the fuel economy thingy that turns off the engine when you stop behind another car (like a stop light). Suppose to "save fuel" but any starting and stopping of an engine is un-needed wear and tear on the mechanical systems (starter for one, engine for the other). Just for the record its s 2.5 liter "Boxer" engine (just like on my use to have BMW RT1100P (Picture to follow). The other thing is the lane avoidance thingy. It sees you getting close to the lane markers the steering tightens up. I can handle it but..... I will leave that engaged for the foreseeable future. Oh, a third thing you have to turn off since it comes "armed" is if you are driving down a road, no traffic, doing 60 MPH and you come upon a car that is in your lane going slower than you, your car will slow down as you approach the car and you will "tailgate" them (distance can be set close or far). If, after you have slowed and followed for some time you decide you want to go around you can manually accelerate and pass. And once around the cruise control will return to what it was before. But, in essence you can follow that other car for many, many miles at a predetermined distance. Just a few of the things I found today. My first "boxer" engine mode of transportation.

you see those GM commercials now with the vehicle driving themselves HANDS FREE no input needed to steer with your hands. NO THANKS, anytime you rely fully on electronics to drive entirely your vehicle, it will fail that is 100% true.
lane keep assists where the steering wheel moves for you to keep you in your lane better, ONLY if the sensors in front are able to pick up both side markers painted on road, are dumb. Anytime a steering wheel moves by computers is dumb. It does NOT work all the time on a lot of roads near me since rural roads or if snow on pavement will not work. I do not mind if put turn signal on the beep beep beep noise notifiying you another car in your turn lane and do not mind the beep beep beep putting car in reverse in parking lot when sensors see a vehicle behind you backing up.
adaptive cruise control my tundra has is nice to have ONLY on interstate or hwy. but that also fails on my tundra it will brake for you ONLY up to a point where you get too close to the vehicle when slowing down say 10 mph then will DISABLE adaptive cruise control ASAP and NOT brake anymore with the dash flashing RED to STOP/BRAKE and beeping at you violently. DUMB. Why it disables braking at slower speeds coming to a stop sign is DUMB when following another car NOT coming to a complete stop for you.
automatic high/low beams sensors is DUMB as well I disabled that on my tundra since does not work well in town where overhead street lamps are. sensors get confused and should have dims on and turns on brights in town at times.
engine stop start shut off is dumb as well but most newer vehicles are adding it thinking it saves fuel, but at the expense of starter/battery/engine. Gee, smart idea to save a few pennies on gas per day vs. having to replace the engine or its other components a few years earlier than normal????
Give me cruise control, power seat, power windows, AC, tilt wheel, and is nice at times backup camera (can live without) is all one really needs to drive an automatic transmission vehicle. and a radio. LOL

Jim, I think we have similar tastes. I came very close to buying a Beemer RTP before the Valks. I just couldn't find a good used one for sale within reasonable distance.

The BWM had some good points. Wife called it a "Gazelle". It was quick and maneuverable. The final drive failed at about 50,000 miles and I did not like that. Having said that, my 2015 Goldwing (new to me) had a similar issue at 65,000 miles. So..... It was a fun ride.

If you think a Subaru is as good as a Toyota don’t worry about the start stop engine feature. 9 year old Camry, 95,000 miles, lots of in town driving and never a moment’s trouble out of that system. The longer you sit in traffic the more gas your can save. Main feature I like about the wife’s Camry is that the air conditioning compressor and the steering are both electrical and continue to work, motor running or not. Don’t know about how the Subaru operates those systems.

Have not investigated that. I assumed it was belt driven but.... since it is a "flat four" that might rule out a lot of things that are easily belt feed on a V engine. Also, since so many things are "electric" they might well be motor drive. Parking brake is switch operated not a foot pedal or lever.

i think you will like the subaru. I prefer the looks of a crosstrek, but tad bit small, vs. the more squared off outback.
as far as your 1990's ford, am sure you can easily get well over the 1600 you were considering in today's market. 3-4K range seems reasonable off hand.
my kids 2004 pontiac vibe had 104K miles on it 7 years ago when bought for only 4K, now has 175K miles and I still think could get 2800 for it, for sure 2500.
Look at used car pricing the past 4 years and is CRAZY what they want for used vehicles. Went to carmax in 2019 looking for what they had a 2 year old subaru crosstrek, hot sellers back then, could buy new for 23.5K and carmax wanted a 2 year old one around 32K miles for 23K still. Carmax has NO haggle pricing the price is what you pay, so told them see yah, not paying 500 less than new for a 2 year crosstrek with 32k miles on it already.

Regarding used car prices, I had a similar experience at the Subaru dealership. Used 2022 with 23,000 miles about the same price as the 2024 with almost 3,000 miles on the odometer. Really strange. Will do some more research into use car prices for vehicles similar to my Explorer.

Well, I sold my 1996 Ford Explorer today, Cash in hand.
I think I was lucky in that the purchaser seemed to be an honest young man who was buying it for his father as a present.
He even reminded me of a couple of things I did not do.
I was a little concerned when he did not want to take it for a drive and simply offered me cash in hand.
But, I think it will be fine.
Thanks to Serk I got all the paper work filled out to tell the state I no longer own the car.
Anyway, thank you all for your advice and information. It did help me make the needed decisions since this is the first time I did this.
Also, a friend of mine, Henry rides a Harley, let me park it on his property which was on a nicely traveled road (goes to a State Park). Henry said he let several friends park their cars for sale on this hill were I parked the explorer and they were all sold within a week.
In my case it was less than 24 hours.
Henry and I and two others, have ridden all 48 states on two wheels between 2008 and 2012. He wants to get back on the road so I told him to just send me a text and we will go for a short ride. Henry is a Viet Nam vet and, when ever I think of that era he comes to mind.
Oh..... I digress. Thanks for all your help. I hope I got all the paper work right. Know I would not have without you all's help.
