This weekend, I helped a friend install a Hitch Doc on his I/S.  Everything went well except when it came time to re-install the bar that goes between the bag rails.  (and the saddlebag rails.)  What have you done to install these pieces?  (I worked out a solution for my friend...)

I had no problems with mine.  Did he order the hitch set that was made to work with the  bags and bag rails?

Yes...the paperwork states with hardbag/guard rails.  I couldn't find a part number on the hitch.

Did you have to push the bags in to get everything to go back together??

I had the same problem when I put my hitch on. SB supports didnt fit. I was gonna leave it out but figure I shouldn't, bags were flinsy. What I did was took 3/4" copper and added 2 90 deg elbows and about a 4" pc from the elbow. Soldered it all up. I drilled a hole throu the top where the saddle bag support clamp is and put in a screw to hold it from falling off. There is already a hole in the chrome support. I also painted it black. It has been there for 20,000 miles, 15 States, and a drop without a problem. You cannot see it with the hitch on. Its a bad pic but as you can tell you cannot see it. Maybe just a little near the outside of the hitch.

You shouldn't have to push alot. Less then a inch I would think. To much and the bags will tilt inward. I know.  Embarrassed

The spacers that we had made were 1 1/4".  We cut the offending rails at the middle and spliced in the new pieces (using set screws...it sure is nice knowing people who work with milling machines).

Joe: I have a Hitch Doc on a tourer. I never put the brace back in. It's been on since '03 and over 85K miles. Never had any problems. Been on 5 coast to coast trips like this.

It just seemed a little odd to us that Hitch Doc took care of the front mounts for the bag rails and guards but didn't address the back.

I don't understand what is being referred to re. the various fixes. I have one of those hitches but not mounted as yet, so maybe I need a bit more info before I venture into the installation. What exactly are you all talking about, is it the piece of the bag rail that goes from one side to the other kinda tucked under the lip of the rear fender? I'm kinda in the dark here so shed some light on it so I don't have to put it on Ebay. Wink

Hey John...sorry to confuse...

Saddlebag Fiche

Item 23 is the cross brace that goes under the fender and stiffens the saddlebags on the IS.  Because of the spacers that you have to put in between the rail and hitch and hitch and saddlebags supports, the brace will not fit without either pushing it together or making a splice.  If I didn't have a friend who works at a metal shop, I would have probably used copper pipe and spliced the brace in the middle.  (Easiest, cheapest, fastest.)

Does that help?

John, there is a piece of tubing that runs around the rear tire that connects both sides of the saddlebag mounts.

Had to go out and look at my Tourer and yes, I can see where that might cause a problem. Does it also have the same problem with the saddlebag guard rails? I guess I might also have to get creative if I have the same trouble. One thing I noticed on mine, I have Chet's (Rattlebars) quick drop kit installed which has some extra nuts in there as both spacers and lock nuts. I might have to do some experimenting with spacer width in this case. I don't plan on doing this much before summer travel so have plenty of time to "think" it out.

Thanks for the insight.

The bike I worked on had the round rails that go on the outside of the bags too.  We had to make adapters for both pieces.  Other than that...the install went VERY well.

P.S.  I will be installing a hitch on my bike soon.  I already have the adapter made to order.

I held that cross piece up under the back fender in the general area it "should" be when those boomerang shaped braces are mounted. It doesn't fit in between the guard rail braces where they're clamped to the bag mounts, and it's too narrow to go over the outside of them. I guess it's possible it might mount below the braces, but doesn't appear to be the case....at least not when looking at the first picture above.
