we (wife and me) have been gone since 22 Jun  for a long overdue Vacation. By the 23rd of Jun, we were at the family reunion at Charter Hall , across from Perryville Md. Along the way, we saw 2 friends , and stayed overnight with Gwen's aunt and Uncle near Dayton OH.

Reunion was great, except for a notable lack of family who didn't make it.

On Friday Morning, we left and stopped at an old friend of ours and his new (to us) wife at Newport News VA. We avoided the worst of Baltimore and DC traffic. We stayed Friday amd Saturday nights at the Surfside Inn at Nags Head, and spent some time visiting old favortite places and just lazying around.Sunday afternoon, we head for Raleigh NC, where we met one friend for Starbucks, and had dinner with 2 other friends. Stayed Sunday night in Cary NC. Monday Morning, We had breakfast with another friend and his wife, then headed for Danville VA, where we stayed with a friend that we spent many holidays with while we still lived in NC.

Tuesday morning - after breakfast, we headed back to Dayton. This is where we found VA 8 - LOTS of curves and even banked ones.

Wednesday morning, we headed for home (took a new to us route I74 / I72 / I35 to kansas city.

Am I mistaken that VA 8 has not previously been discovered ? I can certainly add that it was real fun in our 2012 VW Jetta SW....

Don't know much about VA route 8 down south Scott, but you guys would have been welcome for a night at my house (and dinner).  I'm just 2 hours down the dreaded I-95 from your reunion spot in MD (15 miles south of DC). (avoiding bad traffic on that stinking road is a small miracle)

My surviving family would not need to rent a Hall, more like a phone booth.

My only niece is now driving my 94yo mom on their annual trip to the great western national parks (Montana and Wyoming.)

You took VA8 north to get on I-81?  What was the pavement like on the north end of it?

If you had turned south it becomes NC8 and goes through Winston-Salem and Lexington. That part of our state is famous for barbeque. VA8 and NC8 is long and we haven't been on all of it. In places it turns into city streets and Interstate highway.

Virginia and North Carolina have some "time machine" roads that give you a look into the past.  Glad you enjoyed it.

Most of the pavement was actually in pretty good shape. It was a blast to drive (to the limits of the vehicle - which is pretty good).

Echo the "time machine roads / towns" aspect. If we weren't is such a hurry, we would have stopped and done some exploration. Problem is the wife needs her wheelchair for long distance exploring (which we had with us - primary reason for the wagon). And we're well acquainted with NC BBQ (as well as KC).

VA SR 8 runs from the VA/NC line in Patrick County, VA to I-81 in Christiansburg, VA.

There are some good sections of the road, most of them in Floyd County.

The side trips off of Route 8 are even better than it is.

West on US 58 towards Meadows of Dan, VA is/was tons of fun.

They're in the process of turning part of it into a 4 lane highway, I'm not sure how much of the old road will be left.

SR 40 East to Rocky Mount, VA is a fun and twisty section of road, this section gets pretty technical and isn't a good choice for novice riders.
